Her eyes scanned the words on the page in front of her, but her mind was hardly processing the meanings of the words. It was one of those vicious cycles where Elizabeth would re-read a page over and over again because she wasn't paying attention. Most times, a book was a welcome escape from her current endeavors but it seemed her mind was not along for the adventure this morning. Even though it was understandable that Elizabeth might have a lot on her mind, it didn't frustrate her any less as she tried to enjoy one of her favorite novels.
It had been weeks since Anthony had first brought up the idea of marriage between the two. Weeks spent getting to know one another while dodging snide looks from Bridgerton and Davenport siblings alike. There had been good moments between the pair but there had also been moments of disagreement. Elizabeth's strong personality often got the best of her but she had kept to her word to Anthony on that first day, promising to not play games and to always tell him the truth of how she felt about something. But sometimes, even Elizabeth didn't know how she felt. She did enjoy spending time with Anthony but did he enjoy spending time with her? Elizabeth had always been proud of her ability to read people but for some reason, she often felt she could not read the Viscount.
Most everyone else was off doing something on their own, and Elizabeth was in the drawing room at Aubrey Hall. She should be outside enjoying the lovely weather but instead was fighting with her thoughts and attempting to read a book. Perhaps she would see if Anthony wished to take a walk. She was fairly certain he had disappeared into his study but could not be certain. Placing her book down, Elizabeth went in search of Anthony in his study, knowing her way around Aubrey Hall all too well.
Too lost in her own thoughts, Elizabeth completely forgot to knock on the door, a courtesy she offered everyone behind a shut door. Opening the door to Anthony's study, she offered him a smile. "Shall we - " She stopped talking and tilted her head to the side at the scene in front of her. Had he been talking to himself in the mirror? What an odd thing to do, although she was sure she had done it several times throughout her life. "Were you talking to yourself?" She asked, a slight tease in her voice.

When in doubt, Elizabeth could always count on Benedict to put her in a decent mood. Whether they would simply sit in one another's company or joke around with one another, Elizabeth could not think of a time where he had not been comforting. She had no reason in this particular moment to be in a sour mood but she found that she was. Fortunately for her, it was hardly considered improper or rude to show up at the Bridgerton house looking for Benedict, or any Bridgerton for that matter. It was just another reason that Elizabeth was so thankful for growing up so close to the family. Someone was always there if she needed it. Of course, that wasn't to say her own family was bad but sometimes she couldn't find what she needed amongst them.
Although an unplanned visit, Elizabeth found herself waiting in the drawing room for what felt like ages. She was certain that someone said they would find Benedict for her to tell him that she was there, but at this rate, she believed there must have been a miscommunication. Finding Benedict shouldn't be too hard, as there were only so many places he could be. After huffing in annoyance, Elizabeth retreated from the drawing room in search of her dearest friend.
She searched the places he liked to paint the most, but was unable to find him there. Elizabeth walked down the hall towards his bedroom, noting the closed door but not paying much attention to it. Perhaps he was inside painting and just wished for some privacy. In any case, Elizabeth grabbed the handle and opened the door. "Benedict did no one tell you -" She stopped talking and her eyebrows flew up at what she saw. Some sort of noise left her lips, mixed between a squeal and a laugh, before she backed out and slammed the door behind her.
Elizabeth took a step and leaned against the wall outside of Benedict's room. What had he been doing? Elizabeth felt her face flush in embarrassment, knowing that it was certainly something she had not been meant to see. A soft giggle escaped her lips and she immediately covered her mouth with her hand. It must be an automatic reaction when she was uncomfortable or did not know how to react. Oh, she knew Benedict would be so cross with her if he ever decided to come out of his room.

