Tag: @edwinasharma1 never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. She revealed that her father was gone and that that he mother would be displeased if she were to find her here. It made sense. After all, this was not a suitable place for an unchaperoned woman. But Slade said nothing of the sort. Instead, he gave a slight nod when asked confirmed that she would require a ride. He then gave a small motion to one of his guards who understood, and returned in mere moments with a cape. Slade reached for it and then held it out for the woman to take. Being any sort of hero was not exactly something Rueben strived for. He was not exactly some knight in shining armour wishing to save the lady and gain any credit in the process. He this more out of obligation and to ensure no path of blame could lead back to him.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ But . . . she was crying. And he could offer no, physical comfort. Other than the cape. "I will accompany you." It was the most he could offer. No embrace of comfort, no soft words of reassurance in telling her that it would be alright, that she was safe now. Offered only was a cloak, a carriage and his company. He gave a short nod to his guard to ready their ride knowing he would have to provide her with further reassurance . . . otherwise this entire thing would be for nothing. "I am Rueben Slade," he introduced, assuming knowing he was of nobility and his name would provide some comfort that he would not do anything untoward. Withholding any questions until she was more calm, he watched his driver prepare the carriage which took only but a few moments, before motioning for her to go on inside.

DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Rueben leaned back in his chair, the threat leaving him unafraid and serving as a reminder as to why he did not frequently see his family. If it were not for Evelina, Slade doubted he would have seen his family at all from the day he left. But for the sake of her, he did. And he would have to continue to. But the threats made by his brother would not be forgotten nor would Slade be afraid of them. William was correct in her misunderstanding of what the expression meant and such was evidenced by the way curiosity flooded her features as she titled her head to the side. She was about to ask but William moved the conversation along, asking his sisters as to whether they received any callers. Slade could not think of a topic that interested him any less than hearing of suitors for his sisters.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ However, it must have been fate for suddenly, there was a thud at the door. Muffled voices and chaos could be heard on the other end. And then, there was another pounding sound. Slade could not help but smile, the side of his mouth curving upward in a half smile while Evelina's face lit up excitedly. For they both knew what was happening. They both knew what was coming. It was a matter of mere seconds before a creature raised on his hind legs, pushed open the doors with his front hooves and came bounding in the room with the same energy that Evelina had.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "SIR GILLY!" Evelina squealed with pure excitement. And his sisters, screamed for an entirely different reason as Gilberto trotted towards them, under the table and around it, weaving his way through excitedly as he bleated to express it. He reached the end of the table, which just so happened to be where William sat and without hesitation, leapt onto the Duke's lap; the entirely scene unfolding in a matter of mere seconds. This, was indeed perfect timing to introduce his family to Sir Gilberto The Goato.

Slade will be attending the week long event! However, due to his physical limitations, will not be able to partake in some of the events (fencing tournament, dancing, etc). He will still attend, spectate, converse, observe, and engage with others -- in his oh so typical way. He will be bringing a handful of his close friends/bodyguards, considered to be part of his household staff. There is also a possibility that he will be bringing a certain four legged friend . . .

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade listened as she spoke of her cook, about to offer to bring her here though Juliet explained her retirement and that she held an agreement with her father. "If there is issue in upholding it, I will speak to him." And ensure that it was honored. Rueben was not one to make such offers or grant favours but with Juliet, it was different. Juliet was now his wife and Evelina was already attached to her. Juliet's happiness and contentment in this life, was of the utmost importance. And if her father interfered with that in anyway, Slade would undoubtedly deal with it. For she was a part of his family now and he would not allow anyone to endanger a member of it. Nor emotionally compromise them.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Her next question was an incredibly valid one, and the fact that she asked it, just continued to prove that she was right for this role. For she considered such things, when another may not. "She knows her mother's name." What she looked liked as evidenced by the portraits of her in their home estate. "She knows of her interests, her preferences, her dislikes." Slade tried to tell her what he could but at the same time, Evelina enjoyed creating stories about her. "All you need do is ask her, and you will find no detail is spared." Evelina loved talking about her mother and Slade would not discourage her from doing so. Despite love not being what bound him and his late wife to marriage . . . they shared a love for their daughter.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Her next question however caused him to pause. He dropped his gaze to his plate, a casual gesture but purposefully as he thought over her question. And what it meant. Physical intimacy was clearly not a part of their marriage and yet . . . it was not an unreasonable question to ask. Which was why Slade need answer it appropriately. He raised his gaze once more to meet hers as he spoke. "Is that something which you desire?" Children. Did she desire children of her own? It was the expectation of women to bare children but . . . was Juliet among the ones who wished for it, or among those who did not.

DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Rueben felt Evelina's body become less tense as her shoulders relaxed, once William's tone calmed a bit more and assured her that he would see it later tonight. A smile returned to her lips, knowing that she would be able to make her uncle smile a little later. But, somehow she knew not to say anything, the tension filling the room as Rueben watched his brother. His observant ways noticing how tightly William gripped the neck of the bottle, his words not yelled but strong in authority. This demand, was precisely why Rueben had left his family and saw to his own business and acquirement of wealth. Why he had chosen his own path. Because he was not one to submit. And that stubbornness, was what made him so bold -- perhaps foolishly so -- in the words he stated next.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Then you will have it in her absence," he told him bluntly. He could demand all the respect he desired, but Rueben would not compromise his daughter for it. Though perhaps now, things had become more about the brothers rather than just about Evelina. For he knew how he was outranked; he knew he could not say such words to any other duke. But here, he was William and Rueben was disallowing rank to effect what he said or how he acted. Yes; foolish indeed. "For my status as her father, far outranks yours where she is concerned." His voice strong, as Rueben leaned forward a little bit, his expression more stern rather than indifferent.

DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. When the door opened and two women stepped in to join them, Evelina brightly smiled about to hop off her papa's lap to greet them. But Rueben knew what was coming. He knew William well enough and from his first words, it was clear that he was angry. So Slade prompted Evelina to remain where she was, casually moving his arm around her waist. He would not get involved in the affairs of the Slade household. He had his own to deal with. So he just watched with indifference. When William banged on the table, Evelina jumped a little, not accustomed to such loud sounds as a result of anger. His sisters, fell silent before profusely apologizing for their tardiness, before looking to Rueben in greeting.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ To which, Slade just gave them the slightest of nods. One of them explained a wardrobe issue and that it took extra time to ready themselves while the other simply remained silent, sheepishly making her way to an empty chair. "U-uncle," Evelina began to say, having recovered from the loud sound but not yet moving her position. "Maybe you don't need to wait until tonight. Maybe you can looked at it now so that you can smile." Because even Evelina could tell he looked mad and she did not like to see people upset. While Rueben remained composed, he did interject in a moment of silence. He started with his sisters, looking at them, his voice calm and demeanor stoic . . . yet his words and the meaning behind them strong. "Should you continue in your provocation towards him--" Referring to William, for surely they knew that being tardy and not sending word as to why would anger him. He then looked at William.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "And should you continue to react with such enraged hostility--" Referring to of course banging on the table. Looking between the three of them he continued. "Then I assure you that this is the last time you will see Evelina for the duration of the season." It was indeed a threat, and one that could potentially make his brother's anger stronger, and his sister's mood also shift . . . but Slade was not about to leave his daughter in such an environment. Despite how much she wished to spend time with them.

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. She spoke of having heard robbers in the area of the ton and that it was not safe . . . and that was precisely what he was relying on to further add conviction to his story. Should anyone ask, he could easily lay blame to robbers. And no one would question it. So long as there were no, further complications or anyone who could attest differently. "It is not," he agreed. "Least of all for a woman with only her maid as an escort," he pointed out. Referring to when she joined the scene without adequate protection. It was fortunate that the assailants -- most of them were dead. Otherwise, she could have been caught in the middle of the attack. And Rueben would much rather avoid having that blood on his hands. Or rather, be blamed for it. When she apologized, Slade casually looked to the side, not bothering to correct her assumption. It was better for her to believe that he was in pain, then have to explain his aversion and challenges with physical contact.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He gave a short nod of gratitude when he accepted the items from her, setting the clothes to the them to the side before looking to the bowl of water and the cloth. "That should be all," he said to her. "There will be no need to call for a physician," he added, knowing it would be the presumed protocol. But he would much rather avoid it when his injury was not that severe. It would already take him some time to change and clean himself, especially with tea coming. He looked at her, noticing their closeness. "Thank you," he said in a level voice but it was not lacking in sincerity. With their close proximity and his . . . inability to close any distance, he abruptly rose to his feet, leaning on his cane for support.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He needed to place distance between them before . . . anything progressed which would inevitably force him to be more, obvious in his struggles with skin to skin touch. He knew that any man would find her beautiful, desirable . . . but Slade had long learned to suppress these urges due to circumstances and traumas that made satisfying them, difficult. "You have been most hospitable," he told her in further gratitude. "Did this, ruckus waken your father?" He asked, as he made his way over to where the bowl was set. Looking down at his covered hands, he knew he would have to take his gloves off . . . otherwise he would further stain the cloth and dirty the water with blood. Slightly annoyed by the fact, he began to slightly pull at each glove finger, until it was able to slip off with ease. Awaiting answer to his question, for he sincerely hoped he did not have to deal with her father this night.

