Phillipa had spent most of the night dancing but now she was standing sipping her lemonade looking around the room. She remembered what her sister had said about being able to watch and observe. It was interesting to see who gravitated towards whom and it was then she noticed another lady like herself just standing in the back of the room. After refilling her glass Phillipa walked over to her with a friendly smile on her face. Hello there, I am Phillipa Featherington.

Balls were not something Elizabeth was fond of. There was too much fake smiling and to be quite honest, she didn't like dodging suitors every chance she got. She knew the truth was that they were after her only for her money and title. Her father being a Marquis made Elizabeth an appealing choice for a wife, but somehow she found herself sticking to the back of the room for the time being. It was only a matter of time before her step mother found her and pulled her back out to show her off. But for now, the silence was a gentle reprieve.
Looking over, Elizabeth smiled at the woman. "Hello," she greeted. "Lovely to meet you. I'm Elizabeth Davenport." She knew more of Phillipa's sister, Penelope, due to Elizabeth's family being close with the Bridgertons.

Phillipa had already noticed how beautiful this lady was, it was a surprise that she was not out on the dance floor with one of the many handsome men here. It is wonderful to meet you, I know we are here to supposedly find a spouse but I would prefer to make some new friends instead. She glanced over at the dance floor and then noticed her mother watching her. She sighed. Do you loathe these events too? I feel like its just horrible to be put on display as if we are nothing more than a doll to be fussed over. She turned her back towards her mother and continued to linger here talking with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth smiled and nodded her head. "I would be pleased to make a new friend this evening," she agreed. "I must admit, I am less than thrilled with the idea of finding a spouse tonight. I'm quite content to hide from over-eager gentlemen." They all wanted to dance and impress with the daughter of the Marquis. Elizabeth had done her fair share of socializing for the evening so that it wouldn't look poorly upon herself or her family. She might have disliked all of this but Elizabeth would never do anything to reflect poorly on her family or to put her father in an awkward position. She loved them far too much.
She smiled yet again, finding herself rather fond of Philipa Featherington already. She wasn't sure what she thought of the girl before properly meeting her, except maybe that she had assumed she would love all of this. "I am not fond of being used as an accessory," she admitted, her voice a little lower so that those around her could not hear. Elizabeth noticed that Philipa's gaze kept wandering elsewhere and she looked to see where she was looking, only to see the matriarch of the Featherington family sending them a look. She was likely displeased with her daughter speaking with Elizabeth and not off trying to gain favor with eligible bachelors. "Your mother appears to think differently though," she added with a small smirk.

Phillipa could already tell that she liked this girl, the more they talked the more they seemed to have in common. They were both done with the social scene this night and it was so nice to have someone to talk to who understood. Well then as of this night you have another friend in me. Whenever you need to escape the attention just come find me and we will wander off together. She glanced around them. There are quite a few very over-eager gentlemen here tonight and just as many marriage-minded Mothers as Lady Whistledown likes to call them. When her new friend dropped her voice Phillipa did as well. I know, if we are not being talked of as an accessory then they are judging us on whether or not we would be at child-bearing. I am not ready to even begin to think of that, marriage is an overwhelming thought on its own. When Elizabeth mentioned her mother Phillipa looked over at her and sighed. She doesn't understand me, I don't want to throw myself at suitors like I am begging to be married but that is what she wants us to do. It makes me sad that my own mother thinks I need to beg for a husband.

Elizabeth smiled and nodded her head. She found it refreshing but also rare to find someone that was willing to forgo an evening of being wooed to spend time with a friend. The women here were so desperate to make a good match that they usually were rather rude to other women. Friendships were the least of most girls' concerns. For Elizabeth, she would rather make friends than try to find a husband. "I think that sounds like a lovely idea," Elizabeth said with a grin. Wandering off was her favorite thing to do at these events and she usually roped Benedict Bridgerton into doing so with her. Of course, it would be more acceptable for her to wander off with a friend than a man. Her and Benedict never wandered too far, not wanting to get people talking to ruin either of their reputations. "I usually rope Benedict into saving me from these things, so it will be nice to have another ally."
She chuckled and nodded her head. "Yes, it is one thing entirely to change your life by getting married but to be expected to have a child within a year? I can hardly comprehend it." A lot of people did it but it wasn't something Elizabeth wanted for herself. She glanced back over at her mother, knowing that she seemed quite overbearing. Whistledown often tore the Featherington family apart and Elizabeth sometimes thought it was sad. She couldn't imagine having the scrutiny of the papers on her like that. "It is unfortunate that our worth seems to be quantified by whether or not we can find a husband," she said with a sigh.

Talking with her Phillipa was feeling relaxed and it was a welcome change. Normally she always felt so uncomfortable in these events. All eyes on her made her worry with her every move. This was so different and even with her mother glaring at her Phillipa kept doing as she wished. The Bridgerton boys are always kind enough to save a lady in distress. Phillipa gazed across the room locating the Bridgerton boys one by one until she found her favorite, her secret crush. He never noticed her but she still followed his every move whenever she could but she was always careful not to get caught. If the right man asked I would gladly do all that and more but it's a shame we are not worth more.