Elizabeth absolutely despised the heat and everything about it. All it did was make her uncomfortable and she was seldom ever able to find some relief from it. If she was in the country then she could usually be found lounging around the lake near their estate but whilst in the city, there was nothing she could do. More often than not, all she would do was complain about the heat and about how horrible it was. Lizzie found herself unable to move or gain any type of motivation to do anything and her father had often told her that she was completely childish whenever the heat struck its highest point.
Even as a young woman, Elizabeth found herself unable to break her habit of complaining about the heat. Why did it have to be so . . . hot? Somehow she had managed to gather her thoughts and wonder where Jeremy was. It had been several hours since she had seen him. Had he told her he was off to do something and she had simply failed to commit the memory to her mind? No, surely she would remember if he had said he was going somewhere. Even though it absolutely pained her to move around, she decided that looking for him was a wise use of her time.
Lifting her hair off the nape of her neck, Elizabeth walked through the hallway, glancing into rooms with open doors to see if she could spot him. Most doors that were closed remained as such, given that she could not be bothered to open the door. But one door, their bedroom door, was closed and Elizabeth frowned. It was usually left open which made her believe that her husband could be found there. Reaching for the handle, Elizabeth opened it. The sight before her was not one she expected one bit.
Lying naked with a fan pointed directly at him, was Jeremy. Elizabeth was unable to stop the small fit of laughter that escaped her lips. "What on Earth are you doing?" she asked with a giggle. Closing the door behind her, so as to not share this image with anyone else, Elizabeth returned her gaze to him.

His hands left a trail of fire, burning through her clothes and skin as his arms wrapped around her waist. Elizabeth could not even be bothered with how improper this might be were someone to walk in on them. She cared about nothing else in that moment. It was all about Jeremy and how she so desperately ached to be close to him. Her mind couldn't even stand to process what was happening to her and how something definitely wasn't right. Instead, all she could think about was Jeremy and being with him.
Elizabeth felt a smile spread across her face at his words. "That's quite good to know," she said. "You shall have to get used to it." Now that they were engaged, Elizabeth knew that they had a lifetime filled with moments like these. Truthfully, she never thought she would find affection like this appealing but with Jeremy, she couldn't help it. She didn't know how he felt about it and found herself curious. Did it bother him or make him uncomfortable? Surely he would have said something if that were the case.
Leaning into his hand against her cheek, Elizabeth closed her eyes for a moment. It felt so good and soothing to have him touch her like that. It took her a moment to realize he'd asked a question and she opened her eyes to look at him. "I'm fine," she assured him. "I just . . . need you." She didn't know how else to say it. "It's like my entire being is on fire for you." She felt like she was reciting some of his poetry.

She could not help the chuckle that escaped her lips at her sister's comment about wanting to disappear. Elizabeth knew that feeling all too well and would guess that it was all due to people fussing over her for her first season. More specifically, Helen. Elizabeth thought that the woman would be far too busy being a mother to her own daughter, Hannah, but instead had decided to focus all of her attention on Emily and Elizabeth. "Helen again?" She guessed. Elizabeth had only narrowly avoided Helen earlier, knowing she would want to talk about dresses and the suitors she believed Elizabeth should pursue with the upcoming season. Nothing Helen said would ever resonate with Elizabeth and she just wished the woman would realize it by now. There was nothing she could say or do to make her thrilled to discuss her season with her.
Elizabeth shrugged, glancing around the room she had committed to memory years ago. If she admitted to looking for Emily then her sister would assume something was wrong. It wasn't what she wanted and instead had wanted to talk to her about her season in a more natural way. She also understood that it was likely Emily was tired of talking of her season, probably ruined by Helen. "Can't I wish to spend time with my favorite sister?" She asked, raising an eyebrow at Emily.
Rolling her eyes, she chuckled and shook her head. "Nothing is wrong," she assured her. Elizabeth scoffed at Emily's comment, not taking it seriously but instead in sisterly fun. "I believe you are the one with the worry lines," Elizabeth pointed out, reaching over and pressing her fingers against Emily's brow. Chuckling, Emily walked to sit down on one of the chairs in the library. Falling in a quite unladylike fashion onto the seat, Elizabeth played with the fabric on her dress. "I suppose I just wanted to spend some time with you."
It wasn't a lie; Elizabeth always enjoyed spending time with Emily. They were the closest out of the Davenport children and the two that got along the best. "And," she began, "I wanted to see if you had any questions about your season. You know, questions you would not be able to ask anyone else." She glanced up at Emily to see what sort of reaction she might have. Elizabeth did not wish to ruin her sister's excitement about the upcoming season, if there was even any left, but she wanted to make sure she was prepared.

