Tag: @misspenf never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. This entire situation had become bloody complicated and Slade was rather displeased by it. One of his rivals seized an opportunity to not only give a strong sign to Lord Featherington of what could happen if he did not pay his debt . . . but also, to frame Rueben for the plot they were intending on carrying out. It was fortunate that Slade received word of this evil ploy against him from one of his informants, before too much had been set into motion.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ But apparently, there was a letter implicating Slade and linking him to what they intended to do. And that was, to kill Archibald's youngest daughter, Penelope Featherington. Now, it was not compassion nor honor that caused Slade to become involved in this. It was the risk being far greater if he was not. He may have already been named as the conspirator and so there was a great deal of damage control that needed to be done. It was why he had sent a couple of men to apprehend her and bring her in to safety.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ She was after all, far safer with him than out there. Why Penelope Featherington was out and about at this late hour, Slade had no idea. Nor did it matter. He needed her alive and long enough to figure out exactly what evidence the others had tried to implicate him with. If the Bow Street Runners got a hold of it, it would cause further complications in Slade's empire. So now, he had to directly speak with Penelope to make it appear as if he was doing this to help her.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ The ton did not know of his more . . . shady or criminal dealings and he would much rather keep it that way. They knew he was a businessman, for he had built his empire, Accumulating all this wealth without his family's aid. And this business focus, is what he would stick to. To show that he was not the enemy here. Bloody complicated indeed. And he was certainly going to make Archibald pay for all this. The Baron owed him.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Walking into the room where she was being kept, Rueben removed his hat though kept his gloves on as he leaned onto his cane and took some steps forward, towards her. She was awake. The sooner he explained things, the better. "It would appear that your father has become involved in some rather unscrupulous dealings," he began to say. "And as a result, you have been targeted by those he has displeased." Keeping hold of his cane with one hand, he crouched down in front of her so that they were at the same eye level.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "I have no business with them," he clarified so that she knew that it was not his men nor him that Archibald had displeased to this level. "But my business involves keeping you safe from their nefarious intentions." None of it was technically a lie. Slade delivered the words with the same stoic nature he always displayed, and prepared for whatever reaction she may expose upon these learnings.

Tag: @francescab never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade was an observer. It was after all what he so often did at these events. While he made the conscious choice to attend them, with clear motives in mind, he was not a typical nobleman, eager to engage in meaningless conversation. His physical limitation -- one that required the use of a cane -- exempted him from dancing. He supposed there was some relief to be found in that. He would of course, have to exchange some words with guests in attendance at these balls. But the less he spoke, the more he heard. The more he heard, the greater he learned. And when he was not talking nor listening, he was observing. Watching the crowd, taking in whatever information he could of the ton that could benefit him in the future.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ His eyes had come across one of the younger Bridgerton sisters. While he was not acquainted with her -- not having had any reason to be -- he did know of her. He made it a point to know of any notable family in Mayfair . . . and even the less, notable ones. She caught his gaze and accused him of looking down at her. While Slade was not technically doing so, he did not outright deny the accusation. Instead, he decided to learn more of her. "Do I have reason, to look down on you?" He questioned, perfectly calmly, composed, not returning the defensive tone in his words but rather . . . unaffected by her words. He did wonder, if her defensive tone was the result of some sort of insecurity that would prompt her to react so strongly.

Tag: @misspenf never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade was at the Featherington residence for he had business to attend to with Lord Featherington. He supposed this was one of the advantages of the social season. It allowed Rueben easy access to those with whom he'd otherwise would have had to send his people after. And no one at this time would be suspicious of two gentlemen visiting one another. The social pretense. But what Slade did not like, was that Featherington was making him wait.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ It left Rueben standing in the hallway, concealing any indication of displeasure, guarding his features and getting the feeling that Archibald was doing this intentionally. A subtle power play that Slade was now in his home. And while Slade seldom left without his bodyguards and closest friends at his side, an afternoon visit would not warrant it. As these thoughts went through Slade's mind, the sound of something -- or someone -- distracted him as he turned his head to see a woman tumble down the stairs. Slade watched as she stopped and then . . . came the expected and normal reaction of a woman who had just taken quite a fall. Tears.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Slade did not need to look around to know that there was not anywhere else near to aid her. And, social etiquette that he do so. It was more the expectation than anything else that prompted him to make his way over to her, using his cane for support, until he was towering above her. Slade did not like physical contact, which was also why he had not abandoned his gloves as he did his hat upon entry of the estate. Looking down at her, watching her for but a moment, he extended his gloved hand to her so that he could aid her in standing. If of course, the fall had not caused injury to her foot or leg. "Can you stand?" He asked, his voice as composed as his expression and demenour was stoic.

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. The woman's reaction was rather, unexpected. It would not be outrageous for her to feel some remorse for her ruined gown, particularly in a public area. Appearance was everything after all. And yet, she seemed to be paying more attention to Gilly than the state of her dress, assuring him that it was no trouble and that she hoped he was not in trouble. Leave it to Gilberto to win the hearts of women already. But even Slade knew that he had to remain in her good graces.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ If any report was to be made about a destructive creature terrorizing the people of the ton, Gilly may be taken away and . . . Slade would not do that to Evelina. "Any form of effective punishment would require confinement," be began to say. "And that would undoubtedly result in far greater punishment for me, than for him." Because Gilly would become restless and potentially destroy the house. Despite the spacious area, he needed fresh air. He was too accustomed to the country and now coming here, he clearly did not know how to behave accordingly. Excitable and enthusiastic whenever he went out.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Slade kept his expression stoic, his words continuing to be evenly spoken. Despite the possible underlying humor in them, he delivered them dryly. Leaning on his cane he continued to eye Gilbert, slightly shaking his head at the menace and how pleased he was to be getting her attention. Gilly titled his head up, so that his nose and mouth was against the woman's palm as he ran his tongue over her hand. Slade withheld an annoyed expression. Perhaps if the lady did not mind a ruined dress, she would not mind a wet hand. "Should you continue to do that, he will not leave you alone," he told her . . . not kidding about how affectionate Gilbert was. Clearly.
