Lady Whistledown is an anonymous author who writes a gossip column, distributed throughout London and perhaps, even beyond. Her column started in 1813 and quickly rose to popularity, even capturing the interest of Queen Charlotte herself. Her articles stand out in that they list subjects by name, exposing scandals and secrets that others strive to keep hidden. Her word, is as good as gospel and whether true or not, though more often is held as truth, her words are believed.
She holds a rather incredible power among civilians. Some do not wish to cross her out of fear of being mentioned in her column; others feel flattered that they are merely mentioned. Either way, Whistledown has the ability to break or create unions, make predictions, propose challenges, offer stinging insults, and anything else that you can imagine. All the while, her identity remains unknown. Despite all the theories and attempts to uncover her true identity, no one has been successful. She remains protected, with the help of perhaps an ally though throughout the series of her columns, has also developed a few enemies due to her bold truth and blunt perceptions.
Her articles are released during the London season and cease when it is over. Now that the readers have had a taste of Lady Whistledown, perhaps they will approach the following season with caution. Or... perhaps not.
