It was strange to think of how much time had passed since she'd married Anthony. Less than a year, but it felt like longer. It felt like they had been doing this forever. Of course, that wasn't to say they didn't get into arguments over silly things now and again. Both were too stubborn and headstrong to sit idle on certain things. Elizabeth struggled, feeling like Anthony held back from her but there was nothing she could do about it. In truth, she loved him, but did not know if he truly felt the same about her. But their marriage worked; they spent far more time with the Bridgertons than the Davenports, but Elizabeth really didn't mind. Growing up she felt as if she had always been over at the Bridgerton house more than her own, especially after the death of her mother.
To find out that she was likely with child was something that Elizabeth didn't know how to handle. It would make sense, given her change in behavior recently. Sometimes her mood changed at the drop of a hat and then there were times that she simply could not keep her hands to herself when it came to Anthony. She'd not felt well that morning and so had called a doctor to see upon her while Anthony was out, not wanting to tell him in case he worried. Then again, when did he not worry? The doctor had all but confirmed it and left, no doubt Anthony would hear of the doctor visiting as soon as he stepped through the door.
Sitting in the drawing room with a book on her lap, Elizabeth tried to focus on the words but found she simply couldn't. She was to be a mother. It wasn't anything she thought too much of, especially as she grew older and began to come to terms with the idea that she might not get married to someone she loved or have children. Of course, she knew love was not required for children but why would she want to bear the children of a man she could not care for? Her mind was so busy that she did not even hear the arrival of her husband, far too lost in her own thoughts.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony had some work to do in the morning and then a couple of meetings at the gentleman's club. Elizabeth and he had been married for half a year and things were going quite well. They got along, apart from the occasion spats which Anthony was fairly certain was normal for a couple to have. They were never too serious, and never lasted abnormally long. So yes. Life married to Elizabeth was going splendidly well, and Anthony was very glad for the day he had thought to propose to her. For Anthony, he kept things at the surface. He himself did not delve deep into his feelings when it came to Elizabeth; keeping a wall up . . . a level of denial so that he may live out the remainder of his limited years without fear of dying. Something he had long since accepted. For if he ever truly loved someone . . . then fear of dying would naturally follow. And, he could not fear the inevitable. He had to accept it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ The butler informed him that the physician had visited and Anthony slightly raised an eyebrow in curiosity. The butler continue to assure him that everything seemed to be alright, but clearly having no details on the matter. Curious, Anthony made his way to the drawing room where he saw Elizabeth sitting with a book and looking . . . different. Was it her demeanor? Her complexion? Perhaps a combination of everything. But he knew with certainty that something had happened that clearly called for the visit from a doctor.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Elizabeth," he greeted as he took a seat next to her. "Is all well?" He asked. "What did the doctor say?" He further inquired so that he may gather all the information and once and things be made clear. It did not seem to be injury, so that left only sickness. And sickness was one thing that truly worried the Viscount, for he knew he was quite powerless to do anything to aid someone who was sick. A frightening thought indeed.

It wasn't until she felt the couch sink and Anthony speak close to her that she turned to look at him. He asked what the doctor said and she frowned for a moment. "How . . . ?" She trailed off for a moment before realization dawned on her. Of course, he would have been told as soon as he arrived home. The people that worked in their house were expected to tell Anthony everything that went on as he was not only Viscount, but man of the house in general. It was unlikely that they would ever show any loyalty to Elizabeth over Anthony, not that she would ever expect them to.
She shook her head and closed the book on her lap. "I'm fine," she assured him. Pursing her lips, she looked off to the side for a moment. Elizabeth and Anthony had their spats but she had never lied to him before and it didn't take much for anyone in the Bridgerton family to learn what Elizabeth's tells were when it came to lying. Should she try to do such a thing, he would see right through her. But she had never lied to him before and she certainly wasn't going to start now. "I'm with child," she mumbled, keeping her expression blank while she continued to avoid eye contact with him. But oh God how she knew how Anthony hated it when she mumbled. "The physician believes that I am with child," she said more clearly.
It wasn't the best timing, but there was nothing she could do about it now. Elizabeth's feelings regarding Anthony had been so confusing lately. Shouldn't one be happy to fall in love with their husband? But how could she when she felt like he was constantly keeping her at arms length. Of course, that wasn't to say that he was particularly cold towards her; not at all. It just wasn't what she had seen between her own parents, or even what she'd seen between Anthony's parents. So was she the problem? Was something wrong with her to make him not love her?

