Eyebrows raised, Elizabeth looked at him in surprise. To hear that he wanted to have someone he could converse with surprised her. Elizabeth had certainly pegged him as the type of man that did not care if he could get along with his wife. He seemed like the type to want to fulfill his duties and make sure she could fulfill her own. Many marriages were nothing more than contracts and obligations between two people and many people were okay with that. Elizabeth did not know what sort of family he had grown up in and if there had been love between his own parents. "No?" She asked, still surprised as he spoke about not wanting someone to sit there like a brick.
It was, perhaps, Elizabeth's biggest fear when it came to marriage. Marrying someone who only wished for her to sit there and look pretty, minding her manners and following all of the rules that were set before her. "If you are looking for a genuine connection with someone, then perhaps, you might have to look past all of those requirements. See if you can have a conversation with someone past discussing the weather and the usual topics you discuss with any other woman you have a dance with," Elizabeth suggested. It was genuine advice if he truly wanted to meet someone he could be happy with.
Elizabeth laughed. "Arguing isn't all that bad," Elizabeth said to him. "My parents had their own arguments and they loved one another deeply. Not seeing eye to eye on some things is to be expected." She shrugged, still slightly amused by his choice of words. There was no doubt that he'd caught himself at the last minute, choosing a different word than the one that came to mind. "Not every marriage will be a love match, but truth be told, it's what I seek. I want someone to care for who I am as a person and not because it is their duty."

It was a bit of a relief to see the corners of his mouth twitch into a smile. There were not many people that Elizabeth could talk freely with and she had never thought William Slade would be one of them. Then again, she was still holding back where she knew it would be truly offensive to say the things she truly thought. He was getting far more than she would ever say in public but he had not rushed out of the room from the amount of offense she might have caused so far. Elizabeth found a grin on her face at his question. She took him for an arrogant man but it wasn't an answer she would give him out loud. "Your Grace, my respect was given by accepting your apology and continuing to enjoy your company," Elizabeth pointed out, also leaning forward slightly in her seat.
Elizabeth shrugged in a nonchalant manner. "They are your own requirements," she said. "I might not agree with them but they are for you to get married to someone like that, not me." His requirements, if they were in line with the things she had mentioned, were quite shallow in her opinion. A genuine laugh left her lips when he asked if she sought a husband who remained quiet and did not speak out of turn. "What fun is that?" She asked. "If my future husband cannot speak freely in front of me and share his opinions, then what sort of relationship is that?" She tucked a strange of hair behind her ear before looking back at him. "I believe you should speak freely in front of me," Elizabeth said, in a bit of a challenge.

There was a chance that Anthony would not give in to her plea, instead deciding that his business elsewhere was far more important than saving Elizabeth from an unwanted suitor. The two of them were not particularly close but Elizabeth knew deep down that should she ever truly need him, Anthony would be there for her. It might have been because of the loyalty to the Davenport family instead of Elizabeth specifically, but she would take either one. Elizabeth watched as he glanced over her shoulder to see who she needed help from and there seemed to be a decision made then and there.
Relief washed over her as she followed Anthony back into the drawing room. She knew he could scare off Martin better than anyone and if he could not, then she would have to find another plan. Elizabeth did not see what all the fuss had been about when Anthony had scared off suitors for Daphne but she recognized the fact that Daphne had been looking for a suitor and Elizabeth was not entirely interested at the moment. The look on Martin's face was less than pleased and Elizabeth put a polite smile on her face, though she was holding back a large grin. Taking a seat in the chair that stood between the chair Martin sat in and the one Anthony would likely take, Elizabeth felt like she was about to watch a rousing game of tennis.
It seemed Anthony could do all the work on his own and did not need any assistance from Elizabeth. She made a show of raising her eyebrows in surprise when Anthony mentioned the club, even though she had known he would likely make comments about any issues that Martin might have. "Awful luck?" Elizabeth asked, putting on a sad face and looking at Martin in an attempt to offer empathy. Then Anthony made a comment about settling his debt and Elizabeth had to purse her lips to keep from laughing at the unfortunate death glare Martin was sending Anthony. Oh, it was quite delightful indeed.
"Now I do believe this is not appropriate talk in front of a lady," Martin tried to sway Anthony into stop his revelations. "My goodness, is all of this true?" Elizabeth asked, placing a hand over her heart. "Lord Egerton, I dare say this information has given me quite a lot to consider and perhaps it would be best for you to leave at this time," Elizabeth said. "My Lady, I assure you these things are not true," Martin said, trying to recover. Elizabeth raised her eyebrows. "Are you calling Lord Bridgerton a liar? For I have known him my entire life and know him to be an honest man." She challenged him for a moment. "And one without a gambling problem." Elizabeth had been unable to stop herself from adding the last bit, however rude it might have been. The smallest of smirks appeared on her features before she was able to put it to rest.

