"All is fair in love and war,
but some battles leave
no victor, only a trail of
broken hearts that makes us
wonder if the price we pay
is ever worth the fight."

What was going on in Eloise's mind the moment she heard Penelope speak as Whistledown wrote? What were her thoughts from that moment to her searching through Penelope's room, to finding her stash of coin.? Tag: @eloisebridgerton

[attr="class","shinigami"] muse meta: the reveal. It was a moment of pure horror and disbelief to begin with. After the loss of her friendship with Theo, and her name being dragged through the mud in the Whistledown column, she'd truly thought she could rely on Penelope. Hearing her speak of gossip that must would not notice, in a way that sounded so familiar, it was like facing the ultimate betrayal. There was a part of her that truly didn't want to believe it at first, that wanted to reject the idea, hope that she was honestly just imagining it...when she and Penelope parted ways that evening, she took some time to herself at first, contemplated the words, comparing them to what she recalled from Whistledown, and how often her friend was by herself on the sidelines, being a wallflower, taking in all the gossip. Disbelief slowly turned to horror, realisation, and left her feeling like a fool. After such a long time of trying to find the author's identity, often going to her best friend with her ideas and excitement, only to be shot down? It all started to fall into place, to make sense. It was a sense she really didn't wish to have to find, a truth she didn't want to accept...which was what led her up to Penelope's chamber, part of her still hoping she'd find no proof, that it would be wrong. When she did come across her money stash, it was like all she'd hoped not to find had been realised. Not only had her best friend lied to her for well over a year, she'd also smeared her name, ruined the Bridgerton reputation, exposed Marina's pregnancy, ruined her friendship with Theo, all (in Eloise's opinion) to protect her own back. When she was finally alone that evening and allowed herself to break down in tears (something she never really liked to do), it was because of that betrayal, that hurt, all of those lies. For Eloise, it wasn't the fact that Penelope was Lady Whistledown, per se, for if she'd learnt sooner, it was perhaps a secret she would have helped her keep — it was all of those lies. It was the worst sort of betrayal she could have imagined, and that was all she could focus on from the very moment she started to recognise the familiar cadence in Penelope's words.
