She was only young when her father died suddenly as a result of a bee sting, a tragic blow to the whole family. Shortly after her mother went into labour, prompted by the distress of her husband’s passing and during this traumatic event Daphne tried to comfort her sister Eloise by singing to her.
At the start of the 1813 social season Daphne made her debut in front of Queen Charlotte who declared her flawless, instantly making her the ‘diamond’ of the season.
In an attempt to escape the attentions of the odious Sir Nigel Daphne arranged a rouse with the Duke of Hastings which lead to a genuine courtship and mutual affection. They married and despite many troubles as newlyweds their union was eventually a happy one. Daphne gave birth to their first child Augie in 1814.
