Elizabeth raised her hand so it was slightly above her head. "This high?" She asked, her face still showing one confusion, as if she did not understand just how tall Evie's house was or how high she thought she could fly. "Taller?" She asked, exasperated by Evie's words. "Well that is just the tallest I can think of!" She exclaimed. Elizabeth placed a hand over her heart to show that Evie's words were quite sweet. "Well, thank you for not leaving my behind little dove." The two continued to walk and Lizzie looked behind her to see if Dawn had any luck, but the woman simply shook her head and shrugged her shoulders. No one had caught either of their eyes looking for this little girl. No matter, Elizabeth would not leave her until they found her Aunty.
"Plum cake is quite delicious!" She said through laughter. "I think chocolate cake is my favorite." It wasn't something they had often but Lizzie had quite the sweet tooth. Fortunately, they were able to indulge in such a sweet thing from time to time. It did surprise her to hear that this was her first time in the park. Surely that couldn't be right? Hearing that Evie had never been to the park before would have placed a frown on her face if she weren't having such a wonderful time with her.
Evie slipped from her fingers and ran off. "Be careful!" She called after her, picking up her skirt to run off after her so she did not get too far. Lizzie already knew this girl had a penchant for running off and getting lost and she did not want her to get out of her sigh. Then she fell and Elizabeth rushed over to her, quickly kneeling down on the ground. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out her hanker-chief and went to wipe the blood but paused. "Well Evie, you've told me that you are quite sweet and clever. I bet you're brave too, right?" She asked. "Can you be brave for me right now? I will try to make sure it does not hurt but I need to wipe away the blood." Elizabeth tenderly reached out and dabbed at Evie's knee, making sure to be gentle and her eyes looked up at the little girl. "Very good, little dove. Now, shall we find your Aunty?" Elizabeth stood up and then leaned down, collecting Evie in her arms and holding her as she continued to walk.
Dawn caught her attention and pointed up ahead where a woman seemed to be distraught and looking around. Elizabeth adjusted Evie in her arms and leaned towards the little girl. "Is that your Aunty?" She whispered, pointing up ahead to where she saw a woman.

"How tall do you think?" Lizzie mused. "This high?" She held her hand out to her shoulders a puzzled expression on her face. The imagination of a child was something that would always bring a smile to Elizabeth's face. It seemed that Evie was in no short supply when it came to that and it made her glad. She knew there were houses and families out there that only bred their children for society and did not care about the love and care that went into raising them. She was utterly curious about which family Evie belonged to but was unsure if she would know her last name or even the names of her parents.
The sound of Evie laughing out of pure joy when Elizabeth lifted her off the ground to give her a glimpse of what it might be like to fly made her own cheeks hurt from the large smile on her face. Hearing her say that she wished to help Lizzie fly only made her laugh more. "Oh, it's quite alright. I think you can fly and just tell me all about it. I'm sure you'd be quite good at it," she explained. "We are doves!" She agreed, nodding her head in confirmation.
With their hands still connected, she watched as Evie outstretched one hand and tried to hurry her along so they could fly. Elizabeth should have been concerned with other people staring but right now, she was in Evie's world; a world where nothing else mattered but trying to fly. Laughing along with the little girl, Elizabeth outstretched her other arm and walked quicker to keep up with her. "Only if you help me fly!" She said.
To hear Evie's thoughts on the butterfly was something else entirely. Elizabeth wasn't sure where her thoughts were going but it was interesting to try and follow them. She felt her heart melt at her belief that they were meant to be friends. "You are the sweetest, did you know that?" Lizzie pointed out with a grin. "Yes, we are definitely friends. We shall have to make sure we see one another again. Perhaps next time you come to the park, but try not to leave your Aunty," she said lightly.

"Evie it is then!" She said with a grin. Elizabeth found herself laughing at the mention of their names sounding similar. "They do, that is a wonderful observation," she pointed out. Evie continued to amuse Elizabeth and sometimes she reminded her of herself as a child, or even Emily. Wide eyed and ready to talk to anyone that would listen. "You could even fly over your own house!" Elizabeth exclaimed with a smile. As they neared the path, Elizabeth placed herself behind Evie and reached down for her other hand. "Here, I believe if you try very hard you can fly to that path right there!" She said, taking both Evie's hands and lifting her a few inches off the ground, taking a few steps before placing her on the path. She laughed and let go of one of her hands, putting herself next to the little girl once more.
At the question of birds getting lost, Elizabeth tilted her head to the side in thought. What sort of answer could she give here? She did not truly know much about birds but Evie did not need to know that. "I think they always manage to find their way home," she explained after a moment of thought. She laughed at the mention of Evie being called a Princess by her family, thinking fondly on her own memories of her father and mother calling her a princess as well. "Thank you!" She said in gratitude to her compliment. She found that children often told the truth when it came to matters such as that. "Oh yes, we can both be doves. We can fly over the entire Ton and travel wherever we like!"
It was good to know that Evie had been in the park, so hopefully it would not be long until someone noticed they were missing an adorable little girl. Elizabeth listened in silence as Evie described the butterfly she had seen and Elizabeth smiled. "That is a Monarch butterfly, I believe!" She explained. "Which, Monarch is another word for Queen or King so I believe it's a sign that you really are a Princess," Elizabeth said with a grin. She gave Evie her attention while also keeping her eyes peeled for anyone that might be distraught over the lost child. Hopefully they would happen upon them shortly.

