Society, Maria decides, has far too much society for such a select group of people.
It must be the thousandth soirée they have attended - they of course meaning maria and her governess-turned-mother, Eleanor. It would not be a terrible thing to be so sought after if Maria were only slightly more naïve. The sole heir to the Kendall title and fortune, assured by the last will of her dear late uncle, Charles Kendall, a young woman without need of marriage or pretences. The daughter of a recluse who married below his station. It is an old scandal to be certain, one muttered only in passing. Something easily ignored by the heiress, if only to see the bright smile on her mother's face as she embraces company.
Likely I should do the same, Maria muses, but it is not the fellow ladies of the Ton that catch her attention, but the lilting and passionate voice of a gentleman nearby, recounting tales and intrigue that lead Maria closer, slipping easily into the small but eager crowd of listeners. She waits patiently, gloved hands folded carefully over her lower stomach, and lets her quiet self be forgotten until the crowd has dispersed, leaving the stranger with her singular audience. "You weave a fine story, sir." It is improper, the thought sticks itself to her like dried bookbinding glue, but Eleanor is elsewhere, and who else could introduce them? "is it all truth, or are you prone to embellishment?"

She enjoys intellectual conversation and is naturally curious, something which can get her into a bit of trouble back home. Making friends and establishing herself socially is something that, outwardly, she appears to be good at, but due to being raised in the countryside, often stuck on the family estate due to her father's reclusive nature, Maria struggles to engage intimately in groups or singular conversations. There is a feelings of mistrust that follows her constantly, picked up from her father at a young age, that also contributes to her struggles with engaging in society.

.:Birthplace:Kent, but born and raised on the Kendall family estate further in the country.
.:Family:Thomas Kendall, father. Eleanor Kendall, stepmother.
.:Occupation:Heiress
.:History: The Kendall family are old and well-known. They have offered their services and lives to the country as far back as history can remember. It was Charles Kendall, eldest son of the family, that should have continued this long established family. But fate was cruel. Only in his mid-thirties, Charles became ill. Ever a practical man, he prepared his will and inheritance far in advance, passing it along to his younger brother, Thomas, his wife, and the baby they were soon to have, the first born, set to inherit regardless of gender. Charles never saw that tragic day, passing only two months before the birth of Maria, named after mother, both in love and in grief. The next ten years saw Maria raised in the family's ancestral home with a father that loved her at a distance and staff that never looked beyond their wages.
At eleven, Eleanor arrives, a governess long overdue, teaching Maria a variety of skills suited for a future Viscountess and, most importantly, what love is like at its most fervent and pure.
At twelve, it is Maria who cries tears of happiness when Thomas and Eleanor announce their engagement.
It is not until the age of twenty-two, her most recent birthday, that Maria is finally able to make her debut in society. She does it with Eleanor at her side - Viscount Thomas remains reclusive, though slightly less, even now -, eager to see and understand the world she will responsible for navigating with her family's name.