The only nice thing about these events was the inclusion of her sister with the new season. Elizabeth had someone she could spend time with if she was unable to find Benedict. Elizabeth had made a promise to herself not to hover around Emily, wanting her sister to become a capable woman. Elizabeth believed in her sister and her choices, at least she hoped she would make good choices. Knowing she could not protect or teach her everything, Elizabeth knew Emily would have to make discoveries on her own. It wasn't like it would be easy, but she would figure it out.
She knew she needed a distraction from this particular ball, knowing if she didn't distract herself then she'd be constantly looking over to find Emily and see which gentleman was trying to swindle her into thinking they were charismatic and charming. If Benedict wasn't there to save her from her own suitors, she wasn't sure what she would do. Her eyes searched for him as the Davenport family arrived, looking down upon the sea of people before they descended the stairs. Elizabeth was able to spot her best friend but then saw someone else she was rather fond of. It had been weeks since she'd been able to spend time with Jeremy. They had left their home in the country and returned to the city, so she hadn't been able to sneak off to the lake to see him or send letters to him in their secret hiding space. Elizabeth realized that she had deeply missed conversations with him and even spending time with him in silence.
A particularly aggressive mama appeared to have cornered him and Elizabeth could only imagine how uncomfortable he must be feeling. Then another approached him and Elizabeth sighed. Hiding her arm behind her sister, Elizabeth quickly scribbled Jeremy's name on her dance card before walking across the room to hopefully provide a rescue he needed.
"Excuse me ladies," Elizabeth interrupted. "I'm terribly sorry to interrupt, but Lord Colborne has promised me this next dance." She lifted her arm slightly to indicate his name on her dance card. The mamas narrowed their eyes, knowing Elizabeth had only just arrived and they'd been harassing Jeremy for longer than that. But they were wise to not cause a scene but instead dismissed themselves, which was quite a relief. Turning to look at Jeremy, Elizabeth offered a genuine smile. "It's lovely to see you," she greeted him, dipping into a customary bow. No one else knew about their weeks spent together, reading by the lake and discussing poetry. It was a secret Elizabeth kept near and dear to her heart.
From what she could hear, the current song was almost over and the next would start momentarily. "I did not mean to rope you into dancing," Elizabeth assured him. "I'm sure you can excuse yourself so they don't see you." Elizabeth did not want to force Jeremy to dance if he was uncomfortable with it. While she would be disappointed in not getting to spend time with him, she would understand his desire to not dance.

