I WILL BURN ALL MY BRIDGES | to keep myself warm | TAGGED

“No, now that you mention it I don’t have any friends.” He replied with a smirk while they danced. He couldn’t stand the smell of the candles melting down, or the battling perfumes over meat and cheese. If this were where he found his friends he truly would have none. He was out his element even with experience and charisma. “I’m here for the free food,” he smiled at the thought and eyed the chubbier lords, hovering around snack trays and being overlooked.
Elijah had questions, but none of them were appropriate. He knew enough about them to know that Elizabeth was diverting from an age old script. It would subject her to a very difficult life in the long run. It wasn’t his place to advise her, or anyone for that matter when it came to courtship. He didn’t reply at first and focused instead on finding Lord Melfan in the crowd. When Elijah spotted him, he was disappointed to see him so red in the face and very alone. He let out a small sigh; not interested in swooping into that. He was distracted, but glad for it.
“If marriage is not your goal, do you have something else that you would rather do?” The music had shifted, but words could be heard over the band. It became more crowded, less private. He wasn’t as familiar with the structured dance, but with a moment of observation he could fall into a rhythm. “I wasn’t raised with those kinds of expectations… I can’t say I wish I could relate. Freedom has treated me better than most,”

True, it was rude to waste time. He was unlikely to refuse the new and potentially prosperous relationship opportunity. London was a large beast and difficult to tackle with a couple of thugs, a handful of runaway ladies and a club. Reuben had connections and resources that Elijah hadn’t considered. Networking in the criminal underground was less simple than networking among lords of the gab. He traced the parchment where his blueprint was drawn before setting it aside and looking up at Reuben with a Cheshire grin. He was mostly entertained by the thought of annoying hm. Reuben was already so stern, with a seriousness about him Elijah instinctively wondered if he could break after a round or two.
In a friendly manner, of course.
“Don’t worry,” he urged as he stood. So much time, work and effort went into building the club. Every detail, from the deep burgundy walls to the wooden detailing on every fireplace, counter, rail and column was chosen by him. It was his home, and allowing someone else to own even a fraction, or to be in debt was a true risk. Rueben had his own reputation, but the reputation didn’t scare Elijah. What concerned him were the things he didn’t hear. It wasn’t as if sinister criminals shared all of their details. There were lives he was protecting here. “I will not leave you waiting for long,” it was not his intention.
“I need to know if you have any reputable integrity. I’d like to believe you didn’t rise above other gangs through blunt force and betrayal but I need to know for myself before I find myself in debt to you,” his smile was still in place as he reached out his hand to shake his. “I appreciate meeting you face to face. This could be the beginning of something quite profitable for both of us,”

Elijah was nothing without his ambition. Men like him, born with little had to do whatever it took to keep their head above water and in a place above the spit and shit of the men above. It was a dance that was more difficult than it could ever appear, otherwise you have already lost. He had the confidence to gain the wealth and connections he needed to build his dream. It took quite a bit of power to hold back from immediate acceptance of the proposal, as it came from the lips of a potential snake. Who knew what he would ask for? If Elijah worked out a deal like that, he would keep his borrower or ‘partner’ on a tight leash. He had no intention on being kept on a leash. He carefully rolled the parchment back up and grinned at him.
“That’s an intriguing offer,” he said after a moment of thought. True thought; as he’d never been one to trust. He was suspicious of the offer, though he had not heard of bad professional dealings with Lord Reuben Slade. The ones he dealt with had to be good at keeping their business to themselves. Money lenders were all the same however. They talked, and talked and talked—unable to fix their own lives so they rejoiced to tear down others. It made for excellent intel. He would need to do his own research now; as he truly hadn’t heard enough. That was a good sign.
”You know how difficult it is to work in the shadows of this town. I didn’t get to where I am with hasty decisions...” though, it seemed that Lord Slade expected this. ”However, I am curious about the terms. Not just the amount, though it matters greatly, but also regarding your business. Do you intend to conduct business under my roof?” he didn’t like the idea of there being more than one boss around. Investment was one thing, but he was catering to gentlemen. Naturally, the idea of shrouding the club in blatant controversy was also something he wanted to avoid.

