i would merely BE DOING MY DUTY Phillip could not remember the last time there were so many people at his estate. Though the wedding was an intimate affair . . . Eloise had seven other siblings -- one of which was not in attendance -- a mother, in laws, and of course, children from said siblings. Therefore, there were indeed quite a few people on their wedding day. It was also the first time he was meeting her entire family. Fortunately, it was a lot smoother than his first encounter with her brothers. Shockingly as well, his own children were on their best behavior, playing with the others and keeping themselves occupied. They had returned from the Church not long ago, and enjoying the reception outdoors.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ The weather being most agreeable which was quite a relief to Phillip. For . . . everything else about this was rather, unfamiliar. His wedding to Marina was extremely different. It had been more, somber. With less people too. But here, it was as if the entire Bridgerton family had brought a sense of life to Romney Hall and Phillip hadn't quite decided his feelings of it. Though he supposed so long as Eloise was . . . content, then it should be quite alright. Content. Was that how he wished his now wife to feel? He cared for her, that much was true but . . . content seem to be quite, minimal.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He also realized that he'd barley spoken two words to her apart from the vows they had taken. Seeing her, standing there and looking breathtakingly beautiful . . . was overwhelming. This was all overwhelming he supposed, though he made no show of it. Deciding to speak to her, he politely excused himself from conversation with two of her brothers -- who he was too distracted to listen to anyway, and made his way towards Eloise. Towards his wife. He gave a nod of greeting to one of her sisters who seemed to understand and casually left their company. Phillip just, stood there, knowing that if he didn't say something soon than Eloise would surely fill the silence.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "It is fortunate that the weather is most agreeable." Phillip wished he was able to kick himself. What a ridiculously idiotic thing to say . . . first thing to say to one's wife immediately after being pronounced. He unfortunately was not gifted in the way of words, and clearly, it was showing. Though he made no attempt to remedy it and instead, just took a sip of the champagne he held in his hand to silence his tongue from spouting out any other stupid statements.

i would merely BE DOING MY DUTY The pregnancy had been different from Marina's. So, very different. As was the case when the baby was actually born. They had a beautiful baby girl whom they had named after a dear friend of Eloise's, and her sister in law as well. But was set it apart was the way Phillip saw Eloise with the baby. She was . . . a mother. Not just by birthing a child, but by the maternal way she cared for it. Phillip had truly never seen such a sight. Never having his own mother and Marina . . . she had been quite emotionally removed from the children. There were moments where she tried, but her internal struggles had been too great.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Seeing Eloise with the twins had assured Phillip that she was a good mother indeed, but witnessing it with a new born baby opened up an entirely new world. She was so involved with Penelope; so attached. So . . . nurturing. And he found himself learning from her. Wanting to be a better father in the early years of Penelope's life . . . where he had not been for Oliver and Amanda. That fear was still there, that he may fail and make mistakes . . . but it was not as crippling now. For he found strength with Eloise at his side. He'd spent the morning in the greenhouse, his time spent here becoming more out of necessity rather than avoidance. The time he was able to spend with his family was precious and he cherished every moment.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Ordinarily, he would have spent most of the day in here but instead . . . when afternoon came, he decided to check on the others. Amanda and Oliver were engaged in their lessons which he would not disrupt, so he entered the home and made his way upstairs to see what Eloise was doing. To see how Penelope was. When he entered their room, he was pleasantly surprised to see both of them, Penelope cradled in her mother's arms. Eloise truly seemed like such a natural. How fortunate he was, that she was in his life. That she was the mother to his children. That she was his wife. "Have you rested?" He asked her, making his way further into the room towards her and the baby. If she was not rested, then surely they could give Penelope to her maid.

