never make
DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR.
ONLY OUT OF SPITE.
ONLY OUT OF SPITE.
Slade was in the city conducting business. While venturing from his country estate was not often done with reluctance or need for haste, this time was different. For this time . . . he was a father. The birth of his daughter had opened up a part of him, a part of his heart that he did not know he was capable of feeling. Emotions he did not know he was capable of experiencing. While he was not an outwardly emotional individual, his daughter so naturally drew it out of him. Holding her, caressing her cheek, letting her tiny finger curl around his hand . . . none of these things triggered his aversion to skin to skin contact and he was relieved for it. It was one of the few things he could not control so to not have to cope with the absence of touching his daughter, was indeed a relief.
While his business affairs were mostly complete, he decided to pay visit to someone whom he often saw whenever time allowed them. Whenever distance was not a hindrance. She had become someone he felt he could trust, the years they knew each other having caused them to shape and grow into what they now shared. A respect, an understanding . . . a loyalty. He also wished to check in on her to ensure that all was well, and that no one caused her trouble or harm. With his empire having grown so significantly -- especially since their first meeting -- he could now offer her more than just the promise of not telling her madam that she did not perform adequately. After all, she had given him respect and discretion in return. So he felt, obligated to protect her. Their previous encounters had been comfortable and engaged in with ease. He expected no differently from this only, but holding only the thought of whether such ease would allow him to reveal the birth of his daughter.
Making his way inside the establishment, he paid the Madam, requesting the same person he always did as she escorted him to a room where Isabel would be joining him. Rueben entered, the door left open as he awaited deep into the room, practically standing in the corner until the door was pushed open and she entered, A slight smile touched his lips as he watched her, giving her a small nod of greeting. "Miss Mayfield." He was well aware that other men used vulgar tongues when referring to women in her line of work . . . but for Rueben, she had most certainly earned his respect -- which was not easy to do.
