Lucy Granville and Thomas Tawney get caught up in a storm and must stay sheltered together until it passes.
As a bachelor living mostly alone, Thomas was never expected to host any parties. That was usually reserved for the lady of the house, and his mother preferred to stay in the country estate still mourning her husband's death. While she had technically come out of mourning some months prior, the loss still weighed heavily on her heart, and she avoided social engagements that only reminded her of what she could have had. His elder sister was often busy entertaining her own parties and taking care of her own children.
With the help of his younger sister, he managed to arrange a small gathering of other artists. It wasn't anything fancy, and mostly it was a chance to socialize, draw, paint, and get drunks. The wives were also included at Sophia's request so that she could have people to talk to for the night. And at the suggest of his friend George Strickland, Thomas sent an invitation to Henry and Lucy Granville. Things weren't off to an incredible start, though. While the few friends Thomas had knew he was a skilled artist, most of the ton didn't. And a house in the less fashionable area of Kensington earned his a slew of replies claiming to be already otherwise engaged. It was also rather forgettable that Thomas' grandfather who died nearly twenty years ago was a great art collector and that the family possessed quite a few rare pieces of art.
Darkness fell over London, and heavy clouds came laden with rain. The house was illuminated with the soft glow of candles, and the night turned into one with more drinking than drawing. George managed to coax Thomas to show off one of his old sketchbooks from Africa, and the pages were filled with drawings of animals, landscapes, buildings, and women in beaded dresses wearing elaborate head dresses. Other women were garbed in bright colors that made even a dress from the modiste look drab, and they exposed far more skin that anyone would dare think respectable. The men were dressed in fur capes made from cheetah and leopards. They carried almond shaped shields with spears, and to an uneducated eye, it looked like they wore skirts made from animal tails.
As the night wore on, conversation quickly turned to gossip and opinions on the latest edition of Lady Whistledown. There was only a thinly veiled attempt at keeping the conversation appropriate for ladies' delicate ears, though anyone who wasn't more drunk than not would easily be able to pick up on the suggestive comments and disparaging remarks.
Nearing midnight, there was a flash of lightning followed by the deep booming roll of thunder. For the men, they were quick to make their excuses and send for their carriages to be home before the worst of the storm came. "Mrs. Granville, will you require an escort home tonight? I shan't put you out in the storm alone. Your company tonight has been most welcome." Wind and rain battered the windows, and it was impossible to see the ground from the first floor drawing room. More lightning and thunder shook the house, and the there was hardly any delay. "If you'd rather wait until morning, I can have the maid set up a room for you. It's no trouble at all. It's hard to tell how long this storm will last."

Parties were something Lucy was more than used to, for they were a big part of the life she'd built with Henry Granville. When she'd first been out in society, she hadn't exactly envisioned this sort of lifestyle for herself, but in truth, she couldn't be happier. She'd been verging on a lifetime of spinsterhood when she'd met him, and while their marriage was hardly a love match, it sounded them both perfectly. They were able to both have the freedoms they wished for, both do as they pleased, with whom they pleased, knowing their spouse was aware and fully supportive. Often, they were the ones hosting the parties – and any party with the artsy crowds they spent time with tended to go a certain way. There was always drinking, always smoking, often a lot of sex between willing, but often married members of the ton, and those outside of it. If a lot of high society could have seen those events, they likely would have been more scandalised than they knew what to do with. For Lucy, however, she couldn't imagine anything better. She'd lucked out in the marriage department. Thomas wasn't a gentleman she knew well, but they'd decided to go to his party, regardless. She wasn't sure whether it would be nearly as out there as those in their home, but it turned out to be a decent night, nevertheless. With alcohol, and none of the stuffy members of the ton, there was little to ruin the vibes of the evening, and all seemed to have gone well...until the end of the night, anyway. A little bit of rain had never hurt anyone, but it was clear the storm was far worse than that. Lucy glanced out of the window, watching the lightning crack in the darkened sky. Horses could easily spook in this kind of weather, and home wasn't nearly close enough for anyone to feel safe walking. His offer, therefore, was quite welcome. She wouldn't wish to drag anyone else out in such weather, which meant waiting for the storm to pass was probably her safest bet. "Are you quite certain you don't mind if I stay? I think that might be the safest option, at this hour. It seems to only be getting worse out there." Unlike the rest of the art crowd, a good night for Thomas didn't include debauchery. He was an outlier in that regard, but it never bothered him. It wasn't even that he found it immoral or repulsive. Something about smoking cigars, drinking whiskey, and then disrobing to engage in carnal pleasures didn't appeal to him as much as it had five or six years ago. Though he could never say it, taking a mistress and then having a child with her made the reality of being too free a sharp slap in the face. When the time came where he could neither marry her nor remain a part of her and the infant's life, it was a jarring wake up call to the nature of his position in life.
"I don't mind at all. I feel far better knowing you're someplace safe for the night." He stepped over a small round table and rang the bell sitting on it. It didn't take long for a maid to appear carrying a candle. She curtsied in front of Thomas with a demur 'My lord' in greeting. "Lady Granville will be spending the night with us. Have the Skyros room prepared for her."
"As you wish, my lord." She left to do as she was told. Despite Thomas's tendencies to take matters into his own hands when it came to horses and wine, he was just as comfortable instructing servants and acting as everyone thought an earl should. "Would you like anything more to eat or drink? I know the evening wasn't as active as I've heard Sir Henry's parties are, but I hope the night wasn't too dull for you. Are you an artist yourself?"
There was another flash and boom. The rain was pounding at the windows with the force of pebbles, and the candle flames near the window flickered and swayed. Thomas poured himself another glass of whiskey and gestured the decanter towards her in silent inquiry. "Please, sit if you like. It won't take the maid long. I won't trouble you too long if you're tired."

