Being called upon by Martin Wellington was one of the worst things that Elizabeth could have to endure. He was unlikeable, boring but also arrogant. He would not stop talking about all of his accomplishments and how wonderful he was. Elizabeth was quite certain she would have fallen asleep if he weren't so loud with his boasting. She thought she had made it quite clear at the last ball that she was not interested in him or having him pursue her. He must have thought she was not serious, as he could not understand how someone could not be interested in him. There was no doubt in her mind that he was after her because of her father's title and money, as most men were during the season, but he was probably one of the worst suitors she'd come across in her two seasons.
Elizabeth glanced off to the side to see if anyone would save her from this. Their chaperone stood off to the side in the room, one of the maids so Elizabeth had no hope of bringing her into the conversation to save her. But then she thought she spotted someone walking by the drawing room. Had that been Anthony Bridgerton? It was not out of the ordinary for any of the Bridgerton family members to appear at the Davenport Estate without plan to do so, just as the Davenport family often appeared at the Bridgerton house. Elizabeth was the one that probably spent the most time at the Bridgerton house but that did not matter. The two families were incredibly close and it was because of that, that Elizabeth was struck with an idea. "Excuse me," she said quickly, getting up from her seat rather quickly and rushing towards the open door to the drawing room.
"Anthony!" She called out. Elizabeth shot him a look that told him that she required his attention now, no matter the reason for his visit to their house. "Help me," she said with her voice low so that Martin might not hear in the other room. "Please," she felt like she would beg if he so desired. If Elizabeth knew less than wonderful things about Martin then she was certain that Anthony might know even worse things. Elizabeth had to hope that he would enjoy the idea of scaring off a suitor, whether or not it was for his sister.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony had quick business at the Davenport estate with Charles; a task that he hoped would be an in and out as he did not intend to take up much of the marquess's time. In fact, he had been walking through the hall already on his way out when he heard his name. Immediately stopped he turned to see Elizabeth who was standing at the threshold of the door. He made his way closer to her as it seemed she was unable to fully exit the room. He assumed that she was going to ask about the whereabouts of his sisters or brother, so was prepared to answer as they did not accompany him . . . but instead, she asked for help.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He just looked at her, as she added a plea that seemed a bit . . . desperate. Well, surely she must have been if she was asking him for help. The fact that he had sisters made him rather . . . familiar with this tone. This expression. For all he needed to do was glance past Elizabeth to see none other than Martin Egerton sitting comfortably. Ah, yes. Now it all made sense. Anthony looked back at her, seeing that expression on her face and . . . he need not ask anything more nor did she need say anything more. He was once accused by Daphne about scaring away suitors but it would seem in this instance, his ability to do so was at the request of another. Ironic how that happened. He gave Elizabeth the slightest of smiles in understanding, before taking action.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Martin Egerton," Anthony nonchalantly greeted as he a walked past Elizabeth, casually standing a seat across from where Martin was. He would wait for Elizabeth to rejoin them, and take her seat before he did the same. "It is rather good to see you, as we missed you at the club the other night." He could see Martin stiffen and Anthony paid no attention, casually leaning back in his chair. The man before him was a boastful one so Anthony knew just what to say to effectively run him off. "My sincere condolences, Egerton. I can not imagine suffering such a loss at the tables." Gambling. Anthony made it a business to know about the men in the ton should their gaze ever rest on one of his sisters. Egerton would not have been permitted to set one foot in his house.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "I do hope you were able to settle your debt." For a man with as much pride as Martin, this would indeed embarrass him as Anthony revealed such with a level tone, a very . . . matter of fact tone as he allowed his intimidation to full Miss Davenport's request. "But of course you were," he added on. "For a gentleman of honor would not court a proper lady, such as as Miss Davenport without ensuring his debts were fully paid." And the Viscount knew for a fact, that they were not paid, the seriousness of the implications of his words known from the way he looked at the man and the tone of his words.