There was not an ounce of surprise on her face when he said that he had it covered. Elizabeth did not know much about Reuben Slade but she had the best feeling that he was a man that was always well prepared. He seemed to not leave anything to chance and Elizabeth could appreciate that in a person. She felt relief at him already having crafted a lie for her to work with. It was believable and she would be able to tell it to others without worrying about it coming back on her. "I can work with that," she assured him. Elizabeth might not be as quick on her toes with lies but she could certainly sell it.
Elizabeth nodded, understanding that he was trying to convey that Elizabeth would get to spend time with Evelina without his sister hovering. She wondered if it was the same sister that he had entrusted his daughter with just the other day. "Such a shame when people are tardy," Elizabeth mused. "But I'm afraid there is not much we can do about it." She said with a sigh and raised her hands in a faux-sign of giving up. A small smirk made its way onto her face at the facade. "Well, I do believe you are not actually here to try to court me, Mister Slade, but I can have Dawn fetch some tea if you would care to stay longer," she said. "I can tell you are quite fond of idle conversation," Elizabeth teased.

William was quick to refute her comment about winning her over, but she was unsure if she believed him. Only a moment ago he had made a comment about enjoying a challenge and what was Elizabeth but a challenge? The daughter of a Marquis that had yet to find a suitable match? Elizabeth pursed her lips in thought as she tried to decide if she was offended or flattered by him calling her clever. Although in the same breath, he had always referred to her as challenging. "I'm not sure that's entirely difficult," she said. The women of the Ton were not known to be the most brilliant, all often far too concerned with bagging the richest husband.
All Elizabeth wanted was for someone to show interest in her because of who she was as a person and not because she was the daughter of a Marquis or because of her societally accepted accomplishments. It was something she had yet to find, as men just wished to find a pretty wife with money to show off like an accessory. Elizabeth would rather not marry than become a woman like that.
He apologized and Elizabeth nodded her head. She accepted his apology but chuckled when he said he had not realized how he sounded. "You mean to say you do not speak just to hear the sound of your own voice?" Elizabeth teased with a grin on her face. His question of what she believed his standards were caught her attention and she leaned forward in her seat. Now this would be fun. "Well," she began, making her voice slightly more sophisticated to showcase. "It must be someone within your rank. It would not do to marry far below your station. She must be pleasing for you to look at but perhaps not aware of her beauty. Arrogance does not look good on a woman. Accomplished in all of the things she should be and someone that could run a household and mother your heirs. Of course, she must know when to keep silent and not speak out of turn, for that is not is not good either." Elizabeth shook her head in a rather serious fashion. Then she cracked and grinned, sitting back in her seat. "How did I do?"

