William woke up in the middle of the night to grab a glass of water, not wishing to wake any of his servants up in the middle of the night. Above everything else, he respected them, paying their wages on time, even increasing them for some, believing that they truly deserved it. Opening the door to his bedroom, he took a few steps down the hall, down the spiral staircase, and straight toward the home's kitchen. His thoughts were fixed on the dream he'd just had about Philomena until he was distracted by the sound of a lady. His eyes widened at the sight of her bloodied abdomen, swallowing hard. It was one of his servants, Rose, and she seemed to be in distress. "Rose," The Duke commented, extending both his arms out to try and comfort her. "Rose, do not be afraid, I will call upon the family's doctor."

| That night had been a mistake. She knew it the moment it had happened, regardless of her feelings, or his. It should not have happened. The consequences of such an encounter began to make themselves known some weeks later, until she felt certain her suspicions were correct.
She would pay dearly for her lapse in judgement. Because what did she truly have to offer a child? Except a life of poverty and a father who could not be a part of their lives.
Waking in the middle of the night, she found the problem may just resolve itself. A throbbing pain in the lowest part of her tummy that dug so deep it kept her from finding sleep again.
Rose left the confines of her bedroom to venture towards the kitchen in hopes of retrieving a glass of water, as if that might help her find sleep. Her fingers trembled as she poured herself a glass and raised it to her lips.
Her free hand gripped the counter, curling fingers into the smooth surface as a sharp knife-like pain stirred, dragging a whimper from her throat. Tears prickled at the corners of her eyes, and as they fell, she did not know why she was crying, because surely this was for the best.
The sound of footsteps behind her caused her to turn and she wiped at those stubborn tears when she saw the Duke standing there, a mask of horror on his face. Then she saw that he was in fact not staring at her, his gaze fixed lower.
Looking down, she sucked in a breath upon seeing the expanse of red colouring the front of her white nightdress. "My Lord, I-I'm sorry" her words came between wretched sobs, raising her hand to grab his arm before he could touch her. "You needn't call a doctor; I will be alright" the last thing she desired was for the entire house to awake and learn of her situation.
"Please, I need nothing from you" she hated for him to see her like this, for anyone to see her. "Please, return to your room and make as if you never saw me tonight"

| -------------------------------------------- Frankly, the duke had never witnessed such an event before in his life but he knew what it was. Either she was giving birth to a babe or she was suffering a miscarriage. William Slade did go to Oxford, after all, and was taught several subjects, among them being the sciences. Any educated, well-mannered man would not leave a lady in such distress, even if she was practically begging him to leave her be. He would not have it under his roof. William may have been a cold man on the outside, but on the inside, he genuinely had a soft heart, as well as emotions just like any common man.
William approached her slowly and without even asking her, he lifted one of her arms and placed it over his shoulders. He would not force her to go upstairs, as it would be painful, but he would return her to the servant's quarters that she had just come from and call for help. She needed to be comfortable. "I will not return to my room until I see to your health, Rose." The Duke returned. She was under his employment after all and he felt a responsibility toward ensuring her safety.
He would not judge her pregnancy, either, or at least try not to. They were from diverse classes -- diverse backgrounds. If it were one of his sisters, the situation would have been entirely different. Finding the closest, empty room, Will led the younger redhead inside and laid her on the bed. "I will call for help. Stay here." Before even hearing her out, he left the room and knocked on his butler's door, requesting that he contact the family's doctor right away.
He knocked on a few of the maid's doors, and upon them opening for him, he informed him of Rose's condition. There would be no more discomfort at Apsley House that evening. Will would make sure of it. Re-entering her room, he addressed the lady in pain, "Rose, the doctor will be here shortly. Please allow Sybil and Florence to help you."

sobbing | Rose knew that leaving her room that night would come to be her deepest regret. Had she remained where she was, then no one would be aware of her plight, and she could deal with it without scrutiny. As it was, she had been discovered by none other than the master of the house, arguably the person she least wished to find her in such a state.
He approached her, and her first reaction was to flinch when his hand reached for her. But his touch was not harsh like she anticipated it to be, but gentle as he put her arm over his shoulders.
"I don't want no trouble" she protested, her free hand travelling to grasp at where the throbbing pain originated from. "You need not concern yourself with me" he thought he knew best, and perhaps he only sought to help, but the best way to help her would be to leave her be.
She could do little but allow him to guide her into an empty room, letting out a breath once he lowered her onto the bed. It was foolish to believe that he might leave her be now that he'd seen her to bed, but she was not so lucky.
"No, my Lord-" she called after him, but he'd already allowed the door to close behind him, gone on his mission to find someone who might be able to help.
Rose stared up at the ceiling, hand still resting on her stomach and for a moment she did not move. Then a sob shook her body, closing her eyes as the tears began to flow freely now that she did not have to worry about having an audience, and though she the pain in her abdomen was enough to ball her hands into the sheets and wish for relief, the ache in her chest was the source of her tears.
It was not as though she wanted a child. She could barely support herself, let alone another person who was entirely dependent upon her. But it was only now that she truly realized what she was losing, a child that was half him. It was a nice thought, that would now never become reality.
She knew that it was foolish to miss something that she'd never truly had, but her heart ached as though it had been ripped open.
Rose sucked in a breath and wiped at her eyes when she heard the door opening. Looking at the people who now stood in the room with her once she'd cleared her vision of tears, staring accusatorily at the Duke, but she did not have the energy to fight him any further.
Giving a slight nod, she turned to the women that he'd brought to her "I don't want anyone else to know about this, it stays between us" the last thing she wanted was for the entire household to know, or worse for rumour spread to the staff in neighbouring houses. |
