Laurel is the only daughter of a woman who had scandalized the ton & thoroughly disappointed her parents, the Viscount & Viscountess of Hatton, in marrying beneath her. A man who not only was a notorious gambler but he was a successful one to boot. It was rumored Aiden Hawkins, a little known & new baron, had won the hefty fortune off one of Arabella's would be suitors & ruined his prospects for several seasons.



Her father's gains increased both in money & friends for years before his wife finally delivered a healthy baby girl. Laurel only has a vague memory of beautiful blonde curls & the smell of oranges she attributed to her mother who died early in her second pregnancy when she was only three years old.



As the years past, Aiden never remarried but had raised his daughter with very little restrictions as child. She was allowed to run barefoot, play cards with him & balance her own play ledgers at a small desk in his put in his office. His sister lamented & beleaguered him to give her over to a more feminine influence before she wasn't fit to marry & live in anything that wasn't a hunting dog's kennel. He relented & sent her to 'old widow Whitworth's circle of properly composed ladies' as it became known. She hated it every year she was there but after both of her parent's death her younger cousin, Amelia Bamber, joined the ranks after & they became the undyingly loyal to each other.



Although dead set on spinsterhood just to relive some of her old freedoms, Laurel came out & had two dismal seasons on her own. Eventually Amelia became her father's ward the summer before her debut season & they cherished the time together even more as they prepared her for balls, picnics & dinner parties.

One night Laurel was sneaking through her father's papers when there was rumor swirling among the staff that Aiden was speaking to a suitor for her hand but what she found was much worse. Her father had continued gambling for years, wading deeper into the drink & for the first time into accumulating debts. Her dowry was lost, her mother's art pawned & the sizeable inheritance left to Amelia for her own dowry had also been gambled down to nothing but her name. Burdened with the knowledge of the injustice that had been done to her sweet hearted cousin filled her with a determination to make sure she married well & with her dowry intact she thought up a plan to win the money back herself. Her father could not to be trusted to help & if the ton knew then her cousin would have prospects. She would work or fight tooth & nail to save Amelia from an impoverished fate. With the Season coming up she knew of places in London she could frequent undetected or masked to recoup her father's losses & could fish for proposals in a dozen different ballrooms before he knew what she was about. Hopefully, anyway.