i would merely BE DOING MY DUTY A brief flash of amusement crossed Phillip's features. The ability to smile and laugh had becoming considerably easier since marrying Eloise, since being with her. But he supposed he was a work in progress. Still learning to just . . . be among others. Without fear of saying or doing the wrong thing. The last thing he wished to do was offend anyone in the family. Ironic. Considering the first meeting he had with all the siblings. But then Simon went on to explain that he had known the Viscount from school and married his sister.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Ah. So the man had an advantage of knowing the brother before hand. Or . . . was it a disadvantage? He had seen first hand the wrath of the brothers and their overprotective nature. Phillip had quite literally been strangled by two of them for it. He could not help but let the curiosity in his mind linger as to whether The Duke had experienced similar . . . attacks.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ But he did state that they welcomed him. A comforting thought to hear from one who had once been in Phillip's position. "Was it at an advantage or disadvantage of knowing the Viscount prior to your union with his sister?" Yes. That lingering curiosity came to voice. Perhaps, being the victim of their broodish ways was something they had in common. "I can certainly understand if it was the latter," he mumbled, though fairly certain that the Duke would have heard him.

i would merely BE DOING MY DUTY "For the silence." Suddenly, Phillip did not feel as guilty. Hearing that a member of the family, one longer part of it than Phillip, even required a moment's peace. It filled him with a relief he had not even known he needed to experience. Furthermore, the Duke seemed to recognize Phillip's own need for it, without judgement. Though he must have been in a similar position too, especially when first joining the family.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "They are a lovely family," Phillip commented, not wanting to seem ungrateful for their hospitality, especially now as he was recognized for needing a moment away. "I am, merely unused to such high numbers." He would take the blame for not being able to handle it. Hell, for so long he had not even been able to handle his twin children. The man further instructed -- or encouraged -- Phillip to call him by his first name. The younger male was unsure how easy that would be, to call a man of higher rank by his Christian name. But instead of arguing the fact, Phillip just gave an ever so slight twitch of a smile as he took his hand and gave it a firm shake.

i would merely BE DOING MY DUTY This was . . . overwhelming. To say the least. Phillip was so used to the solitary, country life. The solitude of him, his children, and of course Eloise. However months after their wedding and here they were. At the Bridgerton estate in London. For the new season. Something else that he was mentally preparing himself for. Speaking of preparation, he had to talk to his children before attending, expecting them to be on their absolute best behavior.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ To be fair, they had drastically improved ever since Eloise came into their lives. It did not seem they would be chasing their current governess away . . . unlike the others before them. In addition to that, they got along quite well with the others, already playing and thrilled at the company of so many cousins. And a grandmother. Another figure in their life they had never had. Truly, it was touching to see with just how much ease the Bridgertons accepted his dear children.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ But with that said, this was all a great deal. Eight siblings, their children, spouses of the siblings -- most of them. Phillip had thought the encounter with the four brothers to be more than enough. But now, here he was, thrust into the rather chaotic household. And . . . he needed a moment. A quiet moment. Which, would not be found within the walls of the estate. So he managed to sneak out, towards the one place where he felt he could breathe: the gardens. He was already missing his greenhouse. There, he could dress down, enjoy the feeling of the dirt in his hands and not have to worry about maintaining appearances. Here in London . . . was quite the opposite indeed. But for Eloise, he would do absolutely anything.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Yet, that did not mean he was above sneaking into the garden for a moment's peace. However, he took notice of another figure who was standing by the shrubbery and could not help but wonder . . . if he was out here for the same reason. He did not really know the man, though introductions had been made. He was a Duke and husband of the eldest Bridgerton sister, Daphne. "Your Grace," he greeted with a slight lowering of his head. "What uh, brings you out here?" He could at least attempt to make conversation . . . for Eloise's sake. Besides, his curiosity also got the better of him, hoping that everyone hadn't decided to bring their little party outside to the garden.