To hear that if the right man would ask, that Philipa would gladly do those things, made Elizabeth pause and think for a moment. If the right man asked her to marry, would she throw all her morals and opinions out the window for him? She would like to think she was more strong willed than that but she knew she could not be sure. On more than one occasion she had complained about the women who changed everything about themselves to fit what a man was looking for. Did these women have no dignity? Elizabeth supposed she shouldn't judge, knowing that everyone had a different circumstance.
"I think you are worth as much as you believe yourself to be," Elizabeth said to Philipa. She looked at the woman and smiled. "You must have confidence in your worth, Philipa. If you cannot see it, how can anyone else expect to?" It was meant as a kind notion, of course. Glancing around for a moment, Elizabeth spotted a people she knew and those she wished to not have a conversation with. "Are there any suitors in particular you have your eye on? Perhaps I can help." Elizabeth was well versed in the knowings of the gentlemen at these events.

This was such a refreshing change spending a night talking with a friend rather than standing on the sides waiting for a gentleman to ask her to dance. Phillipa had never had anyone talk so freely to her. It was nice to speak freely and Elizabeth's advice hit home with her. Thank you Elizabeth, you are the only person who has ever given me such wonderful advice. I do need to believe in myself, it's hard to remember that when I'm only being judged by whether or not I'm engaged. She laughed then turned her eyes to see who else was here. There are so many handsome men here, I'll tell you a secret...I've always had the biggest crush on Viscount Bridgerton.

She was quite glad that her new friend had taken her words in stride and not taken offense to them. There was really no telling how people would take anything Elizabeth said when she was speaking more freely. Most of the time, she kept these types of conversations to people she trusted the most but in that moment, she had been unable to help herself from telling Philipa her own thoughts. It was important that she know that she must believe in herself first and foremost. "You are quite welcome," Elizabeth said with a smile. She let out a small sigh and nodded her head in agreement. "Yes, it appears to society, that is where our worth lies." It was unfortunate and not fair, but there was nothing either lady could do about it.
Elizabeth leaned in closer to hear who Philipa might have her eye on. She was surprised to learn that she fancied Anthony and tried to think about what she wanted to say before she just blurt something out. To Elizabeth, she could see the appeal of Anthony but knew that he was not someone she could ever seriously consider for herself. She found him to be far too serious and their families were far too close. "Because he's handsome?" Elizabeth asked, a smile on her face. "I can't imagine it's because he makes you laugh," she teased. "I find him awfully serious most of the time."

This conversation was so refreshing to Philipa as she had never gotten to be so open with anyone without having her Mother or sisters listening in. Talking alone with Elizabeth was a delight and she loved how her new friend was already encouraging her to take more pride in herself, Elizabeth was not wrong but for years all she had heard from her Mother was how a ladies worth came from the husband that she landed. Now she liked thinking instead that her worth came from how she felt about herself and only she could be the judge of that. Standing with Elizabeth it was interesting to watch the others, her Mother was flitting between her sisters obviously trying to push them out to the dance floor again but only with the best partners. She loved that her Mother wanted the best for them but what if the best wasn't really the best? When Elizabeth commented on her secret crush Philipa sighed looking over the the object of her affection. I think that the poor Viscount gets harshly misjudged. I have seen him many times being quite amusing. He is an excellent marksman. Well I have known him for years and our families spend quite a bit of time together. My Mother would love to marry one of us into the Bridgerton family. She sighed again then laughed forcing herself to look away from him. Now he probably sees me as just another of his sisters annoying friends. Now your turn, is there any man here who draws your eye?

It was one of those moments where Elizabeth had to recognize that her upbringing was likely vastly different than that of Philipa's. Her own parents had been lovely, warm, and caring. Until her mother's passing, Margaret had been incredibly present in the lives of her children and their upbringing. She was someone Elizabeth could rely on and she knew her mother loved her deeply. There was never any pressure to conform to society's expectations, but rather explained why these were the expectations and why it might be important. But the pressure to marry someone well had never been pressed upon her and she found herself believing that all might not be the case for Philipa.
She had to agree that Anthony had his moments of humor, but Elizabeth did not spend a lot of time with him to see them these days. Her memories of such things were prior to the passing of Edmund but she'd always hoped that the old Anthony was hidden away in there. "He cares deeply to take care of his family and to ensure he is upholding his duties," Elizabeth pointed out. None of which, were bad things in the least. Elizabeth found herself chuckling at the mention of Philipa's mother loving the idea of marrying one of her daughters into the Bridgerton family. It seemed to be a common desire amongst the mamas of the Ton. "I'm sure she would." Then the question of who Lizzie might be fond of arose and she found herself hesitating. It was not that she did not trust Philipa, but she supposed she did not know her rather well and did not know if the information could be repeated. Her fondness for Jeremy was not being talked about and she wanted it to stay that way, as she knew Jeremy preferred his privacy. "No one here tonight," she spoke, a twinkle of mischief in her eye for a moment.

The feelings she had for Anthony had been around for so long that Philipa knew that sooner or later she would have to either tell him and brave his reaction, or she would have to try to swallow back her feelings and hope that she didn't react too much when he finally married. God how would she feel seeing him with a wife! That was something she was dreading and as she stared over at him again she wished she was braver. She smiled as she listened to Elizabeth, It sounds like you know Anthony as well as I do. Then she looked over at Elizabeth with a smirk on her face. It was obvious that Elizabeth was watching someone here but Philipa was not surprised that she did not share a name yet. They had just met and honestly she was surprised she had already confided to her but she trusted her. A beautiful lady like you won't be lonely for long, there is someone out there for each of us. Some just take longer to find.Philipa glanced over at Anthony one last time then she scanned the room. There are a few families missing tonight it looks like.