There was a chance that Anthony would not give in to her plea, instead deciding that his business elsewhere was far more important than saving Elizabeth from an unwanted suitor. The two of them were not particularly close but Elizabeth knew deep down that should she ever truly need him, Anthony would be there for her. It might have been because of the loyalty to the Davenport family instead of Elizabeth specifically, but she would take either one. Elizabeth watched as he glanced over her shoulder to see who she needed help from and there seemed to be a decision made then and there.
Relief washed over her as she followed Anthony back into the drawing room. She knew he could scare off Martin better than anyone and if he could not, then she would have to find another plan. Elizabeth did not see what all the fuss had been about when Anthony had scared off suitors for Daphne but she recognized the fact that Daphne had been looking for a suitor and Elizabeth was not entirely interested at the moment. The look on Martin's face was less than pleased and Elizabeth put a polite smile on her face, though she was holding back a large grin. Taking a seat in the chair that stood between the chair Martin sat in and the one Anthony would likely take, Elizabeth felt like she was about to watch a rousing game of tennis.
It seemed Anthony could do all the work on his own and did not need any assistance from Elizabeth. She made a show of raising her eyebrows in surprise when Anthony mentioned the club, even though she had known he would likely make comments about any issues that Martin might have. "Awful luck?" Elizabeth asked, putting on a sad face and looking at Martin in an attempt to offer empathy. Then Anthony made a comment about settling his debt and Elizabeth had to purse her lips to keep from laughing at the unfortunate death glare Martin was sending Anthony. Oh, it was quite delightful indeed.
"Now I do believe this is not appropriate talk in front of a lady," Martin tried to sway Anthony into stop his revelations. "My goodness, is all of this true?" Elizabeth asked, placing a hand over her heart. "Lord Egerton, I dare say this information has given me quite a lot to consider and perhaps it would be best for you to leave at this time," Elizabeth said. "My Lady, I assure you these things are not true," Martin said, trying to recover. Elizabeth raised her eyebrows. "Are you calling Lord Bridgerton a liar? For I have known him my entire life and know him to be an honest man." She challenged him for a moment. "And one without a gambling problem." Elizabeth had been unable to stop herself from adding the last bit, however rude it might have been. The smallest of smirks appeared on her features before she was able to put it to rest.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony knew that Elizabeth was playing along with this and call it fortunate or misfortunate that it just so happened that the man she was trying to escape, was one who had issue with gambling and debt. Though, had he not, Anthony surely would have found another way to scare off the man. It was one of the indisputable skills -- or abilities -- that he had. He also did not like being called a liar, though made no indication of his displeasure at the remark. He looked at Elizabeth as she retorted to Martin's remarks, dismissing him and yet the man still denied the truth. And still refused to leave. It would seem the nobleman required more of a verbal push from the Viscount.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "You are fortunate Egerton, that all it currently remains is talk between the three of us." Anthony was of course referring to Martin's attempt to make this about what was appropriate or not. "For say it was written in a place that many had ease of access to. Then this simple talk, would indeed extend throughout the entire ton." Anthony was referring to Whistledown, or any gossip columnist but as the former was the most popular this season . . . others were always at risk of being exposed by her hand.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Strongly consider this advice I freely offer to you," Anthony continued. "Clear your debts as any man of honor would do, and find a woman to court who has no previous knowledge of your outward deception and misleading remarks." A way to deter him from returning to Emily, as that was the goal after all. "If you do so in haste, then such topic of conversation can lay to rest right here." For Anthony would not bring it up again, and the real underlying meaning being that he would not risk being exposed by another -- such as Whistledown -- on a much grander scale. His words held a natural authority to them, meant to intimidate and warn, without making any outward threat to the man.

Martin was wholly unimpressed by Elizabeth's comment, finding it offensive that she should openly speak to his gambling problem. She supposed he should have been far more focused on the fact that he was not welcome there but he did not seem to get the picture. Anthony continued to berate the man and Elizabeth sat and watched. Surprise washed over Elizabeth as Anthony made a comment, inferring that things should prove to be quite dire if this information were to become known to Lady Whistledown. She certainly tried her best to stay away from the rumors and gossip of the ton, often deciding not to participate or trade secrets. But this was one instance where Elizabeth had no problem making sure this information got around so that Lady Whistledown might write about it in her paper. Her eyes watched as Martin seemed to pale at this threat from Anthony, knowing that even if he insisted they were not true that it would ruin his reputation. "You would not dare, Bridgerton," Martin tried, but even Elizabeth did not believe his threat. She did, however, believe that Anthony would follow through with what he promised.
Elizabeth continued to be enthralled with the authority in Anthony's voice and yet he did not raise it once. It was mildly attractive but Elizabeth dismissed those thoughts from her mind. It was neither the time nor the place. Seeing that there was nothing he could do, Martin grumbled something before grabbing his hat and disappearing from the room. Elizabeth stood from her seat and rushed over to the doors of the drawing room, poking her head out to see that he did indeed leave the home. With the front door closed behind him, Elizabeth turned to Anthony with a sigh of relief. "Well I must say, I am rather disappointed. I thought he'd put up a bigger fight." But in the end, she was just thrilled to be rid of him. "You are my new favorite Bridgerton," Elizabeth said, wagging a finger at Anthony and grinning. "I do not understand what all the fuss was about from your sister. I think you are wonderful to have around with other suitors," she teased slightly. Elizabeth walked further into the room and offered Anthony a genuine smile. "Thank you, again."