Elizabeth let out a pleasant hum at the idea that Evelina considered her to be one of her dearest friends. It was an interesting thing to consider how the mind of a child worked. The fact that they had spent less than fifteen minutes together and Eveline still thought of Lizzie as a friend was quite intriguing. Still, it was a pleasant surprise and Elizabeth found herself not caring to think of the logistics. Had someone her own age thought these things then she might have been concerned but this was Evelina. "Well, it is an honor to be considered one of her friends," she mused with a smile on her face. She could not help but to wonder if Evelina had other friends or even knew children her own age. Given the desire to keep her a secret from society, Elizabeth supposed that was not the case. It wasn't her place to question how good it was for Evelina to socialize with other children but she still could not help but to grow concerned over it.
She was pleased to hear that her knee was alright, even if she had suspected it was fine. As she had been unable to properly clean it in the park, Elizabeth found that she hoped someone had taken care of it when Evelina returned home with her aunt. "I'm glad," she said, nodding her head. It was good to hear him confirm that Evelina was still in good health. He thanked her and Elizabeth waved her hand in the air in dismissal. "It was no trouble. I'm glad she was able to approach me for assistance instead of wandering further into the park," Elizabeth said. There was always a chance that she would find someone less agreeable or someone that might refuse to help her.
At the mention of him sending a carriage, Elizabeth raised her eyebrows in surprise. She had not expected him to be so rash with his words and quick to deem that she would come and see Evelina. Elizabeth did not want to take the gesture for granted but found herself considering the logistics of this visit. Where was she to tell her father she was going? Would he not find it odd that she had not taken their own carriage to travel somewhere? Furthermore, the rest of the house staff would surely notice a strange carriage picking Elizabeth up. "And what am I to say to everyone else as to where I am going? Forgive me, but I am not the best liar." If someone gave her a story, she could certainly sell it, but Elizabeth had never done well with making up lies on the spot. One visit, she could be fine with. The questions would not come as freely, but if Evelina wished to see her again, and Reuben allowed it, then things would start to get tricky.

It was true that Elizabeth did not know William. As far as she was concerned, she had pegged him as being like most of the other men that her father had introduced her to over the course of many balls. He was accomplished but far more interested in finding a wife because of duty than finding someone to create a life with. At least William had his own title so going after the one her father had was never an issue. "Just as you do not know me, William," she reminded him, using his first name in turn.
Her eyebrows rose in surprise when he mentioned liking a challenge. Was he saying that he saw her as a challenge and winning her over would prove that he could do it? Elizabeth was not sure if he was explaining things poorly or simply putting his foot in his mouth. "And you wish to win me over to prove what, exactly?" She asked, not entirely impressed with his words. At hearing that he would say what he thought of her, Elizabeth smirked and looked over at him as he prattled on about what he thought. "Close, but not quite," she said once he was done. "I think highly of what I deserve, because I want to marry someone that cares for me over everything else. I do not care about status or title. I care about finding someone that can hold a conversation with me," Elizabeth said. "And yes, I believed you to be like the rest of the men that cannot be bothered to get to know me past my father's title and my own accomplishments."
Elizabeth nearly rolled her eyes at him, thinking his goodbye had been respectful. "You could not be bothered to answer a simple question!" She exclaimed, a light chuckle of disbelief leaving her lips. "You came across as quite bored and wishing to be anywhere but there. Which, I assure you, did not hurt my feelings, but instead I thought of if you were like that with me, then perhaps you were like that with every other woman that does not fill whatever impossible standards you have for a wife." She shot him a look that was almost a challenge, to see if he would refute her words. Elizabeth laughed at his words, saying that she could steal his attention and protect him from the mamas. "As desirable as you make that sound, I believe I am quite content to not attend the ball tonight. Besides, I'm sure it has already started." And it would take her too long to get ready and she was most certainly not entertaining the idea of going to spend more time with William Slade.

Elizabeth nodded her head as he provided a perfectly reasonable explanation for who Evelina might be, should people start discussing it. The park had not been terribly populated at that time so it was possible the people that did see them, simply did not care to comment. Of course, that would be too good to be true but Elizabeth would not count her chickens before they hatched, so to speak. If she could do anything to assist with the rumors then she would, otherwise she had to assume that Reuben would take care of them. He seemed perfectly capable and Elizabeth would not think otherwise. "Of course," she agreed, nodding her head.
She observed as he looked over the drawing, Elizabeth admiring Benedict's piece of art once more. He was such a lovely artist. There was a tick in his jaw and she found herself a little confused by his silence. Then he let out a resounding 'no' and she let her eyebrows raise in further puzzlement. Elizabeth tried to work with the reasoning in her mind. Perhaps he did not wish for his daughter to have anything from her, not wanting her to ask about Lizzie or to go to the park again. His protective nature over his nature could surely not prevent him giving her a drawing, could it?
Suddenly feeling a tad awkward standing in front of him, Elizabeth went to take a step back but then he began to speak again. His words were difficult to comprehend at first, but eventually the meaning of them was able to resonate within her mind. He wished her to give it to Evie herself? Elizabeth felt her entire face light up with the prospect of getting to see Evelina again, believing that she would never see her after their first meeting. "Truly?" Elizabeth asked, the smile still on her face. "I would love to see her again." Nothing would make her happier and she realized that seeing and spending time with Evelina was something she truly wanted. "Is her knee quite well?" Elizabeth asked, a look of concern passing over her features. The scrape hadn't been too bad back in the park but she felt she had to at least ask about it.

