.:Name:. Mary Sharma (née Sheffield) .:Nick Name:. n/a .:Rank:. Nobility (though, prior to Kate's marriage, they were penniless) .:Age:. 45
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. When she was young, Mary was named the diamond of the season, and has always been considered quite beautiful, though she has seldom worried too much about her appearance. She has reached middle-age gracefully, continuing to dress in similar colours to those she's always worn, matching with her daughters. Pinks, purples, blues...now she is back in society, she is happy to wear any colours that are 'in' at that time. .:Height:. 5'4 .:Portrayed by:. Shelley Conn
| ~ • ~ | Personality | ~ • ~ |
.:Personality:. At her core, Mary believes in the power of love, and will defend those she cares for with her entire heart. She can be stubborn, sticks to her guns, and does not allow anyone to walk all over her. Though she was once obedient almost to a fault, falling in love allowed her to realise that blindly listening to what she was told wasn't necessarily the right move to make. On occasion, if her children are in jeopardy, she is quick to anger, and slow to hold her tongue. Those she cares for will always be the most important thing, and that will always be her priority. .:Skills:. Strong-willed, maternal, believes strongly in the power of love and following one's heart. .:Weaknesses:. Willing to do & give up anything for those she loves, defensive where her children are concerned (can be both a skill and a weakness), can be short-tempered.

.:Birthplace:. London, England. .:Family:.
- Lord Sheffield, father
- Lady Sheffield, mother
- Kathani Bridgerton (née Sharma),
step-daughter - Edwina Sharma, daughter
.:Occupation:. none. .:History:. As a young girl, Mary Sheffield was ever the perfect daughter – eager to please, quick to learn the necessary social etiquette, and ensuring she did exactly as her parents and governesses asked of her. She enjoyed the idea of being out in society, overwhelming as she thought it might be, and as the Sheffield's only child, she knew there was a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. She wasn't an heir, wouldn't be able to continue the 'Sheffield' name, but she could still make her parents proud, and that was exactly what she intended to do.
At seventeen, she was presented to society, along with so many other young ladies – and though she'd prepared for that moment for what felt like her whole life, being named as the diamond of her first season came as a huge shock. Her parents, unsurprisingly, were thrilled...and Mary truly thought that would be that. A perfect match would be found, her dowry would assure her of that, and all would be well.
Part of that was indeed true. An Earl was found, a man with a large estate, a title, and a hefty amount of money...but fate had other ideas. Mary might have been quite pleased to make his acquaintance, even to become his wife, if she hadn't first met Vinay Sharma. Mary was drawn to him like a moth to a flame, not concerned by his lower status in society, nor by the fact he was a widower with a young child already. Long before he asked for her hand, she loved Kathani as if she was her own, and every moment spent with the Sharma family proved to her that this was the family she ought to belong to.
Traditional as her mother and father were, she knew it wouldn't go well. There was no way they would approve, no way they'd allow her dowry to go to a man of a lower class, nor would they allow him to have her hand. In love she came to be, however, she could not bring herself to care. Her parents had always cared too much about social class and status, whereas Mary simply wanted to be happy. Kate and Vinay made her happy, and perhaps naively, she thought her parents might come to accept the union, if only she gave it time.
When Vinay asked for her hand, Mary was quick to accept – and quick to announce the news to her parents. Their approval was something she craved, but not something that would change her mind. That very night, she was given a choice: marry the Earl they had secured for her, or be cut off from the only family she'd had up until that point. Devastating as it was to have to choose between the man she loved, and the parents who had raised her, it was hardly a question. She chose Vinay, and was quickly cut off from the Sheffield family. Moving to Bombay quickly after made perfect sense. There was nothing for her in London any longer.
A few years later, Edwina came along, and life was blissful. Two perfect daughters, a loving husband, and the perfect life away from all the pressures of high society. It seemed nothing could possibly go wrong. When tragedy did strike, Mary wasn't prepared. The loss of her husband hit her hard, and getting by without him was never going to be easy. As time moved on, she was able to grieve, to remain strong for the sake of her daughters, though money was incredibly tight for some time. The last of that money was eventually used to move the three of them back to London – a decision that, while it has proven to have its ups and downs, she hasn't regretted.

but some battles leave
no victor, only a trail of
broken hearts that makes us
wonder if the price we pay