12. My muse has been drugged with an aphrodisiac and is in a haze, needing a release.
Elizabeth did not fully understand why they were at a dinner with these people. It wasn't like any of them were in desperate need to impress these people or had anything relying on these relationships. Personally, Elizabeth found it a tad awkward that several members of the Wellington family had been invited to a dinner. After all, their son, Martin, had tried several times to court Elizabeth but she had always turned him down. There was something about him that she did not like, other than the obvious personality flaws. He made the tiny hairs on the back of her neck stand on edge, and not in a good way.
The only good part about the dinner was that she had Jeremy by her side. Their engagement had been a happy endeavor, though surprising to some. Elizabeth did not care what others said. Her father approved of the marriage and upon receiving that approval, Elizabeth realized how much it actually meant to her. Jeremy was different than the others but she appreciated that about him. They could have wonderful conversations and also sit in comfortable silence. Elizabeth knew that the wisest thing was to marry one's best friend and she truly believed she was being given that opportunity. Their friendship was different than the one she had with Benedict, which was quite alright, but it was a friendship she had adored nevertheless.
Sitting down to dinner, Elizabeth offered a smile to Jeremy and even reached under the table to give his hand a quick squeeze before anyone could see. She knew that social events were not his favorite but the fact that he was here with her meant everything. Making her not have to endure this alone was a gesture she would appreciate very much. Elizabeth did not appreciate the smirk on Martin's face as she reached for her glass, taking a sip even though something within her mind told her not to. She believed him to just be someone she did not wish to spend time around, for he did not leave a good impression upon her.
The dinner went on, polite conversation flowing and as time passed, Elizabeth found herself feeling quite odd. Her mind began to haze and she felt uncomfortable in her chair. Her temperature rose and she was quite certain her cheeks were flushed. Elizabeth did not know what was going on but she was surprised her stepmother did not comment on her appearance. Perhaps she was far too busy with her guests, which was usually a good thing for Elizabeth.
Dinner finished and Elizabeth was thankful for everyone getting to retire to the drawing room for further conversation. Perhaps she would be able to sneak out and collect herself and her thoughts. Elizabeth felt like everything was on fire and this was not a feeling she had endured before. It reminded her of something similar but she had never been able to place a label on what this feeling was. It was a feeling she sometimes got whenever she was around Jeremy. Ah yes, Jeremy. Perhaps he could help her.
The pair were at the back of the group as the others walked towards the drawing room. With her arm looped through his, Elizabeth pulled him back and down a different direction. "Come," she said with a smile. No one would bother them in Elizabeth's music room and it was far enough away where no one would think to even look there. Shoving Jeremy through the door, Elizabeth closed the door and locked it. "Kiss me," she said, moving forward and practically flinging her arms around him. Without even waiting, Elizabeth leaned in and pressed her lips against his. It was the smallest amount of relief but not what she needed.

She knew Whistledown tended to give Anthony a hard time when it came to settling down, as did the rest of his family, but Elizabeth wasn't sure she agreed that he would never settle down. In Elizabeth's opinion, she thought Anthony was aware of how important it would be for him to marry someday. One thing she admired about him the most was his loyalty to his family and marrying someone fell under that. "Well I dare say I don't think that's quite true," Elizabeth said. "He'll marry somebody. It might just be a bit more time." Not that it was any of Elizabeth's business. No doubt that was a family matter for the Bridgerton's, but she couldn't help but to form an opinion given how close she was with the family.
Frannie's question about if there were any men Elizabeth might tolerate made her sigh. There were certainly tolerable ones but that didn't mean she wanted to spend the rest of her life with them. "You shouldn't find someone simply tolerable if you are going to spend the rest of your life with them," she pointed out. "But no, I have found no gentlemen worth my time thus far."

To hear that if the right man would ask, that Philipa would gladly do those things, made Elizabeth pause and think for a moment. If the right man asked her to marry, would she throw all her morals and opinions out the window for him? She would like to think she was more strong willed than that but she knew she could not be sure. On more than one occasion she had complained about the women who changed everything about themselves to fit what a man was looking for. Did these women have no dignity? Elizabeth supposed she shouldn't judge, knowing that everyone had a different circumstance.
"I think you are worth as much as you believe yourself to be," Elizabeth said to Philipa. She looked at the woman and smiled. "You must have confidence in your worth, Philipa. If you cannot see it, how can anyone else expect to?" It was meant as a kind notion, of course. Glancing around for a moment, Elizabeth spotted a people she knew and those she wished to not have a conversation with. "Are there any suitors in particular you have your eye on? Perhaps I can help." Elizabeth was well versed in the knowings of the gentlemen at these events.