William's tone changed and he leaned forward slightly, causing Elizabeth to become intrigued once more with him. She raised her eyebrows, waiting to see what he had to say. She found she was surprised, though not disappointed, at him using her first name as she had suggested the other night. She was surprised, however, when he spoke of marriage and she found herself nearly choking on absolutely nothing. He was quick to reveal his joke and she chuckled, shaking her head at him. "Who knew you had a sense of humor," she mused.
To hear that he was hoping to persuade her that he wasn't the man she thought, was quite interesting. "And what man do you believe I think you are?" She asked, a little knowing grin on her face. His mention of others wanting her attention made her nearly scoff, but she held back the unladylike action. "Plenty of men always want my attention but it is not to get to know me, but instead to gain favor with my father," she pointed out. "Surely you face the same problem with eager mamas hoping their daughter will obtain the attention of a Duke," Elizabeth said. "I am very particular about those that wish to take a place on my dance card." More often than not, Elizabeth found herself turning them down or trying to force any of the Bridgerton brothers to take up space on her card so that no one else could.
At the mention of the ball, she quirked an eyebrow. "You wish to go to the ball?" She asked. "Missing the eager mamas already?" Elizabeth jested with a grin.

From Elizabeth's observation, he did not seem too keen on taking her word at face value. Then again, she supposed she could not blame him. This was his daughter and Elizabeth knew how protective her own father was over his daughters, so could understand the same going for others. But this was a bit more serious, as people did not know about Evelina. Elizabeth searched her mind to recall if Reuben had ever been married but could not recall such details. Surely people would have talked about it had that been the case. Or perhaps it had been before Elizabeth had used the Ton gossip to maneuver her way through society.
He would not hear whispers amongst the ton, although now that she thought about it. There was a slight chance people would talk of a little girl being accompanied by a member of the Slade family. "Will people not discuss seeing her with your sister?" Elizabeth asked out loud. No doubt, the thought might have crossed his mind if he was smart enough. People might even ask Elizabeth about the girl if people had seen her with Evelina. "Is there a name you'd like me to give out if people ask me about her? Surely I cannot pretend she did not know her own name." And Elizabeth wasn't willing to give our her actual name.
The fact that he thought she would want something in return for her silence was enough to make Lizzie chuckle, but only a small amount. Licking her lips, she pursed them before glancing at Dawn and then back at Reuben. "Oh yes, I have something I require of you," she said, trying to make her voice rather serious. Elizabeth rose from her spot on the chaise and walked towards the table where she had placed her book. Inside the cover, she picked up the small picture of the butterfly Benedict had drawn. It was beautiful, colored and with Elizabeth's handwriting on it, the words 'Little Dove' written near the top. Walking over to Reuben she held the piece of paper out for him to take. "Would you give this to her?" She asked.

Her ladies maid nodded and left the room to gather some tea for the pair. The door to the drawing room remained open and even though they were unchaperoned, it was not entirely out of the ordinary for two to be given five minutes alone in times like these. While they waited for Dawn to return with the tea, Elizabeth turned her attention back towards William. "Please, sit," she said, gesturing towards one of the chairs. Elizabeth took her own seat on the chaise and thought about his next comment.
He might have been expecting for her to continue to snap at him and send him on his way, which she was certain he surely deserved after the way last night had gone. But Elizabeth found it curious that he'd gone out of his way to come here to apologize to her instead of retreating with his tail between his legs. "You came all this way to apologize," Elizabeth reminded him. "It is not something I foresaw happening and I'm intrigued as to your reasonings for doing so," Elizabeth confessed. He questioned the ball and she waved her hand in the air in dismissal. "Truthfully, I find the balls quite exhausting and do not care to attend another. I'd ask if you were going but you did not seem so inclined to answer my question when posed the other night," Elizabeth reminded him.

