george & leila.
As the elder of the two Crane brothers, George knew fine well he was expected to marry – especially now, with both of his parents gone. He'd spent so much time at Romney Hall, focusing on the estate, the finances, the household affairs and his younger brother...the idea of travelling from the countryside to London for a social season had never quite appealed, though he'd realised he had to stop putting it off. Were he to remain a bachelor, pressure would fall to Phillip – and he didn't wish to pass the baton to his younger brother. It was hardly fair. That was exactly how he found himself in Mayfair, how he found himself face to face with her. There was absolutely no way he should be stopping to speak to a lady out on the street like this. It wasn't the expected thing, wasn't the done thing, and while they could hardly be accused of being unchaperoned – there were plenty of other people outside, after all – it wasn't like he was approaching her at a ball, as he should. Still...he had approached before he could even stop himself. "Forgive my candour, but if I may be so bold – you are quite breathtaking..." Perhaps he sounded as if he was trying to hard to be charming, but he truly did mean it. "Might I inquire of your name, my lady?" | -------------------------------------------- Leila Khazen was out in English society. Her parent's had solely chosen the British Isles as not only had they had connections there, but also a home. They preferred their ways in comparison to Middle Eastern society. They were far less... limited. She had more choice here. She'd left the family's estate in Mayfair early that morning, accompanied by her lady's maid. She simply needed a breath of fresh air before the upcoming ball that evening.
Her thoughts had been interrupted by the voice of someone unfamiliar. Her lady's maid stayed behind as she gazed upon the soul who dared even speak to him without an official chaperone. It was improper, even in their society back home to address a lady in such a manner, but she admired his bravery. His candour. Not many held that attribute and she was not one for tradition, frankly. She'd been brought up with a son, somehow, while missing the x and y chromosomes when she left her mother's womb.
Curtsying, she responded, "Lady Leila of house Khazen. Do you not fear the eyes upon you at the moment, my lord...?" She asked for his name in return. |

It certainly was terrible bold of him to approach her in such a way, and that wasn't necessarily a good thing. George was many things, plenty of people said he was charming, but in this moment? He was quite the fool. At least they weren't alone in a room, at least her maid was right there, close by, but he was still unchaperoned, could still get into trouble for this at any second. It could still be considered a scandal, maid present or not. Still, he didn't turn away, let his gaze remain on her face. What a fool he was, just because he'd seen a pretty girl. "Crane. Sir George Crane," he offered, bowing his head slightly. Fear eyes upon him? Perhaps he should, but he didn't. He was a soldier, after all – at least, he would be, if he was ever called to join the battlefield – and he tried not to fear much. Given the father he'd been raised by, the fear had almost been beaten out of him. Phillip may have dealt with more of it than he had, but he'd stepped in a few times. "I suppose I should, but I don't. I may sound like quite the fool, but one doesn't get far in life if he doesn't take chances..." George paused, glancing to her maid. Would this be gossip in a mere few hours time? "You are quite beautiful, Lady Khazen." | -------------------------------------------- Maids were known to gossip about the ton, but not hers. At least she hoped so. She trusted Mary enough to maintain some sort of respect toward her, even if a man such as George Crane had approached her in the most ungodly of fashions. She glanced at Mary once, nodding, a quiet understanding between the two. Silence spoke louder than words, after all.
Offering him a small smile, "I thank you, Sir George," Ensuring that she did not compliment back but made it seem that she was somewhat interested in what he had to say. There was no denying that he was an attractive man. "No, I admire your candour," She added. "Not many men could do the same, at least not in my country or yours, from what I have seen so far." It was evident that she was not from there due to her accent. |

She was right, of course — this wasn’t the done thing. Especially now he was in London for the social season, he should have known better. He had to find a match, and should do so in the same way as everyone else…but how could he resist speaking to her, when she’d caught his eye? While his father had always been far harsher on Phillip than he was on him, George knew he could get into a lot of trouble for this. Nobody would take well to the way he was taking things into his own hands, but it was hardly the first time he’d been bold and used his charm to pursue someone who interested him. Away from the countryside, however, there was the small matter of Lady Whistledown. This could be quite scandalous indeed, more so if she was new in town.
“No, I suppose they would not. I have only been in Mayfair for a matter of days,” he admitted. It hardly explained it away, for he was still the oldest son in a noble family, has still been taught the etiquette required of a gentleman. He shouldn’t let that slide, no matter how beautiful he found her. “Where is it you’re from, my lady? And what brings you to London?” Perhaps, if he was lucky, she was looking for a match too.
