Anthony could not believe it. One moment, he was alone with the singer, a silent understanding that this would be the only time they could be together . . . and the next, he saw Kate Sharma hiding behind his desk. A turn of events he had not been expecting although, he was rather relieved that he was not merely imagining her scent. That it was real; that she was real. He was unsure what would have been worse though at this point. For he'd been forced to dismiss the other lady however, saying he suddenly remembered that he had some work he needed to complete. Oh the loss of what could have been, even just for tonight.

So he already felt the annoyance within him, Kate's presence being even more apparent as they had a nonverbal battle of actions between him standing by the desk and her making it clear that she was there. As if their locked eyes for that briefest of moments had not been enough. When he walked the singer to the door, he closed it behind him, turning towards the desk without crossing the room to go back to it. Instead, he spoke from where he stood. "Were you really spying on me?" A demand in his voice. Had she really come in here all sneakily, expecting to spy on him? Anthony supposed it was fortunate that he had known she was there otherwise she would have been present for when he and the singer . . . or, would it have been better that he not known, if only to teach Katherine Sharma a lesson.

Kate had wanted to avoid Bridgerton and Bridgertons but as she could not, avoiding the ONE Bridgerton would be enough! She tried to go to the hall--but he walked out into the hall. So she did what any sane person would do, and walked into the nearest door! Which was smart for less then a minute when HE FOLLOWED HER in to the room. Or well, not followed her, but entered in it too!

Not wanting to explain herself, she had ducked under the desk. Hiding there she had nearly panicked until he saw her--then she felt actual panic! Anthony thankfully did NOT give her away and instead sent the singer away without so much as a kiss. (Smug thought!)

Then she heard his voice! OH! The arrogance! Of course he would think this was about him! It wasn't! It was about avoiding him! That was really very different! Crawling out from under the desk, she popped her head up over it, while standing on her knees. "I was not!" She insisted! Pushing up to a stand, she kept the desk between them. "It was an accident!"

Anthony watched as she crawled out from under the desk, as she explained that it was an accident. His expression held his disbelief in her statement, having every intention of tormenting her for it. For this. "An accident," he repeated, mockery in his tone. "So, you accidentally sneaked into my study and then accidentally crawled under my desk to accidentally hide from me." And the woman I brought in was the unspoken addition to that statement.

His tone purposely made the entire thing sound so ridiculously far from an accident. "I fail to see how any of what you did was accidental. So perhaps I should rephrase my question." Oh yes. He had the upper-hand here and he was thoroughly planning on using it. "What are you doing in here?" In his study, as he had made it abundantly clear in his earlier statement.

Well when he said it like THAT no, it did not seem like an accident. "I was avoiding you!" She corrected. "I went into the hall to avoid you, and then you walked into the hall! So I slipped into the first door I could to avoid you, and you came in here! I had thought to avoid awkwardness by hiding, and instead of getting a drink and going to join your family I find you here making plans with a opera singer!"

"For AFTER you are married!" Kate pointed out, knowing that was what they should be focused on! "In a proper English home!" Did that happen a lot? Did men seek out women in their mother's home?

Kate put her hands on her hips. "You would end up breaking Edwina's heart! Marrying her and keeping mistresses on the side!" The more she focused on that part the angrier she got. Why was he fussing at her?! HE was the one being naughty!!

Anthony believed her. But admitting that was not nearly as fun as teasing her in this situation, feeling as if he had the upperhand. "Well, it does make perfect sense that the place to go when avoiding me, is my study." His tone was filled with sarcasm. Because while he did believe her . . . the entire situation was rather, ironic. "Last I checked Miss Sharma, I currently remain unencumbered by marriage." Despite the plans she heard, he was not yet engaged nor wed. And yet, there was this unsettling feeling within him upon knowing that she had heard him with another woman. He was unsure why. He just knew that it did not sit well with them.

"And it hardly seems appropriate that a woman be spying on my conversations with another. Particularly ones not meant for another's ears." Rather, intimate words . . . and actions. Though it was fortunate that Anthony saw a glimpse of Kate when he did. "Though it does make me wonder, just how long did you intend to remain there?" Had he not seen her. He could not help but make the suggestion, if only to see her reaction. "When I do marry your sister, am I to expect that you will constantly be spying on me then as well?" Words slightly sarcastic but just as she was focusing on his actions, he too was deflecting and focusing on hers.

"One could only wonder why," she muttered with as much if not more scarasim then he had. "Though it does make me wonder, just how long did you intend to remain there?" "I had thought for only a moment to avoid you, how was I know you planned to be a rake." "When I do marry your sister, am I to expect that you will constantly be spying on me then as well?" "You need not worry about such," she said sweetly, before returning to the normal tone in which she always spoke to him, "because you are not marrying my sister!"

Kate knew that on paper he might have been the best catch for Edwina--rich, titled, handsome, large family--but she was not going to let her sister marry a Rake! Aside of the fact that he would break her heart . . . .aside from that fact . . .

Kate could not--would not--explain the feeling that she had. The need to at all cost prevent this. The need to make this union not happen. It was beyond the need to keep her sister safe. It went beyond the need to help her family. There was something more there. Something more that she had to stop. "And had you not seen me? Would you have . . . done whatever it is Rakes do here with your mother's guest right out side the door?"
