prompt: "Nothing's THAT important, you know." It was truly none of her business. Edith had absolutely no place saying anything at all to the Viscount. He was her employer, the head of the household, and she knew better than to say much at all around him. She didn't think him a cruel man, or anything of the sort, but she was sensitive, and always assumed it would be easier to stay out of his way, in case she said the wrong thing. Usually, it was easier to speak with Benedict, when she needed to speak to one of the Bridgertons. She'd been retrieving something from his study, somewhere she usually tried to avoid if she thought he'd be around, though it would have been far more awkward to have turned immediately around when she saw he was sitting in there. Instead, she'd quietly gone about her business, retrieving the parchment she required, eyes drifting towards where Anthony sat, hard at work. "Nothing's THAT important, you know," she found herself saying, the words slipping off her tongue before she could really think about it and stop herself. It was none of her business if he was hard at work, but he did look stressed — too stressed. "Forgive me, my Lord. I forgot myself. I shall leave you to your business."[attr="class","mizocredit"] [newclass=.mizocredit a]font:bold 6pt calibri;letter-spacing:1px;color:#b5d1f1;[/newclass]

Tag: @edith i am a viscount IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY Those within the Bridgerton household -- be it family or hired help -- knew better than to disturb the Viscount when he was in the study. He often worked within it well into the late hours of the night. Today however, he simply had a great deal of work. With his sisters coming out into society one by one -- practically one after another -- his affairs were growing more busy. As was socializing. After all, many wished to invite the Viscount out so that they may make a good impression and thus, believe they some advantage to court his sisters. Of course, little did they know that Anthony was not so easily swayed.
âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– When he heard footsteps enter without so much a knock, Anthony raised his head to see who had disrupted him. Edith Norton. He made it a point to know exactly who was hired and know their faces and the name that went along with it. He silently watched her, as she said nothing but rather, just went about her business to take what she needed. How incredibly bold of her. As if that was not bold enough, she then spoke of how nothing was that important, and Anthony just looked at her, concealing his surprise at her statement. Instead, he locked eyes on the woman with a stoic expression.
âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– Ordinarily he may not entertain her remark. Occasionally, he may dispute it but explaining all that he had to do. In this case however . . . he was not going to let her go so easily with a bold act and bold statement to match. "What do you have there?" He asked, referring to the parchment in hand as he set his quill down. "Surely, it is that important for you to enter without knocking or permission to do so." His words were echoing her own, questioning what boldness or foolishness caused her to say such a bold thing.

Immediate regret washed over her. What a foolish thing to say. She wasn't bold, wasn't the type to speak out of turn, or forget her place...and yet, she clearly had, for just a moment. She was so used to moving around the Bridgerton household relatively unnoticed – the children were all so loud and boisterous, and she was usually the quiet sort, not speaking unless spoken to, or with the rest of the help. Working for the Bridgertons was so much better than working for almost any other family of the ton, and she'd never want to do anything to jeopardise her position in the household...and yet, she may have done exactly that.Panic set in almost immediately. What a foolish thing she was. Knocking would have made perfect sense, though she hadn't realised at first it would be occupied...still, if only she'd knocked, she would have realised it was. She was used to time spent with Benedict, but his brother didn't seem to be as easygoing. He was the man of the house, the viscount, and her employer. He could fire her without a second thought, and she didn't see why he wouldn't. He'd have a new maid in no time.Tears sprung to her eyes, before she could stop herself. She'd always been emotional, and the notion that she might be out on the streets had her crying without a second thought. "I–I...I was asked to retrieve it by Miss Hyacinth's governess. I did not mean to – I should not have – my sincerest apologies, Lord Bridgerton." Tag: @edith i am a viscount IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY Anthony half expected her to rebuttle, to make another bold statement. But instead, he saw the sting of tears in her eyes, heard the stammer in her voice that held apology and then, her verbal apology that followed. Anthony let out a quiet sight, knowing that he should not be making young women cry. It was not exactly something a gentlemen should hold any pride in. Even if they were workers in the house, they were still people. He was raised by his parents being taught to treat everyone with kindness and honor -- and that was something that the Viscount prided himself in. He rose from his chair and walked over to her, pulling out a chair so that she may sit.
âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– "Have a seat," he politely urged. "And collect yourself before you return to your duties." While close to her, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, passing it to her so that she may dry her eyes. Once having handed it to her, he leaned against his desk, not yet sitting back to resume his work. He now felt . . . guilty over his short tone with the woman so decided it was best to distract from what happened so that she may leave with ease. "Is Hyacinth studying from the book you selected?" He asked. The question was not without total interest; he in fact, took a very active interest in his brothers and sister tutelage. He wished to know the progress of their studies as well as what their areas of both strengths and weaknesses were.