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony listened to her initial words as they trailed off, the question unfinished yet understood. Perhaps she was asking about how he had come to know this . . . and her words trailed off either because she had realized the answer, or . . . because of her demeanour which Anthony could tell was rather subdued. Not wanting to risk her potentially not knowing, he decided to answer it anyway. "Jarvis told me," he explained. As soon as Anthony had come in which was for the best for such news should not be prolonged to be told.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He wanted to ask again out of concern, but she then reassured him that she was fine. That was what he needed to hear and yet, there was clearly more to it. If she was truly fine, then what was causing her to be in such a state? Something was troubling her and surely it had to do with the doctors visit. Anthony remained quiet, patiently waiting for further explanation which he was certain would come. She would not leave him hanging. And then, she said it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖
"I'm with child."
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ No. She mumbled it. Though Anthony understood the words, it took him several moments to process them. And during that time, she spoke them more clearly, saying that the physician believed she was with child. She was with child. She was to be a mother. He was to be a father. The news should excite! And it perhaps did as Anthony felt his heart swell with joy and happiness . . . honor in soon being a father. And yet, the way such news was delivered brought him further concern.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Having children was the natural path following marriage. An, expectation really. Besides, it was not as if Anthony was taking any precautions to prevent a potential pregnancy. So surely, there was that understanding between them. At yet, there was almost a somberness to her delivery of this news. A . . . displeasure if you will. Anthony was unsure if he was accurately describing her tone of voice but it was all he could observe after the months of knowing her as his wife.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He remained silent for many moments, studying her expression to see if it would give him any further insight as to why she may not be happy about this. It did not. So he knew that the only way he could understand . . . was to ask. "And this news . . . " He began to say as he carefully watched her. "Does not bring you joy?" It was both a statement and a question. Opening it up to further explanation from her part so that he could understand why she was not telling him with a smile, or an embrace. Why it sounded as if the physician's words were a curse rather than a blessing. Why it seemed she could not even bring herself to look at him as she told him this. Yes. There was most certainly more to this indeed.

She was unsure how much time had passed since the physician confirmed her pregnancy, but she felt as if she needed more time to herself to sort through her own thoughts. Anthony's arrival had happened all too soon for her liking and now she struggled with what to say, which was entirely unlike Elizabeth. She always had something to say and more often than not just spoke her mind. But this was something she didn't know how to voice. The wrong thing and she would ruin everything between her and Anthony. Elizabeth was not sure if she could stand to make him not want to be in the same room as her.
His question rang through her ears like a bell. How was she supposed to answer that? Elizabeth felt happy that she was going to be a mother, even if she questioned her ability to be a good one. She adored children and loved when her brother Alexander visited with his own son. Elizabeth had long ago abandoned the possibility of having children, unsure as to what her future held and she supposed she had never re-introduced the idea to her own mind after marrying Anthony. Of course, it was nothing they had discussed but it had been assumed children would be in their future.
No noise left her mouth but she felt a tear slide down her cheek. Perhaps Anthony was not paying attention and she quickly wiped it away. "Forgive me, my emotions appear to be quite uncharacteristic." Something he might have noticed as of late depending on how much he cared to observe his wife. "I'm sure it can just be attributed to fears many women have," Elizabeth said.
Still, Elizabeth had barely looked at him. She'd never felt so paralyzed by her own fears and thoughts. What had become of her? Marrying someone that did not love her had never been an issue before, so why was it now? Perhaps it was the mere idea that she felt herself falling in love with Anthony and knew he did not feel the same and did not believe him to have any interest in loving her. It wasn't to say that he was a bad husband as he treated her quite well and maybe in a different way he cared about her. But Elizabeth did not understand why this was having such a great effect on her. Still, the little voice in the back of her head told her that she had promised Anthony to never lie to him if he never lied to her.
Elizabeth rose from her seat on the couch to cross the room to get herself a glass of water. She lifted the pitcher and poured herself a glass, biting the inside of her cheek as she worked up the courage to say something. With the glass in her hand, she turned to look at Anthony. Her features were once again composed and opened her mouth to speak. "I think I am quite afraid that if you cannot bear to spend time with me any longer, you will not wish to spend time with and love this child. If I have done something to displease you to cause such a change, then I do wish you would tell me." Elizabeth did not understand why all of a sudden Anthony had changed around her. They did not spend time together as they used to. He avoided her as far as she was concerned. She tapped her finger against the glass, now averting her gaze from Anthony.