Elizabeth was unable to help the smile that appeared on her face as she watched the little girl teeter back and forth with what her name was and what Elizabeth could call her. It appeared her name was Evelina but she had several nicknames and Elizabeth could appreciate that. "Well, what is your favorite thing to be called? You know, what you prefer is quite important," Elizabeth pointed out with a smile. She thought back to her own childhood and how she had insisted that some people call her Elizabeth while others had the privilege to call her Lizzie. Even now, the people she allowed to call her Lizzie were quite few.
She was unable to help the own laugh that escaped her lips at the insistence that she was not a dove. "I know you are not a dove. But wouldn't it be marvelous if you could fly like one?" She asked. "And I believe you to be quite beautiful like a dove." Elizabeth smiled at the little girl, finding her to be quite wonderful for such a small child. She was polite but radiating energy that made Elizabeth want to do nothing but smile and spend time with her. She was quite certain that the parents of this little girl were quite wonderful and she found herself more curious as to which family she belonged to.
"Oh, you are quite right! My, you are smart," Elizabeth mused. She looked over to see her ladies maid walking towards them. Perfect timing, Elizabeth thought to herself. "Evelina, this is my ladies maid, Dawn. Dawn, we are going to help Evelina find her Aunty." Dawn nodded and trailed behind the two girls as they began to walk towards the direction of the path Elizabeth assumed Evelina had originated from. "Were you in the park with your Aunty already?" Elizabeth asked.

His formal greeting was to be expected and Elizabeth waited to see if he would skip around with pleasantries before getting to why he was there. Elizabeth was under the impression he had made it perfectly clear he held no interest in her and while she thought it was fine with it, she found that she had not been able to dismiss the interaction from her thoughts last night.
He appeared to stumble over his words for a moment but Elizabeth remained patient. Her curiosity over what he had to say far outweighing her usual impatience when it came to people she did not wish to see. Elizabeth found herself further surprised when he apologized for the previous evening. She had not told anyone about her interaction with William. Not her sister, nor her dearest friend Benedict. She had kept the interaction to herself, though she had suspected she would tell one of them about it sooner or later to voice her frustration with William Slade.
The rose was revealed from behind his back and Elizabeth found herself melt a little at the beautiful gesture. Men had brought her flowers many times in an attempt to win her favor but this felt different. This rose was more than just a facade; it was an apology that she felt was actually earnest. Elizabeth reached out and accepted the rose, bringing it towards her face to smell it. "I accept your apology," she said after a moment of thought. "And thank you. It is quite beautiful."
Glancing towards Dawn, Elizabeth turned her attention back towards the Duke. "Would you care to stay for some tea?" She asked.

Claiming that she was quite tired from the night before, Elizabeth's father had allowed her to stay home and not attend the Wellington ball that evening. She needed a break from all the socializing and the fake smiles. Two balls in two nights was a lot but it wasn't something Elizabeth hadn't done before. Still, her father could tell that she wasn't in the best of moods and had allowed her to forgo the event. Elizabeth planned to spend the evening reading her novel and being left alone. Unfortunately, it seemed there were other plans in store for her.
Surprise washed over her features when her ladies maid fetched her from the music study. To hear that it was William Slade visiting caused even more surprise. Why on Earth would he be visiting her? She had thought it was quite clear the two had no interest in one another and after the lashing she had given him, she did not expect to converse with him again. Sighing, Elizabeth placed her book down and walked to the drawing room with her ladies maid, Dawn, trailing behind her.
Walking into the room, Elizabeth offered him a polite smile. "Your Grace," she greeted, dipping into a customary curtsy. "To what do I owe the pleasure of a visit?" She asked. Elizabeth did not understand one bit why he was here.