Very few words were spoken between the pair, but it did not bother Elizabeth. Silence was something she could deal with, depending on the person. She'd experienced many types of silences throughout her life, often awkward ones, but the one between her and Reuben in that moment did not appear awkward. It was fine and she waited patiently for Dawn to arrive. No doubt, she found find it odd that Elizabeth had requested her presence but she would soon understand why that was the case. She might even find it strange that she be included in the conversation but Elizabeth guessed that Reuben wanted to make sure all parties privy to the information regarding Evelina were present so he could assure their discretion. Elizabeth wanted to ask who Evelina belonged to but still, decided against it. If she was meant to know, then he would reveal her parentage.
Dawn's arrival was swift and the door was closed behind her. Sensing that this was not a normal gentleman calling upon Elizabeth, Dawn walked over and sat down with Elizabeth's insistence. She did not need to stand in the corner for something such as this. Looking over at Reuben once it was all sorted, she waited for him to speak and when she did, she was unable to hide the small amount of surprise on her features. Her eyebrows rose for a split second before she composed herself again. Elizabeth had considered the idea that Evelina belonged to Reuben but she had not been entirely sure. The piercing blue eyes seemed to ring true through several family members in the Slade house, but she saw the resemblance now that the truth had been spoken.
Just as Elizabeth thought, he was making sure the two of them kept this information to themselves. Elizabeth nodded her head. "I assure you, we do not plan to say anything to anyone," Elizabeth promised. "I know my word cannot mean much, but please believe me when I say I would never do anything to harm that child." It had been a small interaction between the two, but Elizabeth knew it would stick with her. "Dawn has promised the same," she said, looking over at her ladies maid who nodded her head and offered Reuben the same assurances. "Is there anything I can do to provide some relief to your worries?" Elizabeth asked. Whatever it was, she would do it.

Being called upon by Martin Wellington was one of the worst things that Elizabeth could have to endure. He was unlikeable, boring but also arrogant. He would not stop talking about all of his accomplishments and how wonderful he was. Elizabeth was quite certain she would have fallen asleep if he weren't so loud with his boasting. She thought she had made it quite clear at the last ball that she was not interested in him or having him pursue her. He must have thought she was not serious, as he could not understand how someone could not be interested in him. There was no doubt in her mind that he was after her because of her father's title and money, as most men were during the season, but he was probably one of the worst suitors she'd come across in her two seasons.
Elizabeth glanced off to the side to see if anyone would save her from this. Their chaperone stood off to the side in the room, one of the maids so Elizabeth had no hope of bringing her into the conversation to save her. But then she thought she spotted someone walking by the drawing room. Had that been Anthony Bridgerton? It was not out of the ordinary for any of the Bridgerton family members to appear at the Davenport Estate without plan to do so, just as the Davenport family often appeared at the Bridgerton house. Elizabeth was the one that probably spent the most time at the Bridgerton house but that did not matter. The two families were incredibly close and it was because of that, that Elizabeth was struck with an idea. "Excuse me," she said quickly, getting up from her seat rather quickly and rushing towards the open door to the drawing room.
"Anthony!" She called out. Elizabeth shot him a look that told him that she required his attention now, no matter the reason for his visit to their house. "Help me," she said with her voice low so that Martin might not hear in the other room. "Please," she felt like she would beg if he so desired. If Elizabeth knew less than wonderful things about Martin then she was certain that Anthony might know even worse things. Elizabeth had to hope that he would enjoy the idea of scaring off a suitor, whether or not it was for his sister.