There was nothing Elizabeth looked forward to less than the upcoming season. It was just another season for men to try to gain her favor when in reality they just wanted her father's title, money and power. It was one unauthentic interaction after another. Fortunately, she was well versed in being polite while also ignoring these advances. It was difficult for someone to get close to Elizabeth and she preferred it that way. Of course, she knew the time would come for her to take a husband and she wasn't opposed to it. Elizabeth just liked her life the way it was. She loved her family and loved the freedom that she currently had. It wasn't something Elizabeth cared to change or give up.
Knowing that her sister, Emily, was about to enter her first season gave Elizabeth some anxiety. Emily was her favorite sibling and therefore, she was closest to her. She loved that Emily was a romantic and wanted all the good things out of life, but Elizabeth didn't know how to handle it. Their entire life, she had entertained her sister's desires, not having the heart to crush the notions. But Elizabeth knew they needed to discuss the expectations for the season and she needed to offer her advice on how to handle everything.
Walking down the hall, she peeked into the library to see if Emily was there. Once she spotted her sister, she walked inside and smiled, her hands clutched behind her back. "What are you doing in here?" She asked, looking to see if her sister had her nose in a book or was just trying to escape their step-mother.

Elizabeth found herself at yet another ball. At this point, they all seemed to blur together. It was all the same people and the same formalities. The only thing that ever differed was the setting but even the houses all looked the same in one way or another. The music was the same and the dances were the same. The same men would try to gain favor with her and Elizabeth would always be polite, but not friendly enough to give them the wrong impression. She knew it was time to find a husband and stop making excuses, but she couldn't help it that none of these men were ones she wanted to create a life with. Truth be told, there had been one man she had been unable to erase from her thoughts since meeting him but she was certain he did not view her in the same light.
Jeremy Colborne had been an interesting fellow, but certainly one that Elizabeth had enjoyed getting to know. They were able to converse about everything and anything. The best part was that Elizabeth felt she could always speak freely in front of him and he would never judge her. She liked to think he could do the same, as evident by the many improper things he'd said time and time again. Elizabeth was unsure if he simply didn't realize what he was saying was not necessarily the best thing to say, or if he felt comfortable enough around her to not care.
Elizabeth had been unable to speak with Jeremy yet tonight, but she knew she would likely dance with him twice this evening. Two times was always the allowed amount before people would start to gossip and assume an engagement had happened. Saving him a spot on her dance card was always assumed and even though her stepmother tried to get her to dance with out people, Elizabeth never listened to her.
There was one gentleman this evening that would not leave Elizabeth alone. Her eyes had searched for one of the Bridgerton brothers to help scare him away in absence of her own, but had been able to spot either Benedict or Anthony. Martin Wellington seemed insistent to spend the entire evening with Elizabeth, whether or not she was keen to spend it with him. He'd forced his way into nearly every conversation she had and after excusing herself to get some air, she feared he would follow her. Elizabeth tried to quicken her pace to get lost in the garden but was not quick enough.
Shoving her against a tree, Elizabeth yelped out and tried to scream for help but he was quick to cover her mouth with his hand. His other hand began to do ungentlmenly things, even tearing one of the sleeves of her dress. Elizabeth tried her best to push against him, but it was no use. She feared the worst and tried to squeeze her eyes shut in an attempt to make it all go away.
Then she felt him ripped from her and her eyes snapped open. Martin was on the ground and Jeremy stood in front of her. Her eyes connected with Jeremy's for a moment, relief washing over her for the first time that evening. Then she saw movement from the side and saw Martin lunge at Jeremy. Elizabeth went to yell, to warn Jeremy, but no sound left her lips. Instead, she watched as Jeremy pushed the man once more, this time, making him fall to the ground with a horrifying sound. Blood seeped from his wound and Elizabeth quickly moved her eyes away from the sight. They found Jeremy once more as her mind fought to catch up with what had just transpired.
Words came out of his mouth but not necessarily all of the right ones. Was she okay? She closed her eyes and shook her head. She couldn't get the images out of her head and without thinking, she took a step forward and wrapped her arms around Jeremy in an embrace. "Thank you," she sobbed. After a moment, she pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "Are you okay?" She asked. The realization that Jeremy had killed someone only just now beginning to occur to her. Not only had he killed someone, but he'd done it for her.