There was nothing quite like spending a day in the park reading a book. The weather was lovely and Elizabeth had decided that some fresh air would do just nicely. With her ladies maid, Dawn, speaking with another friend not too far away, Elizabeth was able to focus on her book. She found herself re-reading a work by Elias Knight, one of her favorite authors currently. His words were so eloquent that she was able to get lost quite easily. So lost, that she did not even hear someone approach her. Elizabeth found she was quite displeased with the idea of a gentleman trying to approach her to promenade in the park but she put on a polite smile nevertheless.
When there was no one there when she looked up, Elizabeth grew quite confused. Then a small voice made her look down and Elizabeth's polite smile grew into a genuine one. "Oh, hello!" She greeted. Setting her book aside, Elizabeth looked around but did not see anyone that appeared to be missing a child. Getting up from her spot on the bench, Elizabeth leaned down to get more eye level with the little girl. "Well, I shall help you find her," Elizabeth assured her.
"What's your name?" She asked. "I'm Elizabeth, but you may call me Lizzie." The child couldn't be more than five years of age and Elizabeth found herself worried. How had she gotten this far with no one noticing? She glanced up again before standing to her full height, offering her hand to the child. "Shall we find your Aunt, little Dove?"

She found it rather odd that he was trying to persuade Elizabeth to speak to another gentleman. The one he picked out was fitting enough in status but Elizabeth had spoken to him before and found him to be quite unbearable. He had been arrogant and full of himself, believing him to be the true diamond of the first water in all his glory. Elizabeth had barely made it through one conversation with him before she had tried to escape his clutches. Still, it did not sit well with her that William was so easily trying to pass her off. They had barely spoken to one another and he had already deemed her unfit? Elizabeth found herself quite offended, although she knew she did not have the right to be. She too, wrote people off quite quickly at these events, especially men that were trying to gain her favor for a possible marriage proposal in the future.
He seemed highly uncomfortable by the idea of calling her Elizabeth and she supposed she was able to figure out what sort of person he was. He was not someone she could let her guard down around and he was not someone she could have an intelligent and fun conversation with. Even his insistence of her calling him William seemed forced and uncomfortable, but she offered him a polite smile and nodded her head nevertheless. It would all be over soon enough and she would not have to speak to him again.
The dance ended and Elizabeth expected pleasantries to be exchanged but certainly not the words he spoke. He was, in a polite way, attempting to show his disinterest. Elizabeth had never felt so offended before! Quite frankly, it had never happened to her and she did not care for it one bit. Elizabeth had never been an arrogant person but the way he spoke to her, his dismissal, she found incredibly off-putting. He began to walk away but Elizabeth found herself walking after him, not in an obvious manner that might make it seem she was following him. Instead, she kept her distance until she could find him from the prying eyes and ears of others.
"Forgive me, Your Grace," Elizabeth said with a fake smile plastered across her face. "But perhaps the next time you care to be so casually cruel to avoid further conversation with someone you do not wish to speak to, you remember that kindness costs you nothing. These women you dance with have the highest of hopes to find someone and yet you seem to toss them aside like they are an accessory that does not match." It was no wonder the Duke was still unmarried. "Now, I do wish you have a pleasant evening and that you are able to find someone that is able to enjoy conversations about the weather and magic," she said, the smile on her face obviously fake. With her small rant done, Elizabeth turned to leave him.

Elizabeth found she was quite surprised at the jest William made. Whether it was an attempt to break the tension between them or it was his personality, she was unsure. If she had to guess, she would not believe him to be someone with a personality that made jokes. He seemed utterly serious and truthfully, boring. He was not someone Elizabeth could foresee a future with and that was quite fine by her. It made no difference to her that he was a Duke. Elizabeth was not looking for someone to marry solely for their title. There were plenty of girls around that would grab William for his title but she was not one of them. "Well I would thank you greatly for the escape," she mused in return with a small laugh.
She took the proper stance before the two began to dance, with one arm on his shoulder and the other in his own hand. They moved with grace, as was to be expected of two highly ranking individuals. There would be no floundering or stumbling on either of their part and at least Elizabeth did not have to worry about him stepping on her feet. She hummed in agreement when he said that he believed her father meant well. He did, and she knew it, but it did not help how she felt about him shoving her towards someone she knew she would not likely care for.
His question was one she received time and time again. Her opinion on the ball, because that's all she could have a true opinion about, right? Offering him a polite smile she nodded her head. "It is lovely," she said. "But please, just Elizabeth is fine." She wasn't sure if he would accept her insistence at being called Elizabeth but it was worth trying. "Are you to attend the ball tomorrow evening at the Wellington's?" She asked.

