Reuben Slade was well known in the Ton but not for the best of reasons. Her step-mother hated that Marianne even talked to him and she was constantly trying to forbid her from seeing him. Today she had gotten out without an escort and she went to see her friend. His servants let her in and the first thing she did was ask about his wife, the servants looked confused so she didn't ask again but when Reuben came into the room she had to comment. What happened, I thought you were getting married? I knew you wouldn't be able to see it through.

Tag: @mariannetalbot what doesn't KILL ME BETTER RUN Slade had been in his study when he heard footsteps in the hall. He was not expecting any guests to come to his residence, having planned on using the time to catch up on matters of business. So when one of his staff entered his room to inform him, Slade had already risen to a stand, taking hold of his cane and making his way to the source of unexpected company. She was escorted to the drawing room and as soon as Slade entered, she spoke of how she thought he was getting married . . . further expressing her certainty that he would not be able to see it through. Slade gave a slight gesture with his head, subtly tilting it to the side to dismiss all but one servant from the room, though the remaining one stood by the door. Not to listen to necessarily but to be present.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Stepping a bit further into the room but not seating himself, he responded to Marianne Talbot. "And what concern is that of yours?" He questioned, his voice composed, unemotional to the accusation for, it held truth. His attempts to find a wife this season were, unsuccessful. Though no one -- apart from those among his trusted staff -- knew as to the true reasons of why he was looking: for the sake of his daughter. He had indeed been close to finding someone, yet he found himself falling rather uncertain. And even a semblance of uncertainty, was not something he would risk when finding the perfect mother for Evelina.

Marianne had just recently met William Slade and she was surprised to realize that Reuben was his brother. They were so different like day and night. She found herself in a room alone with Reuben so she decided to try to get to know him. Also she was dying to see what rumors about him were true. You don't have to be so rude, I was merely inquiring. A man like you needs to have a wife to help you relax I think. I could help you with that. She playfully smiled at him then stepped closer to him. You are a mystery to me, I heard you have a child but yet you have no wife. Do you want one? Maybe you are not looking in the right places. Yes she was to marry his brother but she could not resist trying to get his brother to open up to her. She realized that she was sounding flirty but it was too late to take it back now.

Tag: @mariannetalbot what doesn't KILL ME BETTER RUN Slade remained completely still as she shifted towards him, stating his needs in that a wife could help him relax. That she could help him with such a thing. He ever so slightly titled his chin up, his eyes not leaving her though . . . not out of interest in whatever she was offering. But rather, inquiry into why she was making such offers. "And you presume that you would provide me with aid?" He asked her, not completely rhetorically for the question called for some form of answer. She continued by saying that he was a mystery . . . and then commented on his daughter. Though he showed no outward reaction of it, inwardly he wondered who had told her of such a thing. Surely, not his brother. Perhaps one of his sisters.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Either way, Rueben was inwardly displeased by this and yet . . . knew that there always had been rumours of his daughter. He never confirmed nor denied them; he simply let them be. Slade was a man of not many words but in that time he did not speak, he observed. It had allowed him to build his ability -- deemed a skill -- to read people. And right now, while her tone was clear and the flirtatious implications behind them evident . . . what he did not know what was she was getting at. "What are you aiming to achieve here Miss Talbot?" He asked her, this time, his question held no room for remaining rhetorical. "You are to wed my brother, are you not." Unless something had drastically changed in the course of the past few days. So it brought him back to his previous question: what was she getting at here.

The more time she spent talking with Reuben, the more confused she was and now she got the distinct feeling that she had offended him. With a sigh she sat back in her seat and rubbed her hands together, a habit she did when she was nervous. I didn't mean to upset you, forgive me. Sometimes I forget myself, its my happy act because no man wants a woman who cannot hide her emotions. I am terrible at it and your brother....She turned away from him then not wanting to let him see the pain that question caused her. It took all she had not to let her voice falter. The arrangements seem to have fallen through. I have no doubt that if my mother finds another interested she will toss me to them instead. It only matters what title I have when I marry. Keeping her head turned she took in a few deep breaths and discreetly wiped her eyes before she turned her head back to him.