Elizabeth sat by the lake, the sun shining on her face. Her and Benedict had taken a walk down to the lake so they could enjoy the weather. Elizabeth was content to let her skin soak up the sun and she was sure that Benedict would spend his time drawing. She began to sing softly to herself, not loud enough for it to disturb Benedict, her eyes closed as she laid on the grass.
Then, something hit her face. One of her eyes peeked open and she waited a moment. Then another. Her hand flew to her cheek to wipe away a droplet of water. Elizabeth sat up and looked around. The sky didn't look cloudy but she was certain she'd just been hit with two rain drops. Looking over at Benedict, she tried to observe if he had felt it too. "Ben," she said slowly. "Did you feel that?" She asked.
As the last word left her mouth, it started to rain and then it started to rain harder. Squealing, Elizabeth jumped from her spot on the ground and rushed towards Benedict. There was no shelter for them to find and her home was a near half an hour walk, with the Aubrey Hall being even further. She felt the rain begin to soak through her dress, but Elizabeth only laughed. "Where should we go?" She asked.

Elizabeth would have rather been anywhere but at this social event. She'd thought with it being Emily's first season that her stepmother would be fussing all over Emily. Elizabeth had been a failure thus far so perhaps she could have better luck with her other stepdaughter. But no. She'd continued to fuss over both girls, insisting that this season Elizabeth absolutely had to marry. It wouldn't look good to have her continue to be unmarried, especially if Emily was to receive suitors this year. It all felt a bit much to Elizabeth. The fact that her future relied entirely on finding someone that wanted to marry her was overwhelming and now she felt more pressure than before because of Emily.
Lost in her own thoughts, she felt like she was doing the bare minimum when it came to socializing tonight. She was polite and courteous, per usual, but Elizabeth didn't do much more than that. Her eyes looked for Benedict to see if he could save her from her own thoughts, but instead spotted someone else. Jeremy. A smile graced her lips and she began to walk towards him, noticing he looked rather uncomfortable in his current conversation. Then he dashed out of there before she could get closer and worry faced over her features. She watched as he walked out towards the gardens and Elizabeth frowned. Elizabeth had not seen Jeremy lately but they had spent time writing letters to one another since meeting in the woods, and she found herself caring for him.
After fetching a glass of water from the refreshments table, Elizabeth made her way out towards the gardens to look for him. Glancing over her shoulder to make sure no one had seen or followed her, Elizabeth was satisfied and looked around for him. Spotting him near a tree, Elizabeth walked over towards him. "Jeremy?" She asked. No point in asking if he was okay, as she knew he wasn't. Setting the glass of water down, she tentatively reached out and placed her hand on his shoulder. "It's okay. Just breathe. Shall we count backwards from ten, only using even numbers?" Hopefully the trick would work. His brain would have to focus on something else.

It took a lot for Elizabeth to get upset. Most things just brushed past her and she didn't spend a lot of time fretting over them. But Anthony seemed to have a special talent for getting under her skin. It wasn't that he annoyed her all the time, because that certainly wasn't the case. No, it would not have been a good marriage if he could annoy her so easily and with everything he did. Their good moments outshone the bad ones but right now, Elizabeth felt like she just wanted to throw things at his head. Anthony had, of course, already been introduced to her desire to throw things during their engagement. Benedict was also someone that often got items thrown at him. It seemed the Bridgerton brothers had quite the habit of sending Lizzie off like this.
He just couldn't cut it off. He couldn't stop talking because Elizabeth just needed him to do so. She felt her hand reach out to grab something to haul at him. She never aimed the items directly at her target because even in her rage, she didn't want to hurt anyone. A pillow was sometimes aimed for the face but never a book or something similar. But Elizabeth found her hand was unable to make purchase on anything as Anthony walked towards her, making her back up until her back hit the wall.
Her eyes went wide. "What on Earth . . .?" Her question was cut off by the way he just stared at her. Elizabeth didn't even realized he'd taken her wrists and pinned them to the wall as well. She was completely at his disposal. Then he leaned in and kissed her. Lizzie was caught by surprise by the action but found herself melting into the kiss nevertheless. After only being married a few weeks, they had never done anything like this but Elizabeth found herself yearning for his touch.