2. My muse is emotionally compromised and breaking down
It wasn't always like this. Some years Elizabeth was quite fine with the day but others, she found herself quite a mess. It made no sense and one should not waste time trying to figure it out, but this was one of the years where Elizabeth found herself quite inconsolable. It never got easier, no matter how many years passed. Sometimes Elizabeth just got better at hiding it. But this year she felt particularly sensitive about the day and found she was unable to stop the tears.
The room with the piano she so enjoyed playing had been home to her presence for several hours at this point. Elizabeth had tried putting her focus on playing music, knowing it always helped her mood in other situations but it did not appear to do the trick. The tears would not stop falling and all it did was frustrate Elizabeth even more. The only thing that made her feel a little better was knowing Anthony would not have to see her like this. Knowing he was on a business trip, set to return tomorrow, meant Elizabeth did not have to worry about worrying him.
The house staff knew she wanted to be left alone for the day but that did not mean they would entirely listen to her. She was quite sure she heard someone stop outside the doors several times to see if they could still hear the sound of Elizabeth sobbing. She'd found herself curled up on a cushion on a window seat as she looked out at the scene outside. It was a beautiful distraction that did not provide enough of what she had hoped it would do. All Elizabeth wanted was to stop feeling sad but she felt the feeling would never leave her body. Logically, she knew it wasn't the case. Tomorrow she would wake up feeling fine but until that moment came, she was stuck feeling this way. The sadness for the loss of her mother was going to eat her alive and she did not think anyone could make her feel better.

She was quite glad that her new friend had taken her words in stride and not taken offense to them. There was really no telling how people would take anything Elizabeth said when she was speaking more freely. Most of the time, she kept these types of conversations to people she trusted the most but in that moment, she had been unable to help herself from telling Philipa her own thoughts. It was important that she know that she must believe in herself first and foremost. "You are quite welcome," Elizabeth said with a smile. She let out a small sigh and nodded her head in agreement. "Yes, it appears to society, that is where our worth lies." It was unfortunate and not fair, but there was nothing either lady could do about it.
Elizabeth leaned in closer to hear who Philipa might have her eye on. She was surprised to learn that she fancied Anthony and tried to think about what she wanted to say before she just blurt something out. To Elizabeth, she could see the appeal of Anthony but knew that he was not someone she could ever seriously consider for herself. She found him to be far too serious and their families were far too close. "Because he's handsome?" Elizabeth asked, a smile on her face. "I can't imagine it's because he makes you laugh," she teased. "I find him awfully serious most of the time."

Elizabeth dipped into her own polite curtsy as the Duke bowed out of respect. She was less than thrilled when his mother agreed that it was a wonderful idea. Elizabeth had no idea what these two were playing at but she was not fond of it. She was quite sure William was pleasant enough but Elizabeth's father knew just how incredibly picky she was when it came to finding a true match. She did not see the point in galavanting around with the Duke if she did not see him as a possibility. She knew her father would point out that they did not know one another and therefore, could not decide on such a thing with so little information. It was all quite frustrating but Elizabeth kept a pleasant smile on her face the entire time.
He was polite enough, she would give him that much. This was not the first time her father had suggested such a thing, only for the gentleman to try to pull Elizabeth away in that very moment. "Of course," she agreed with a smile. Holding out her wrist, her dance card dangled from a tie and a small pencil accompanied it. As it was the start of the evening, her dance card was quite empty and Elizabeth usually preferred to keep it that way. A Bridgerton's name could usually be found on her card at every occasion, but only because she often forced Benedict to suffer with her.
The current song began to die down and Charles smiled at his present company. "Well, would you look at that impeccable timing. We shall leave you two for the next dance then," he said. Elizabeth kept her smile screwed into place but all she wanted to do was glare at her father. Elizabeth slipped her arm around William's and the two walked onto the dance floor for the next dance. "I am terribly sorry about him," Elizabeth apologized, her voice low for only William to hear. "He is not usually that . . . enthusiastic." There were many other words to use but Elizabeth was also attempting to test the waters with how freely she could speak in front of William.