While Lucy was no stranger to the touch of men and women alike at parties thrown in the Granville estate, that wasn’t what she went to parties for. She enjoyed people’s company, befriending those who didn’t think as traditionally as the rest of the ton. She and Henry had always been very forward thinking, she’d known he was gay before they’d married, and she was at her most comfortable with others who seemed to share similar ideals. Artsy types always seemed to be of the same ilk, always seemed that bit more open minded than many others. Parties like this, regardless of how tame they were, were far better than any ball hosted for the rest of the ton. Aside from a bit of gossip to giggle over, there was never much that occurred to pique her interest at those events. That evening had been no exception, she’d enjoyed herself and was happy to remain longer, even if only to avoid the storm. She was fairly certain Henry had left with Wetherby some time ago, and he’d hardly mind if she didn’t make it home. It wasn’t the first time, and there was a genuine reason this time — a storm, not simply a night spent with someone else. “It was a perfectly splendid evening, my lord,” she assured, with a soft smile. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, they didn’t need much more than few drinks and some decent conversation for that. The conversation wasn’t nearly as stifling as it was in crowded ballrooms, playing like they fit in with everyone else. “I am quite alright as far as refreshments go, but thank you. You have been a very generous host.”Moving to sit down, she shook her head, brushing off the mention of being tired. Parties often went on much later than this, she was never the type to call it a night too early, though the weather certainly made a difference to everyone staying too late. “As for your previous question…I dabble in the arts, though I cannot claim to be the best artist. It is, however, something I enjoy. What sort of art do you do?”[attr="class","mizocredit"] [newclass=.mizocredit a]font:bold 6pt calibri;letter-spacing:1px;color:#b5d1f1;[/newclass]

Thomas was glad that she'd enjoyed herself. While he had been slightly disappointed at the turnout, none but him and his servant knew exactly who had been invited. So far as the guests were aware, they were all that were intended. An intimate evening to just relax and socialize with no other motives or expectations. "I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself. The change in weather was certainly unexpected. With luck, the storm won't last." Though, with the rain lashing at the windows, it was hard to feel certain about the storm being over quickly.
"No artist at truly at their best until they're dead. There's also some place to improve and something new to learn when alive. I enjoy portraitures, though I have very few examples to show. Otherwise, landscapes and animals. There's something about trying to capture the soul of a creature that looks and thinks so differently than ourselves, and yet, still so full of personality. Elephants are capable of mourning, and ducklings look at their mother with such love and devotion." He took a seat opposite of her and sipped at his whiskey. There was a pleasant warmth to it that made the stormy night more bearable, and it let him feel more relaxed in the otherwise precarious position of being a single man with a beautiful and married woman.
"Though of late, I've found it hard to draw. I dare not show you my current sketchbook. Uninspired, half finished drawings and dabs of paint without meaning. It was once a great escape from the duties of war. I'd been hoping that being in the company of other artists might spark something fresh." But the evening had passed without any sort of putting pencil to paper. Not that he minded in his heart. He wouldn't have been able to think of anything anyways. "If I may, Lady Granville, what pulls you to the artistic world?"

lucy & thomas.
Ever since she was a little girl, Lucy had been the creative sort, though she wasn't necessarily the best at any sort of art. She certainly didn't have the talent of her husband, though her mind worked in creative ways, and she did enjoy trying to put pencil or paintbrush to paper, even if the end result would never be as good as one might hope. That was okay, though, for art wasn't necessarily about being the best...for her, it was a hobby, and something she greatly admired when it came to others. "That is quite a beautiful sentiment," she told him, and she meant it. Animals were fascinating indeed, and she could see why he'd be drawn to such a thing. It must have been quite different from portraying a subject who could actually listen to instruction, understand what was being said to them. Henry always seemed to work on portraits, though she'd love to see attempts at portraits of animals. Perhaps she should suggest such a thing to him...or ask to see Thomas' work. "I would love to see some of your work sometime, if you have any. I have always been quite drawn to art." There was simply something about both art and artists. Creative types always seemed to have the most fascinating souls, one could not help but being drawn to such people. "Art itself is so subjective, it is all so beautiful, even when people do not understand it. It is incredible to see one so willing to bare their soul on a canvas," she mused, and she meant it. She may not have been the best artist herself, but there was still vulnerability in trying. "And artists are always the most fascinating people. The most open, the most free. Those who have graced us with their presence tonight are far more openminded than most of the ton will ever be. Would you agree, Lord Warrington?"
