S U M M A R Y
Ben Fowler is the sort of person who never thought he'd be much of anyone, and then was suddenly dropped into the lap and fortune. He's out of his depth and his element, and in a very real sense, is a fish out of water. He wants to be agreeable without knowing what agreeable is, and the life he lived before the ton did nothing to prepare him for it. He's interesting once given a chance to shine and takes on after his father as being a great speaker. He's more confident talking to an audience than on the dance floor. He's still discovering himself away from his beloved ships and likes intellectual pursuits. Any splash he makes it likely to an unexpected one.

Ben is always in need of friends, but he has really no idea how to go about getting them. Since he was thirteen, he's been on board a ship surrounded by men and never taught the good manners that other gentlemen learned from birth. But, he's keen to learn and will happily take up gentlemanly pursuits. He enjoys the company of a few people at a time away from the judgment of all of society. Given his overall lack of connections, he's also quick to latch onto anyone who shows him an ounce of kindness.
E N E M I E S
As the son of a village parson, Ben falls to the lower end of who's considered a gentleman. He's a nobody, even in his native Worcestershire. In a way, he represents a modern threat to the ton. Money that he earned through his own merit but was never part of society before. It's easy to look down on him or mock his lack of breeding, but he's still there, and he's still competition for the various young ladies interested in finding a match.
L O V E R S
The kind of woman Ben wants to love and the kind of woman he's likely to attract are two very different things. He wishes for someone who shares his love of adventure and travelling. He wants someone who he can share stories with and in turn, will create new ones with him. He wants someone who would enjoy spending months at sea, and when he eventually becomes captain, will join him at his lonely table. He doesn't care about dowries or prestige or titles. Even a common girl could share his dreams. But, as a young man with considerable fortune and no reputation to damage, he's likely to attract poor girls chasing his wealth or less reputable families trying to marry off into obscurity and can provide a comfortable life. With him being away more often than not, love doesn't need to be important. A woman looking to marry in search of the freedom an absent husband offers might also find a lieutenant an attractive choice. As a gentleman, the expectation is that he marries into society, and a wife from a better family improves his position in the ton. But that would only matter if Ben knew or cared about such things.
