what doesn't KILL ME BETTER RUN Rueben had not witnessed what started the altercation, but he had seen majority of it. And did not intervene. Instead, he allowed the events to unfold, despite the two guards at his side who could have easily warned off the assailants. But this was not Rueben's business, nor would he frivolously involve himself in affairs that had nothing to do with him. And more importantly . . . there was something about the man.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He had indeed, put up quite a fight. He had strength, there was no doubt about that . . . but he also had heart. Determination. And both, were natural qualities that Rueben valued in an individual to enlist them among his group. He did not actively seek them out, but when they crossed paths . . . Rueben would not forgo the opportunity. Giving a nod to his guards to secure the area, Rueben leaned on his cane to make his way towards the man who had fallen back to the ground. The gang leader stopped his movements when he was standing next to the laying man, towering over him as he showed clear signs of the fight. Rueben moved his cane, placing the bottom of it on the man's chin, and tilting his head to the side as if Slade was assessing the severity of his injuries.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "It appears you will live," he told him. Though he already knew that, it was his way of encouraging the man to stand up. Setting the bottom of his cane back at his side, he naturally leaned on it. Not being one to engage in physical contact -- even though Slade's hands were seldom unclad of gloves, this being no exception . . . he reached into his pocket to extend to the man a handkerchief instead, before taking a small step back to give the man room to get up as well.

what doesn't KILL ME BETTER RUN One would think that being in the public eye, a room full of fellow citizens of nobility with household staff of the estate hosts . . . would be a safe environment. But for Rueben Slade, it was sometimes the opposite. He felt he was more of a target at these places, especially for those who knew his guards and protectors would not be permitted within the hall of the event. Slade loathed to admit vulnerability, but he knew that if his rivals had any sense . . . they would pick such a time to make their move. As limited as that sense may be, considering the repercussions that would follow. His eyes had already caught sight of someone in the room, a Baron. And one that owed Slade a great deal of money. It was not difficult to see that he was displeased by it. His pride getting in the way of fulfilling his debt. But the way he had been casually glancing at Slade throughout the evening, alerted the gang leader that something was afoot.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Deciding to exit the event early, he was soon proven correct. The moment he stepped out, he was immediately grabbed and dragged to a darkened alleyway. The rest . . . would be known through physical evidence. Slade was certain he got at least two men in the knee caps but physical combat was not one of Rueben's strong suits. It was why he had men with him to protect him. Men who had been dismissed for the night. He felt himself on the ground, kick after kick, punch after punch. Slade refused to make any sound, refused to give them any satisfaction. They were most certainly going to beat him to death. Had the sound an approaching carriage not startled them, perhaps they would have been victorious. But as soon as there was the risk of a witness, the men fled, and fled quickly, kicking Slade's cane out of reach. Shame. He would have liked to get at least one more whack in.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ The man lay there for a moment, steadying his breathing as he attempted to muster the energy to get up. The throbbing of his entire body was starting to kick in and he could taste blood in his mouth, his vision a bit hazy. Deeply inhaling he crawled over to his cane, using it to hoist him up to his feet. Staggering a bit to the side from the pain, he managed to regain balance . . . focusing on one foot in front of the other as he leaned on his cane for support, until he reached his carriage where his entrusted driver was waiting. The man took a look at Rueben, eyes wide with shock as he was about to jump off the driver's position . . . but Rueben immediately held up his gloved hand to stop him. "Just drive," he instructed bluntly, leaving no room for debate. He stepped inside, seething from the assault that took place tonight.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Once he reached home, he said nothing to anyone, immediately walking straight into the house. The stairs seemed too difficult to manage at the moment, so he opted for going straight to his study, until he had the strength to make it to his bedroom. Pushing the door open with his cane, he used the same method to close it and make his way towards one of the chairs, and sat down in it, letting his body relax from the strain of movement after the attack. He did not know what he looked like at the moment, but could imagine. Glancing down, he saw his shirt was torn, he was fairly certain that his face was marred indicative of his assailants efforts, along with his chest. Yet at the moment, Rueben could not be bothered to move to clean himself off. If there was one thing they did wrong however for their own sakes it was that. . . they should have killed him.

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Evelina did as expected, practically throwing herself into Elizabeth's embrace, wrapping her tiny arms around her. "Thank you for coming Miss Lizzie! I missed you!" It had only been a few days but Evelina had wanted to spend more time with the woman. When she asked about her friend, Evelina brightly smiled and enthusiastically nodded. "This is Gilberto!" She announced proudly. "But you can called him Sir Gilly! That's what our friends and family called him!" Though it was mostly only those that they were close to; her aunties and uncle did not seem . . . receptive to the name.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "We haded him for a loooonnng time! You can pet him! He doesn't bite! He gives the best kisses!" Gilly clearly wanting to get in on the excitement, started nudging his head against Dawn's dress, emitting another bleat while leaving his tongue hanging out. Despite his silence, Rueben watched everything very carefully. He watched Elizabeth's reaction upon seeing Evelina, the way she naturally smiled at the sight. He watched her instinctive position of lowering herself to welcome Evelina into her arms, rather than keeping to any formality.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He watched the way her smile remained when seeing Gilberto, asking about him rather than repulsed by him, or fearing that he would cause unrest or any dishevelment. Yes. Rueben was indeed taking in every sight, protective over his daughter and watching to see how they acted around her because . . . after all, he did need a mother for Evelina. "PAPA!" Her voice causing him to turn his head to look at the pair. "Sir Gilly likes Miss Dawn and Miss Lizzie!" Slade gave a small smile at his daughter's words, watching the goat work to get the same affection.

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade took in the reply, Elizabeth saying she had no issue but that Dawn did. For dogs. Despite what others said, Slade would not compare a goat to a dog so therefore, there would be no significant issue. Of course, if these two women's reactions were anything like his sisters . . . then it would pose as a problem indeed. When Elizabeth asked if he had a pet, Slade responded with a simple "No." Aware of the potential confusion this could cause, he continued.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "We have a four legged member of the family." For Sir Gilly was far more, significant than just a pet. Slade then turned and when his back was facing the two women, could not help the small smirk that played on his features. He turned his head to the side, to offer further reassurance. "It it no dog," he revealed, leaving it at that for in a matter of moments, they would discover it for themselves.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Follow me." With that, he moved the distance to the garden, the doors opened to reveal an elegantly crafted table with chairs, a table on the side containing snacks, tea, and of course upon Evelina's vehement request: chocolate cake. "Miss Lizzie! Miss Dawn!" Evelina cried with excitement as she ran over to them with her arms out . . . and sure enough, there was Sir Gilly running after her, bleating with excitement at Evelina's excitement.