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony continued to look at the other male, as he told him that would not dare do such a thing. "Perhaps I would not," he stated. "But others may not be as kind as I when discovering such . . . gossip worthy information." Truth be told, Anthony was not one to engage tremendously in gossip, however . . . it was to be taken seriously. Words had the power to destroy reputations and whenever it involved his family, or anyone his family was close to, he would do all he could to prevent it, or restore it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ In this case however, the threat was made towards a man who was imposing his company on a woman who was not wanting of it and that was enough for the Viscount to intervene. "Good day," he stated in farewell as the man rushed out, Anthony's words almost mocking him as he disappeared from the room, prompting the eldest Bridgerton to lean back in his seat a little, a smile forming upon his lips. The expression matched with Elizabeth as she stepped further into the room, saying that he was now her favourite Bridgerton and that she did not know what the fuss was from his sisters.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Please do convey that to them," he encouraged, only half kidding. "It would certainly make my job a great deal easier." While he had learned from the Nigel scandal . . . it did not leave Anthony any less protective of his sisters, nor in belief that anyone was truly good enough for them. Smiling back at her, he gave a nod of acknowledgement in her words of gratitude.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "You are quite welcome. Should you find yourself in a similar situation, which I certainly hope you do not, do not refrain from enlisting my assistance," he offered. While there was a lightness to his words, he did indeed mean them. The thought of a man forcing his company on a woman was . . . unsettling, to say the least. And knowing how important the Davenports were to the Bridgertons, made Anthony more set on doing what he could to help. "Are you expecting company from any more questionable gentlemen?" He asked; his way of checking to see if she wished for him to remain longer or if it was preferred for him to make his leave.

Elizabeth grinned, thinking about the reaction of his sisters if she were truly to tell them that Anthony's assistance with suitors. "I will be sure to let them know," Elizabeth replied. Then Anthony spoke, offering his assistance should she require it in the future. It was a lovely gesture and Elizabeth found herself unable to remove the grateful smile from her features. While something like this would usually fall on her own brothers, they were not like Anthony. Her eldest brother did not live at home and was far too busy to assist her with her season, and she did not trust Noah to hold her best interest at heart. "That is incredibly kind of you," Elizabeth said. "And I shall take you up on that offer I am sure. You might be sorry you said such a thing," she half-teased.
She scoffed and shook her head. "I should hope not," she answered. Gentleman callers only excited her step-mother these days. But even so, it was nearing the end of the time frame where it was acceptable for callers to appear, which Elizabeth was thankful for. "I hope I have not delayed you from any important business," she said, walking with him from the drawing room and towards the front door. "Perhaps I shall see you at the Merchant Ball tomorrow evening?" Elizabeth was certain the Bridgerton family would be there, but could never be sure if Anthony would make an appearance.
***
The evening of the Merchant Ball, Elizabeth found herself moving between sticking to her sister's side and looking for Benedict to save her from having to dance. It was not a particularly exciting evening, though she could hear Helen prattling on about all of the wonderful suitors that were available. Elizabeth dismissed herself to get a glass of lemonade, any reprieve from the sound of Helen's voice.
Someone spoke from behind her and Elizabeth felt her skin crawl. Turning to look at Martin Egerton, Elizabeth put on a fake smile. "Lord Egerton," she greeted, dipping into a short curtsy out of politeness. "I do believe I made it quite clear that was not a good match between us." Elizabeth would have used other words but she could never be certain when someone else might be listening. "Oh, Lady Elizabeth, please do not think those things were true. I believe we would be a wonderful match and I would love the honor of taking your next dance," he said with a smile on his face. He was relentless and Elizabeth despised it. "I am sorry but my next several dances are spoken for," she lied. Elizabeth tried looking over his shoulder to spot Benedict, to flash him a look that she'd given him time and time again at these events, but was unable to locate him. "Please excuse me," she said politely, moving to go around him but he reached out and lightly grabbed ahold of her wrist. Elizabeth would not falter and would not be bullied by this man. "Elizabeth, do not walk away from me," he said, his voice low. She pulled her arm from him, glancing around as she knew there were people likely watching. "As I said, Lord Egerton, I am afraid my next few dances are already taken."

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU After Elizabeth confirmed that there weren't any more suitors at this present time that he need make himself ready for -- or assist her with -- he took that as cue to leave. Moving towards the door and speaking to her along the way, confirming her question regarding the ball tonight. He was so accustomed to looking after his sisters, what was one more when a woman's comfort was at stake. He of course faulted her brothers for not keeping a watchful eye on her or rather any men that may be keeping a watchful eye on her . . . but then, Anthony knew that he was known in the ton for being the overprotective Viscount. It was not easy to get on his good side where his family was concerned. Bidding adieu to Elizabeth, Anthony tended to the rest of his business before preparing for the ball.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ As usual when entering the room bursting with guests, his eyes scanned the crowd, taking in the sights of familiar faces -- weary on the not to familiar ones. And during this surveying, he noticed Elizabeth with the same insistent man. And, Anthony was not the only one. A few other eyes were upon them, and once again, he decided to correct the man. Entering the scene, he managed to catch on the last few words spoken and directly responded to them. "By me," he answered with a polite smile. Though, there was more behind the expression and his words. A warning to Lord Egerton to not press his luck as he attempted to do so earlier.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ With his hands clasped behind his back, Anthony moved closer to the nobleman, dropping his voice rather low, more evident warning in his tone. "You would be so wise as to never lay your hand on Miss Davenport again. Lest I remove it for you next time." Clear threat in his words. There were not a great deal of things that caused Anthony to become emotional or irrational . . . but poor treatment of a woman, was certainly one of those things that made his blood boil.