The mystery of Evelina Slade occupied much of Elizabeth's mind throughout the walk home and the entire evening. Who was she and how did no one know about her? Normally, circumstances such as these would cause Elizabeth to use her resources. She would ask her trusted friends or ask Dawn to do some digging amongst the other maids. But Elizabeth was smart enough to know that she was a secret for a reason and Elizabeth would never do anything to harm Evie or anyone connected to her. So instead, Elizabeth had been forced to wallow in her irritation at not knowing anything and not being able to figure anything out. Unless she happened to see the little girl again, which she very much doubted, Elizabeth would never know.
The conversation between Elizabeth and Dawn had been brief, but the understanding between the two to keep it to themselves had been conveyed. Dawn was not one to spread her own gossip, but instead was someone that listened to everything when possible. Elizabeth trusted her more than most people so she felt quite satisfied that Dawn would not say anything to anyone, not even the other members of the household. She'd spent the next morning at the Bridgerton house, hoping that time with Benedict and the others would provide a distraction worth having. There, Elizabeth had asked Benedict to draw her a picture of a monarch butterfly and while he had complied, she had provided no details other than her desire to have the picture.
Several hours later, Elizabeth returned home and grabbed one of her favorite novels before disappearing into the music study. It was where she often curled up with a book or could be found playing music for hours on end. It came as a complete surprise to her when someone came into announce that she had a gentleman caller. It certainly was not expected and she loathed the idea of having to make polite conversation for the next hour or two. Perhaps she would be able to find a way to get rid of them quickly, if she could only convince Emily to interrupt them if too much time passed.
Walking into the drawing room, Elizabeth was surprised to see none other than Reuben Slade. The two had a pleasant conversation at the Davenport ball but she never thought he was interested in her in that way. Then the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. He was a Slade and so was Evelina. Perhaps this was about her. Elizabeth dipped into a curtsy before placing her book onto a small table. "Lord Slade, it's wonderful to see you again," she greeted him. Glancing at the chaperone near the door, Elizabeth called out to him. "Kenneth, would you please get Dawn to chaperone? Thank you. You may leave the door open, we shall be fine for a few minutes."
Looking back at Reuben, Elizabeth went to take a seat on the chaise that she tended to favor. "Am I to believe you are here because you could not get enough of our conversation from the other night," Elizabeth teased softly. "I assure you, I have not breathed a word of her to anyone." Elizabeth nodded towards the open door where their butler, Kenneth, had been standing a moment ago. "He tends to repeat everything to my father." An explanation as to why she had requested Dawn, when usually she held no preference for a chaperone.

Elizabeth smiled kindly at Evie. "Of course you are still a dove," she cooed. She reached up and wiped her thumb across Evie's cheek, wiping away the tears. "You are the only little dove I shall ever have the pleasure of knowing," Elizabeth assured her. She reached out and tapped a finger to the little girl's nose before handing the cloth back to Dawn and picked her up. "Thank you for being so brave," she mused as the girl snuggled into her. Elizabeth enjoyed the feeling of Evie in her arms, and she found herself suddenly missing the idea of being a mother herself. This should have proved she was good at these sorts of things, but that still didn't mean she would make a good mother. There was much more to motherhood than helping someone find their way and cleaning small wounds after a fall. "You shall fly again, little dove," Elizabeth promised her. "Right now you just need to rest." And perhaps take a nap once the whole adventure was over.
Thankful that the woman in distress was indeed her Aunt, Elizabeth set the little girl down so she could run to her family member. The woman was not someone Elizabeth recognized but she did recognize the last name when the Aunt chastised Evelina using her full name. Slade. Elizabeth had met a Reuben Slade at her family's event not too long ago and she had also met his older brother, William. It did surprise her that such a wonderful little girl could come from someone she had such a hard time reading and someone she found slightly irritable. But to her knowledge, neither of them had a daughter.
"Oh, of course," Elizabeth assured her, again, finding it odd that she wanted to keep it quiet. Elizabeth would keep her word but was rather curious as to which member of the Slade family she belonged to. The two began to walk away before Elizabeth could say anything else and she sighed. Dawn came up beside her, asking if Elizabeth wished to remain in the park. Before she could answer, she felt two little arms around her legs in a hug. She smiled and leaned down to give her a small hug in return. "You're quite welcome little dove," she said with a grin. "Now run along, you don't want to keep your aunty waiting." She stood up and watched the two disappear before turning and heading home herself. A particularly odd interaction, but not unwelcome.