| ~ • ~ | Character Basics | ~ • ~ |
.:Name:. Phillip Crane .:Nick Name:. Umm . . . Phil?! .:Rank:. Nobleman, heir .:Age:. 21 in season 1
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Phillip stands tall and has a bit of an athletic build. His hands are rougher than most nobleman due to his field of work. He has brown wavy hair, blue eyes, and light colored skin that is often tanned from the amount of time he spends outdoors. When in company of others, he holds the appearance of a typical nobleman, however prefers casual attire that he often dirties when working in his greenhouse for it allows him to be in comfort and ease. This has created a bit more of a gruff look to him, eventually being quite unused to being in the public eye and among the ton. He has grown accustomed to his life and thus, carries a more serious expression and demeanour. And although not many have seen it, his back is covered with scars from when his father used a whip on him when he was a child. .:Height:. 6" .:Portrayed by:. Chris Fulton
| ~ • ~ | Personality | ~ • ~ |
.:Personality:. Phillip is a man of complex nature. He is extremely honorable and filled with a sense of duty, which often dictates many of his decisions. Growing up in an abusive environment, he always believed himself to be weak and inferior, striving to be someone totally different from his father yet fearing the day he would realize he was just like him. Phillip is not a man of too many words, time often having drained the spirit he once possessed. For the same reason, he does not often smile, finding joy only in his children though faces intense insecurities that he is a terrible father and is constantly a failure in this role. He shows restraint when it comes to the indulgences of society; for instance, despite the state of marriage, he remains tied to his sense of honor and has not sought out another to be with.
He struggles to convey his emotions, and acts out more physically than having a gift in the way of words -- despite his like and interest in poetry. His temper scares even him, and for that reason, is not very good at confrontation as he would prefer to remove himself from the situation or argument. He finds peace in his work, spending most of his time at his estate in his greenhouse. He is a simple man, living a simple lifestyle and is willing to make the necessary sacrifices -- inclusive of those that counter his own happiness -- in the name of honor and duty. .:Skills:. Botany; he is extremely well versed and knowledgeable in this field (able to grow plants not in season, possess understanding of their properties and benefits, etc), he quite a good shot, skilled in boxing .:Weaknesses:. Self loathing, believes he is a terrible father, not very skilled or eloquent in the way of words, fears his own temper, isolated and unused to being around a lot of people
| ~ • ~ | History | ~ • ~ |
.:Birthplace:. Romney Hall, Gloucestershire .:Family:. Father: deceased, brother: deceased, fiancé/wife: Marina, son: Oliver, daughter: Amanda .:Occupation:. Botanist .:History:. Phillip was born as the second -- and what would be last -- son of the Crane family. His mother died in childbirth, and his father never remarried, leaving him the sole parent of both children. His father was a powerful man, using physical force to discipline both George and Phillip. Where George was the eldest, and thus, more proficient in much of what their father valued, Phillip was often on the receiving end of his father's beatings. The physical abuse left Phillip having grown up in a fearful environment, as well as constantly striving to please his father, or at the very least, gain his approval if only to avoid a beating. Eventually when reaching the appropriate age, he went to Cambridge and studied botany, developing a strong interest in the sciences. It was at the age of 21 years old that he would receive news which would change his life forever. His brother, George died at battle and after some inquiry, Phillip received word from his brother's lover: Marina. Discovering she was with child, Phillip immediately traveled to London to ask for her hand, wishing to honor his brother by taking care of Marina and ensuring she was looked after. She first rejected the proposal, but eventually accepted.
--- The next part of his history is book based and I am willing to edit this if the show's canon conflicts with anything here or if we get a Marina with whom we can plot out what came after she left with him --- As time went on, Phillip did all that he could to try and provide Marina with a life of joy and happiness. His father having also died left him as heir of the Crane estate and all that came with it. So for some time, it was just the two of them -- along with of course the household staff. However, Marina's emotional state, devastated over the loss of George and current circumstances, did not make it easy. Not even when she gave birth to twins: Amanda and Oliver. Crane hoped that this would lift her spirits however, she continued to be a recluse, seldom leaving her room, seldom talking and . . . never smiling. Phillip raised the children as best he could, yet also maintained a distance between them . . . fearful of saying or doing something that would constitute as a mistake. Due to many factors, the twins had become quite the handful, difficult to control, scaring away their governesses, and more often than not . . . quite mischievous. Phillip feels at a loss as what to do, as these conditions only perpetuate his belief in his poor skills as a father -- and husband. He eventually became more withdrawn from others, finding comfort only in his greenhouse as his feelings of insecurity, failure and fear grew, causing him to become his own worst enemy.