It had all been her own fault, all things considered. She should have knocked, and she shouldn’t have spoken out of her turn. It wasn’t her place to do so, and she’d never been the type to be quite so bold. It had been a foolish mistake, words slipping through her lips before she could really stop and think about it, and her tears were partially caused by her own stupidity. She shouldn’t have been so quick to speak out of turn, should have thought before she spoke up. She’d been taught better than that, her parents had both worked similar positions, and she’d been in much harsher households than that of the Bridgertons before they’d hired her.Gratefully, she accepted the handkerchief, feeling more than a little foolish for bursting into tears in front of the man of the house. She’d always struggled to control her emotions, but she’d never been anything other than silent in front of Anthony. He was the head of the household; the one who could choose to fire her at a moments notice — he had plenty of reason to do so after her foolish display. “Thank you, my lord. I—“ she paused, hiccuping back a small sob. How foolish she must have seemed. She sat, obeying his command, her hand shaking slightly, as she attempted to calm herself. No maid should be acting like this, especially in front of their employer! “My sincerest apologies. I…should have knocked, and I should not have spoken out of turn. I can assure you, I am not usually like this,” she sniffled. She’d always taken such great pride in her job, she didn’t wish to mess it up. “Yes, my lord, she is. I was asked to retrieve it, I-I did not imagine anyone would be in here. I should have checked.” [attr="class","mizocredit"] [newclass=.mizocredit a]font:bold 6pt calibri;letter-spacing:1px;color:#b5d1f1;[/newclass]

Tag: @edith i am a viscount IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY Anthony continued to watch the woman she as she cried, the pangs of guilt within him. Yet . . . intended to clear this unfortunate exchange by the time she was ready to leave the room. "Perhaps we had not adequately explained to you, the expectations upon entering my office." His not demanding nor condescending, but an admittance of responsibility so that she would absolve herself from at least some of the blame. "To explain it quite simply, one is required to knock before entering." There was -- dare he say -- the slightest of teases in his voice. Anthony was not one who teased another a great deal, but her tears had weakened him and he felt the need to replace the mood with a semblance of lightheartedness. His father had always taught him to treat the hired help well, respectfully and kindly. He would not do anything to dishonor that.
âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– "Truth be told, Miss Norton I am unsure what you are usually like as I have not been properly acquainted with you." Another admittance though this time not of guilt, but rather him not recognizing that her bold actions and bold statement were not simply the norm from her. He was relieved to find out it was not. For if someone had been intentionally and blatantly disrespectful to him . . . he could only imagine how they would treat his family. And that, was where he drew the line. "I considered that perhaps my own family's influence may have temporarily emboldened you. Something I would not fault you for." His words spoken with the same subtle tease as the earlier ones. Such was the case . . . especially if Edith was made to spend time with Eloise and Hyacinth.

All, it seemed, was not lost. Anthony didn't seem nearly as harsh or scary as she'd expected, though perhaps she should have expected he'd be kind, knowing his family. It wasn't as if she knew them all well, but she'd spent time with a lot of his siblings, spoken to his mother...it was something, enough to know that they were a much kinder family than most. He had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, but it seemed it hadn't killed his kindness entirely. Edith dabbed a few more tears with the handkerchief, swallowing down the need to shed anymore tears. Hopefully this would pass. "I can assure you, Lord Bridgerton, if I am to return to your office, I will knock, and not enter until I am permitted." It was a rather obvious rule of etiquette, but she'd be sure to follow it moving forward. She would have been far more careful walking into a chamber or something of the like, though an office, she supposed, could be just as private. Still, he'd managed to elicit a small smile from her. "I must admit, I have spent a lot of time with some of your siblings. Miss Eloise has certainly shown me to be bold..." It certainly wasn't supposed to be any sort of an insult towards his younger sister. If anything, the words were spoken with admiration. "I am quite used to..." she hesitated, having gotten used to referring to him as 'Benedict' now. "The younger Mr Bridgerton."
