Sisters Before Misters

Kate looked at the bill for the dress they had just received and felt her eyes widened. She did not say anything right now (for once) because she wanted Edwina to enjoy the season without fear of what it was costing. It was after all the event they had been saving for. Kate's first season had been put off until Edwina was old enough to have a season as well, as the family could not afford two seasons in London--and everyone knew that Edwina was going to be the one who find a husband before Kate.

Mostly thanks to Kate's wit.

Setting the bill to the side, she looked up at her sister, who was sorting the new gowns that just arrived. There was the white gown for being presented to the Queen, but the rest as some pastel colors that would look wonderful on her debutante sister. Pushing the money from her mind she smiled and walked over. "We might need two carriages. One for us, and a whole separate one for your gowns." Kate teased, joking with her sister as she inspected some of the dresses, and material.

Edwina had been overwhelmed when they were at the Modiste shop picking out the fabrics for her gowns for the season, she had looked at so many different fabrics and colors that she could not remember what she had selected.  She had been passing the time while they waited for her gowns to perfect some hairstyles.  When she was presented to the Queen she wanted to look perfect.  She had just one season to find a husband and she was afraid that she might not.  Or she might make a complete fool or herself and be scorned by the Ton.

Now finally the dresses arrived and she was thrilled looking at them.  Each one was prettiest than the last and she could not wait to start wearing them.  She heard her sister's comment and she gave her a blank look.  I won't be taking all the gowns out for a ride anytime soon.  Make fun all you want but in order to secure a marriage I need to make a good first impression.  I don't want to end up in that Whistledown lady's paper for looking a fright in public.  Have you not seen the comments she makes, she can be quite cruel for something as small as wearing a gown that the colors is not becoming.  She picked up the white gown then stepped in front of the mirror holding it up.  What do you think hair up or down with this one?

Seeing her sister's joy was worth whatever numbers were on that paper. It made Kate happy they had managed to afford this season while her sister was still able to enjoy it. Watching her sister hold up the white dress, made Kate wish she could have had a season before she'd become so jaded--though to be honest, she was also glad she had not. Kate had had to grow up very quickly, and she had worked hard to made sure Edwina had not had too.

"You wish to wear your hair down? Now that would cause a scandal!" While in recent times, ladies had begun letting bits of their hair down in public, wearing it loose and down around her shoulders at Edwina's age would cause a bit of an up roar. "Come now, wear it up, with one of those rediculas feathers, and you will look like a dove!"

For all the hunters to set their sights on. This something Kate was keeping an eye on, and what better way to decide on if a man was worthy of her sister or not than to keep Whistledown's gossip in mind.

Edwina was in love with this white gown, every detail of it was so beautiful and she felt blessed to have such a wardrobe suddenly.  She knew that it had to be counting them so much but neither Kate or Mother would ever tell her how much.  They wanted to protect her from everything no matter what she said.  Instead of fighting them she decided to embrace it and enjoy her debut.  

Looking at herself in the mirror she laughed at Kate's comment, But my hair down looks lovely, but you are right it must be up and that would be the perfect touch to add feathers.  I just don't want Whistledown to be comparing me to an ugly swan.  She makes such cruel comments.  Edwina looked over at her sister with a smile.  I think this season is going to be wonderful for both of us!
