i am a viscount
IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY
How had it come to this? One moment Anthony was being told that his presence was desired for business purposes . . . the next, he was in a room alone with Cressida and moments after, a hoard of people had entered. It was enough to entrap them both into a marriage. And yet . . . Anthony was not entirely objectionable. Despite the fact that this was certainly not how he had intended to marry his future wife, it was not the most . . . terrible of circumstances. The Cowper's were a notable family, one of the wealthier among the ton. And Cressida was . . . well, not as disliked by him as some of the women he had come to hear about.
But she was not, a terrible option. She seemed as if she would fit into the role of Viscountess -- perhaps -- and she was rather beautiful, any man would agree. And most importantly, Anthony was not looking for a love match. So perhaps this was for the best because . . . he knew he was never going to fall in love with Cressida. Just as he would prefer to remain it so. Yet, there was much that still needed to be discussed. He knew her as a woman eager to find her match with each passing season. But, he did not know her on any personal level. And while Anthony preferred that to some extent, he did of course have to ensure they held understanding, for they were both forced into this situation, with their wedding mere days away -- now that he had acquired a special license, the news he had yet to share with his . . . fiancé.
He arrived at her home, being led to the parlor where he was told to wait for her to arrive. He remained standing and did not have to wait long until she made her entrance. "Miss Cowper," he greeted lowering his head. "I hope I have not interrupted your afternoon." Because he had come unannounced yet, as he previously recognized . . . they had but mere days before their wedding. A wedding born of such circumstances was often one made in haste.