Tag: @francescab never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. A pleasure to meet him she said. Was that really true, considering their first interactions? Or was she merely another victim of societal expectations and the requirement to be polite. He did not question it though. Anyone polite enough to make that statement surely would not retract it. And yet, she could prove to be different considering the first thing she had bluntly stated to him. As if to further point this out, she spoke her mind saying that she did not see anyone like him here; that most were friendly.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Believe me when I say that such friendliness, is often merely a façade." A mask to hide true intents and purposes. To conceal secrets and affairs that would not be received well. Something that those in this ton did fairly well. "With those things considered then," he began to say, as she told him that she had not seen him around here and that he was the first indifferent one.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Is it still truly a pleasure to make my acquaintance?" He asked with slightest bit of sarcasm in his voice, an opportunity for her to speak freely and not guard her words. Rueben supposed it would not make a significant difference. Perhaps it was just a way to test another's limits and bounds. When she asked if he was here or with someone . . . this was a question more easily answered. "You are not mistaken," he told her. "And where is your chaperone?" He questioned in return. A young woman at such an event unchaperoned . . . surely not.

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade listened as she explained that the only servant was her cook, and that staff retention was difficult in her home due to her father's temper. Causing her to being used to doing things on her own. He knew that now would be a good time as any to explain the household staff dynamics, to bring her further comfort to the estate that they would reside at. "Such will not be the case any longer," he told her, especially now that she was out of her father's home. "The household staff are incredibly loyal," he continued to say. He had hand picked each and every one to make sure of it. And while there were not an over necessary number of them like in other households of such wealth, Slade focused more on their trustworthiness, and their strong capabilities.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "And they will see to your needs and to assist you with what you require." Pausing for a moment he looked at her. "Is there anyone you wish to hire or bring from your previous residence?" He would of course have to look into them, but he knew that some ladies brought their own maids -- as his first wife had -- so was inquiring as to whether Juliet had any staff that may have been formerly fired that she wished to reassign. Or anyone from her father's home that she wanted to bring into her new one. He gave a small smile at the compliment towards his daughter, the topic of Evelina always one that warmed his heart. "She will enjoy that a great deal," he assured her. Evelina loved creating things and being able to cook with her newly appointed mother, would indeed bring her joy. Hearing her laugh caused Rueben's slight smile to remain, though it faded upon hearing her next question. It was . . . not an unreasonable one to ask.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Had anyone else other than the woman he married made such an inquiry . . . he would not have answered it. In fact, he would have cast a look to never ask such a question again. But in this case, he merely dropped his gaze for a moment before looking back at her with the same stoic composure. "No," he answered, aware that there was a great deal to that word but foremost, it was honesty. He had no emotional ties to her when he had married her. It had simply been an arrangement of convenience. He then looked down at his plate to take another bite of his dinner, swallowing before continuing. "Evelina will talk often of her," he informed Juliet. "She was very young when her mother passed away. Something it would appear the two of you have in common." And Evelina liked to imagine her as the epitome of perfection. Slade would do nothing to dissuade or discourage these notions and 'memories' she held of her mother . . . true or false.

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. It was her smile, that brought reassurance to Rueben's mind. He had been watching her reaction very carefully upon revelation. There was initial shock, which was entirely understandable and expected. But then, the way she smiled and seemed to light up with excitement . . . brought his mind to ease. That her gaining a daughter, was not a complication for her. In fact, the questions that came after indicated that she was embracing the very idea of it. Speaking about his daughter was not a common occurrence -- with the exception of those he was close to. But certainly not with a woman he had met with the intent to marry. So hearing her ask all these questions . . . did not agitate him as one may expect. Instead, his lips curved upward, offering a half smile to Juliet. A sincere one.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Evelina," he first answered, revealing his daughter's name to her. Where he felt that he could. Had she reacted . . . unfavorably, Rueben would have instantly ended the conversation and engagement. But instead, the conversation was open to talking about his daughter. "She is four and a half year," he further explained, knowing that Juliet deserved to know of her age now that she knew of her existence. And seemed rather willing to become a mother to her.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Slade knew that the real test would be in how she was with Evelina but Rueben tended to trust his judgement and thus far . . . it had been sound in this area. And to further reinforce these thoughts, she spoke of understanding why he had kept it quiet, rather than being resentful or bitter at this secret kept. She spoke of . . .how Evelina was lucky to have him as a father and this was fairly uncommon for Rueben to hear.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Truth be told, he did not even know how to react to such, complimenting words. Keeping his emotions guarded, allowing a smile was indeed progress in his emotional expression . . . and progress when it came to his comfort around Juliet. "I share this sentiment," he started with, in agreement to children being treasured and loved. "I wished to protect her from gossips in the ton." Which was not a complete lie; he also wished to protect her from his enemies or those who would use her against him. "It is assuring that you understand my motivations for not telling you this sooner. And that you seem to, embrace the idea of being a mother." Because being a mother to Evelina was more important than being a wife to him.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "These questions you have of her preferences, I shall leave you to ask her. When you meet her." Not if . . . but when. "Which will be soon," he added on. He knew that if Juliet asked Evelina questions about what she liked or any of her preferences, that it would bring his daughter great excitement. And allow them to further bond. "Then it is settled, that you . . . accept this arrangement?" Because consent, was extremely important and having her explicitly agree, would take out any ambiguity that he was forcing her into this, for down the road . . . it would only cause Evelina harm.
