36. Our muses sitting at their a child’s sickbed. Sllade was unsure as to when the last time he felt this . . . panicked was. Though he showed no outward sign of it -- mainly to those who he did not call family -- he felt it. He had barley left his daughter's beside since they had first called the physician. She had a terrible flu and her fever was not breaking. Slade had just sent her governess -- Clara -- home to rest for she too had not left the child's side. And then of course there was Gilly. Gilly who appeared just as afflicted as Evelina for he was laying down next to her in bed and had not moved since Evelina herself had been bed ridden. Though Slade would not admit it, this terrified him. Were it some physical threat, at least he had his people in place to stop or prevent it. But this. This . . . he had no control over. And he was struggling to accept that. Refusing, to accept it.
âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– âť– While approaching footsteps pulled Slade from his thoughts, though he did not turn his head from his sleeping daughter. Slade did not even need to look to know who it was. He was familiar enough with everyone he held close to heart. "Is all well?" He asked, wondering if she came to inform him of a problem. Or if she had come simply to check on Evelina. Rather than waiting for her to ask, he continued. "Nothing has changed." Sitting on the edge of the bed, he leaned forward to dip the cloth into cold water and gently dab her forehead. It felt so odd, to see her in such a state. She was often so full of energy, so full of life . . . and did not stop talking for a moment. Now, she was sleeping, barley able to open her eyes and silent absent the whimper of pain and discomfort. If she did not make it . . . Slade could not even imagine what he would become.

mei & slade. When Min had first introduced her to Reuben Slade, and those who worked with and for him, Mei hadn’t envisioned finding a family. She’d been alone in the world then, attempting to get by however she could, after her parents had seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. It was the life she’d grown used to back then, but since meeting the ragtag group she now lived with, it felt as if she had a place in the world. They were the closest thing to family she had, which meant she was panicked about Evie, naturally. Doctors could only do so much, herbs and medicine could only go so far, and if her fever didn’t break…Mei wasn’t sure she wanted to witness what would happen next. How destroyed would Slade be if he lost her? How could they ever bring him back from that? No amount of words of encouragement could bring back a lost loved one — and she could only imagine that there would be no greater loss than losing one’s child. “None at all?” Mei’s voice was soft, a tone reserved only for deceit, and those she cared greatly about. With most she would stay out of the way, remain scarce, but she cared for her friend and his child, wanted to offer her support in whatever way she could. There was little she could do in actuality; the words and blades she usually used to help him out were futile here. “I wish there was more I could do. If there is, you need only say the word. Are these physicians the best we can get?” Moving deeper into the room, she hovered by the bedside, not liking to impose too much, but not wishing to abandon him in his time of need either. “She has your strength, I am certain.” [attr="class","mizocredit"] [newclass=.mizocredit a]font:bold 6pt calibri;letter-spacing:1px;color:#b5d1f1;[/newclass]
