.:Name:. Eloise Bridgerton. .:Nick Name:. El. .:Rank:. Nobility. .:Age:. Eighteen (born in 1796).
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Much like most of the other Bridgertons, Eloise's hair is chestnut brown, and she much prefers to wear it down, where possible — the painfully tight up-dos and feathers in her hair are very much her mother's doing, and something she'd prefer to avoid where possible. The same can generally be said for her dresses; though she's often found in frills, and no longer permitted to wear dresses that show any portion of her ankles, she loathes how uncomfortable the majority are. The usual blues she can be found in are about the only part she doesn't mind. Her eyes, like her light father before her, are blue, verging on grey in certain lights, while her complextion in contrast, is pale. .:Height:. 5'6. .:Portrayed by:. Claudia Jessie.

.:Personality:. While Eloise could be considered a pessimist, with regards to the views the rest of the ton holds, she simply views herself as a person seeking equality, and somewhat afraid of all that is expected of her. She can be radical in her beliefs, foolish with them at times (did she know that she likely shouldn't go across town unaccompanied and unchaperoned? Yes. Did she regret it? Well...partially), but she's headstrong, stubborn and will stick to her guns, even when it becomes abundantly clear that she shouldn't. She can be loud and wilfully opinionated, not afraid to stand up for herself and others, not afraid to argue her point, even when it feels like a losing battle.
At her core, El is full of a lot of doubts and insecurities, most caused by the loss of her father and the subsequent horrors that occurred the night her youngest sister was born. While she was only seven when Edmund passed, and Violet had a horrific labour, she does still remember it, still have nightmares about it. While her rebellion is not solely caused by this fear, a lot of her rejection of settling down is. Does she wish for the opportunity to attend university and travel? Yes. Does she also fear losing love, and the notion of childbirth? Absolutely. Much of that fear, and her lack of understanding of what life outside of upper class London is really like, manifests in her being hard-headed, quick to roll her eyes at the other debutantes, and short-fused.
.:Skills:. Writing, reading, sass, pall mall, stubbornness, investigating anything that actually interests her (i.e Whistledown's identity). .:Weaknesses:. Fiercely headstrong and independent (which is definitely not always a good thing in the Ton), dancing, just about anything expected of a young lady in her position (Playing the piano? No. Crocheting? Absolutely not. Pleasant conversation with suitors? Not for her.), naïve (while she knows herself to be intelligent, there is a lot Eloise doesn't understand about the real world. She isn't entirely aware of her own privilege, she isn't experienced, and she's far more naïve than she'd ever admit to herself or others).

.:Occupation:. Debutante. .:History:. Spring, 1796, and the fifth bridgerton child — though only the second daughter — came into the world as loud and bold as she was destined to be throughout her life. With three older brothers and an older sister, she was destined for a childhood full of boisterous activity, laughter, and love, especially with a younger sister coming along exactly a year after her birth. Childhood seemed normal for a child born to a viscount and viscountess in Mayfair, London: trips to their country estate in the summer, running, and swimming, and feeling on top of the world; lessons with a governess who tried her best to handle the rambunctious rabble of Bridgerton children; pin money pooled together with her younger sister in an attempt to bribe a bold maid into telling them the truth of how a lady came to be with child (though that one didn't actually work).
First came Gregory, and then, when it seemed like the Bridgerton clan must surely be complete, her mama and papa announced the final child would be arriving in a few short months. Seven at the time, and with very little interest in babies, she'd shrugged and gone back to playing with Frannie. It hardly seemed like ground breaking news anymore.
Mere months later, and everything changed.
The day started out as any other, with the entire family gathering together for breakfast. While many families within the ton likely didn't eat together, she'd realised rather early on that her parents were not like all of the others. While many mothers and fathers had almost nothing to do with their children, nor with each other, her parents were a true love match; Edmund and Violet were truly in love, and genuinely liked to spend time with all of their children — and independent as Eloise was, even as a child, she could never deny that she liked to spend time with her family, too.
Breakfast came and went, morning bled into afternoon, and it soon became apparent something was amiss. There was nothing particularly peculiar about their papa heading off to spend time with one of the children, especially Anthony. As the eldest, and almost a man himself, it certainly made sense that they'd go off together. What did not make sense, however, was the scene that unfolded before them all: their father dropping to the floor, before going entirely still. They were ushered inside quickly, but nothing was ever quite the same after that. A single bee sting, and life would never be the same again.
Family affairs were more subdued for a time. Her papa was gone, her mama was in mourning, and even at seven, she noticed the shift. The house that was once so full of life and noise seemed so much quieter — until a few months later, when the halls that used to echo with children's laughter were instead full of screams.
The night hyacinth was born was the scariest of Eloise's life. while her elder sister sang softly to her, attempted to drown out the sound of their mama's screams, nothing could really block out the terror she felt. In the weeks between Edmund's death and that dreadful night, Eloise had been so terrified of losing her mother too; she'd stuck by her side, held her hand as tightly as she could, and it seemed then that her greatest fear was coming true.
Dawn broke, and the youngest Bridgerton entered the world, much to the joy of the entire family, though for the fifth Bridgerton, it would continue to remain a night synonymous with fear, those screams haunting her nightmares for many, many years to come. The nightmares faded somewhat as time went on, but not entirely. Her fear of all that might happen when she was forced to marry only seemed to grow worse as she got older. Her radical beliefs — partially learnt from books she read, partly from her own realisation of how stifling and exhausting life within the ton was, and partially due to realising she, too, would have to go through the horrifying ordeal of childbirth if all went to plan — grew in time, her rebellion growing alongside.

broken hearts that makes us
