49. Our muses in a carriage accident.IT WAS APPALLING -- the way that Portia treated Marina Thompson. Henry had stood there uncomfortably at the Duke of Hasting's country estate as he watched the Featherington berate the girl. The Duke and Duchess decided to hold their first ball in the countryside instead of at the Ton as a symbol of their marriage, which lead Henry here. Lucy had mentioned that she wanted to ride home with some friends, which left the painter to take his carriage alone. . . until he encountered Portia yelling at the girl. "I see your carriage is a bit cramped, Lady Featherington," he interjected politely, "why not allow Miss Thompson to ride in mine?"
Porta stuttered, but ultimately allowed it. . . which found them here now, awkwardly staring at each other. Henry tried to make conversation a few times, but he knew he was at least twenty years older than the girl; he must seem ancient to her. Still, he was glad that he could offer her some peace at quiet.
That is, until he hears the loud neighing of one of the horses. Suddenly, the carriage launched into a quick pace, only to have the driver shouting -- the carriage was swerving off the road --
Henry doesn't remember the crash, but his head is aching when he wakes. He rubs at his head and feels stickiness. He grimaces. Blood. Despite the ringing in his ears and throbbing headache, he seems to be all right. His carriage driver is worse for wear a few kilometers before him. Poor man. And then it dawns on him that there is one other unaccounted for. Henry hurries to his feet, only stumbling from the dizziness that overcomes him. Oh, that made him nauseous. He puts his handkerchief to his lips, just in case he gags, but he manages to right himself. After a breath, he calls out: "Miss Thompson! Miss Thompson, are you hurt?"

Marina had grown accustomed to listening to Lady Featherington berate her several times a day for anything she did wrong and even sometimes just for nothing more but to hear her own voice booming through the household. Portia Featherington had never wanted her here Marina knew that, it was not made a secret. The lady had made no effort to welcome her here. Marina knew that her presence here was not welcome, the only one who truly seemed to welcome her had been Penelope but until this day Lady Featherington had only berated her at their home never in public. Marina felt sick to her stomach as Lady Featherington started her ranting in front of the entire Ton at the Hastings ball. She knew that her cheeks had to be a burning red and she fought the urge to yell back at her because she had learned that the less said the sooner the Lady would stop. In the beginning she had tried to reason with her but she gave up fairly quickly. Tonight she cast her eyes down not wanting to see who was here to see her wretched situation. When the Lord Granville offered her a ride Marina nearly ran to his carriage. Sitting in his carriage she relished the peace and quiet at once. She also had room to move, the Featherington carriage was far too crowded for any kind of comfort. Marina looked shyly at her savior. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness tonight Lord Granville. She smiled at him and relaxed. She had been planning to speak again when the carriage suddenly lunged forward at a frightening speed, she tried to keep herself on the seat but the carriage was moving far too fast. Then it started to roll sideways. A scream came from her lips and then everything went black. Her head hurt so bad but Marina could not remember why or where she was. She blinked a few times trying to place where she was. There was a carriage to her left that spurred her memory. She had been in the carriage with Lord Granville, how she ended up lying here she could not remember. Her head seemed wet but when she reached up with one hand she screamed seeing it had blood on it when she brought it back down. The pain was horrible and then she heard a voice. I am here Lord Granville . My head is bleeding, I cannot see how badly. What happened?
