Standing with her family at Lady Danbury's ball Frannie was sipping lemonade and wondering who she would dance with next. The dancing was so much fun, the music was wonderful and lively. Lady Danbury had spared no expense as everyone noticed by the fine spread of food including the most delicious desserts. Frannie was sampling a few things when she noticed a man watching her and she had to ask. How dare you look down your nose at me like that!

Tag: @francescab never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade was an observer. It was after all what he so often did at these events. While he made the conscious choice to attend them, with clear motives in mind, he was not a typical nobleman, eager to engage in meaningless conversation. His physical limitation -- one that required the use of a cane -- exempted him from dancing. He supposed there was some relief to be found in that. He would of course, have to exchange some words with guests in attendance at these balls. But the less he spoke, the more he heard. The more he heard, the greater he learned. And when he was not talking nor listening, he was observing. Watching the crowd, taking in whatever information he could of the ton that could benefit him in the future.
β β β β β β β His eyes had come across one of the younger Bridgerton sisters. While he was not acquainted with her -- not having had any reason to be -- he did know of her. He made it a point to know of any notable family in Mayfair . . . and even the less, notable ones. She caught his gaze and accused him of looking down at her. While Slade was not technically doing so, he did not outright deny the accusation. Instead, he decided to learn more of her. "Do I have reason, to look down on you?" He questioned, perfectly calmly, composed, not returning the defensive tone in his words but rather . . . unaffected by her words. He did wonder, if her defensive tone was the result of some sort of insecurity that would prompt her to react so strongly.

Frannie was used to everyone knowing who she was as her family was well known by all. Being a Bridgerton was something she was very proud of as she loved her family more than anything else in the world and nothing would ever mean more. She didn't recognize him but that didn't matter she was still offended by the way he was looking at her. Was he judging her for eating sweets? Or maybe for for hiding in the corner with the pastries instead of being on the dance floor? Either way she just glared at him. I don't know if you have a reason to, but I don't even know you. Do you always look so harshly at strangers? She said with a pouty look on her face as she crossed her arms over her chest. Do I know you? As she spoke she realized how rude and childish she sounded. Taking a deep breath she uncrossed her arms then softened her voice. Forgive me, I didn't mean to be so rude. I'm Francesca Bridgerton.

Tag: @francescab never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade remained composed as the young woman questioned whether he always looked harshly at strangers. She was evidently upset. It made his curious as to whether this happened to her frequently. Whether she was triggered from a past experience. Or, perhaps because she was surrounded by so many others who smiled in her direction and exuded a friendly nature. But a smile was not an expression Rueben wore lightly or freely. A genuine smile, was to be earned and often received for very specific people and very specific circumstances.
β β β β β β β "You mistake harshness for indifference," he told her. He had no issue with her, hence, his indifference towards her. Perhaps she would quickly realize that it was merely the expression he wore. Far more honest than many of the men here who planted zealous smiles and falsities to gain favour from . . . well, probably women such as herself. With the support of his cane he took a couple of steps closer towards her so that they would not have to communicate at a far distance, while he still maintained suitable space between them.
β β β β β β β "I do not believe we have been formally introduced," he answered. But when she introduced herself, seeming to calm herself down and relax her body from it's defensive stance of her folded arms . . . he instantly recognized the name. He made it a point to know the families in the ton and while he had no close ties to the Bridgertons, they were indeed a notable family. "Rueben Slade," he introduced, not bothering with a bow or nod of acknowledgement.
β β β β β β β She seemed to be rectifying her earlier words with apology as well. "Is there a reason you are so, disturbed by my lack of -- as you may put it -- friendly expression? I assume you are quite accustomed to otherwise." Other than his straight forward expression, she -- as he previously thought -- was perhaps more used to smiles from afar, even from a stranger. His inquiry was calm, the question not meant to offend but to learn of what it was that caused her response. For every reaction, no matter how big or small, there was a deeper reason for.

Now that they were talking freely Frannie was feeling more relaxed and now she was curious about exactly who this gentleman is. Reuben it's a pleasure to meet you. I've never seen anyone like you here, most people are very friendly. Sometimes too friendly but you are the first indifferent one. She reached for a glass of lemonade then but kept her attention on him. I see you are here alone, or am I mistaken? Glancing around she didn't see any lady seeming to be looking for him. He was not one she'd heard of or seen before so it made her want to question him more. She forced herself not too, she knew her Mother would never approve of her doing so.

Tag: @francescab never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. A pleasure to meet him she said. Was that really true, considering their first interactions? Or was she merely another victim of societal expectations and the requirement to be polite. He did not question it though. Anyone polite enough to make that statement surely would not retract it. And yet, she could prove to be different considering the first thing she had bluntly stated to him. As if to further point this out, she spoke her mind saying that she did not see anyone like him here; that most were friendly.
β β β β β β β "Believe me when I say that such friendliness, is often merely a faΓ§ade." A mask to hide true intents and purposes. To conceal secrets and affairs that would not be received well. Something that those in this ton did fairly well. "With those things considered then," he began to say, as she told him that she had not seen him around here and that he was the first indifferent one.
β β β β β β β "Is it still truly a pleasure to make my acquaintance?" He asked with slightest bit of sarcasm in his voice, an opportunity for her to speak freely and not guard her words. Rueben supposed it would not make a significant difference. Perhaps it was just a way to test another's limits and bounds. When she asked if he was here or with someone . . . this was a question more easily answered. "You are not mistaken," he told her. "And where is your chaperone?" He questioned in return. A young woman at such an event unchaperoned . . . surely not.

This man was different than any other Frannie had met, even her brothers were different. Reuben Slade was not friendly in the least but he was polite in a rough way. It was interesting to her, he spoke his mind without a second thought. For some reason that was comforting to Frannie, she was used to be lied too, not a true lie but a polite lie that she always knew was not true. So when he asked if it was truly a pleasure to meet him she almost laughed. There was a tone to his voice that she knew he was teasing her, but teasing her as a friend? Or almost like a brother. You are a mystery, but I will answer your question truthfully. It is still a pleasure to have met you. She sipped the lemonade she had almost forgot she was holding. Then you are here to find a wife? Like most of the men here. She had to laugh again. Me? Without a chaperone? Please I am always surrounded by my family and my brothers are fiercely overprotective. In fact I think they will probably keep me from marrying right away as they do not seem to think that anyone is good enough for me. She sighed as she spoke then looked across the room. If you look around you will see many sets of eyes on us right now, my brothers are always lurking near by and so is my Mother.