Her eyebrows shot upwards. Had the Viscount just made a joke? Elizabeth was unable to help the small laugh that escaped her lips before doing her best to quiet herself. Putting on a serious face to match his, Elizabeth sighed. "Well, you are entirely out of uniform. I do believe the dress would not fit your stature," she commented before a small smile broke out on her face again. Anthony agreed to assist her and Elizabeth easily handed the necklace over to him before turning around so he could easily clasp it around her neck. Hopefully he would have no trouble with the task but it would not be disastrous if he was unable to help her.
Another light joke from Anthony had Elizabeth not quite sure what to make of it. Of course, the two had pleasant conversations with one another prior to this point. There had been light jokes and teasing but this felt different. Elizabeth felt like she was seeing another side to Anthony and wondered if it was all due to the successful engagement between the pair. Perhaps he felt relieved to get something such as this off his mind, but Elizabeth did not want to think about that. Because when she did, she was hit with the flurry of insecurities that Anthony had entered this arrangement because of duty and not because he was overly fond of Elizabeth. Bringing herself back to the present with Anthony, Elizabeth smiled, even if he could not see it. "Well, we must make sure you are good for something," Elizabeth said in return. "These are the moments you have been trained for, after all."
Elizabeth suddenly became aware of just how close Anthony was to her. They had been close before, walking arm in arm during their many walks in the gardens, but this was different. They were unchaperoned and it felt quite more intimate than anything Lizzie had experienced before. She wasn't sure if she was imagining it or not, but she felt his hot breath on her neck as he attempted to clasp the necklace and she found herself biting the inside of her cheek in anticipation. Anticipation to what, she was quite unsure. Elizabeth felt his fingers stop moving and she kept utterly still herself. The air felt different and Elizabeth didn't know what was going on. "Anthony?" She asked, her voice quiet, afraid to break whatever trance had transpired between the pair.

Another day and another ball. Elizabeth should have been used to them by now but found it was not something she could could not grow accustomed to. Elizabeth felt she was quite content to take her time and find a husband she could stand to spend the rest of her life with, but knew it was not how society worked. Eventually, she would have to marry. As the eldest daughter of a Marquis, it was her duty and knew it would look good for her family. Her father had been more than patient and understanding when it came to Elizabeth finding a suitable match. Elizabeth knew it was because he wanted her to be happy and have a good life with a good man, but it seemed those were so hard to find these days. Elizabeth didn't care about money or title, but instead desired the person to be someone she could care about and someone that would care about her.
Elizabeth walked through the party with her arm looped through her father's. It had never been said between the pair, but Elizabeth knew her father didn't care for these events either. He would much rather be doing something else but Lizzie knew her father took his duties as a Marquis seriously. The pair continued to walk and she felt her father pull her towards someone else, telling her he wanted to introduce her to a few people. How was it possible that after two seasons, Elizabeth was still meeting new people?
"Ah, hello. So nice to see you," Charles said to the pair. Elizabeth plastered a pleasant smile on her face as she waited for the formal pleasantries to pass. "Allow me to introduce my daughter, Elizabeth. Elizabeth, this is the Duke of Wellington, William Slade and his mother," he introduced them. Elizabeth nodded her head with her smile. "Very nice to meet you both," she said. Elizabeth knew the last name Slade and remembered she'd met Reuben at an event at the Davenport Estate. But she'd not met his older brother, William, yet. "Perhaps the two of you could have the next dance," Charles suggested. Elizabeth wanted to step on her father's foot. He was never this pushy before.

Elizabeth was not quite sure if she ever thought she would see the day where she was engaged and not entirely upset about it. Yes, she had been engaged before but deep down she had known she would never actually go through with it. The war had taken care of the whole thing before she had been forced to deal with the consequences of that decision. Even now, it was one of her deepest secrets and things she felt the most guilty about. It wasn't even something she had spoken to Benedict about and she wasn't sure she ever would. Surely it was something she would never share with Anthony either, even if he was to be her husband.
The Davenport and Bridgerton families were having a dinner in celebration of the engagement. Everyone had been thrilled with the news, although they knew it had been coming after Charles had given Anthony his permission to court Elizabeth. It was still surreal to think that she would be a Bridgerton before the year was over. She supposed things wouldn't change too much, as the families had been incredibly close even before this. Her life would change a little, with duties whatever was expected of her, but in the important ways it would stay the same.
Elizabeth finished getting ready for the dinner, her ladies maid leaving to assist Emily, leaving Elizabeth's door open as she did a few finishing touches. Picking up her necklace from her vanity, Elizabeth put it around her neck and her fingers attempted to do the clasp. She struggled with it for several moments before putting it down, huffing in annoyance. It was no problem, just something her ladies maid would have to assist her with when she was finished with Emily.
The sight of someone walking through the hall caught her attention and Elizabeth found herself grabbing the necklace and rushing towards the open door to catch them, hoping it was her maid to assist with the necklace. But she found it was Anthony and a flash of surprise crossed her face before she offered him a smile. "Oh, Anthony. Terribly sorry, I thought you were Dawn." She glanced down the hall to see if she was still in Emily's room but found nothing to tell her otherwise. "Actually, if you have a spare moment, perhaps you could assist me? I cannot seem to get the clasp on this necklace." Elizabeth glanced down at the necklace in her hand before looking back to Anthony.