He was surprised that she accepted, given his blatant lack of standing. Money could get you many things in this world; the respect of men, a daughter with secrets of her own and a castle of gold but it would not make him an eligible bachelor to most of these women. No, they only cared for a title. He wondered to himself, what secrets this one had buried away, if she was so willing to fraternize with a man in front of others and wound her prospects by scaring away bachelors. He liked the idea though, so he didn’t press—after all, he had asked. He was in fact very aware of the etiquette and the fragile position being a debutant and as they went to the dance floor he could spot a few ears turning to gossip. Though the thought made him want to sigh, he offered Elizabeth a smile before leading her into waltz.
Soon, they would dance the quadrille which was a dance that he had yet to master. He was content with merely having as private as a moment as one could have in a room filled to the brim with prying eyes. He was confident that no nosy mother would notice him; that his obscurity would help him blend, but it might have brought more attention to her than he’d intended. ”I am here for a friend,” he replied. ”You say you have no choice… What do you mean?”
She was beautiful and though he didn’t know about her family he couldn’t imagine a reason that she would self sabotage at an event like this. He thought it must mean she’s seeking more than to be a mother and a housewife. She didn’t seem the type—too brave for a shut in life. Unfortunately for women in her position he didn’t imagine that to be too easy.

I WILL BURN ALL MY BRIDGES | to keep myself warm | TAGGED note: woot finally |
What a strange thing, to be called a Lord. He supposed it was common courtesy in these events to show utmost respect, but as his eyes trailed over the crowd of humming and dancing guests he saw the invisible. Not the Lords and Ladies, but the ones holding their snacks and beverages. The ones who took care of their discarded trash. Noone would ever make the mistake of calling them, ‘my lord’ and yet he had more in common with them than any of these pompous men. “My name is Elijah; Elijah Hamilton,” he chuckled softly and extended a hand, a greeting he’d seen many a time.
“I should have known that you would be here,” he was being disrespectful as he turned to look back at the needy, desperate crowd. They were all unmarried and here for one thing. He didn't see this woman as any different, really. He could see Lord Featherington’s daughters; now there was an unfortunate web of lies. Everyone had secrets. How thrilling it was to be privy to so many of them.
“My Lady, you are far more experienced than I, regarding these events at least. The parties that I host are far less bright,” the music was also better. Smoky rooms replaced high ceilings and glorious chandeliers. “Would it be inappropriate to dance? I am not well versed in the etiquette of such events.” It would not be good for her reputation. He knew that, so he was prepared for a no. Standing here felt awkward. He hated these places.

The highborn liked to pretend that inviting Elijah to their events was a great service. It was as if they thought that the dry food and dull company was a blessing to him. The music, bless the musicians, was just as dull. He would rather any night of the week in the club, with music and strong drinks. Instead he politely smiled when eyes met his and avoided conversation too intense. He had no title, but he dressed well and was incredibly attractive. It made him attract all kinds of attention. Who was he? Nobody.
God; he couldn’t wait to leave. If tonight went well and he smiled at the right people he would build a larger base. If he was familiar, they were more likely to come to his ominous club. It was exhausting keeping up an act when he enjoyed living life without pretense. When he looked around, pretense was all that he saw. He knew these men. He drank with these men. He leered with these men…. But here they were dressed in their best seeking a respectable woman, hopefully with a dowry large enough to pay off their debts.
That was when he saw a familiar face from across the room. She was not nearly as bold as she’d seemed the night she came to his club. She seemed bored. Carefully, he made his way through the sea of pastel women to stand near her. He was hesitant, as normally he avoided direct contact. She wasn’t dancing, though… Perhaps she didn’t care for the courtship. ”Good evening My Lady,” he greeted her warily with eyes combing the crowd for a potential guardian.

GILDED ROSE STAFF: There are few men that staff The Gilded Rose. Most of them are women who have come from desperate circumstances. He understands how difficult life on the street can be, and it's even more difficult as a woman. This is why he employs and protects women from his clientele. Most of the women work as hostesses; women to be leered at with strict courtesy rules. Still, it's a club where men drink and lose money. The staff needs to be tough and ready for anything. For this reason, he also employs his fair share of thugs. Mostly young guys who would be doing something worse with their skills.
People who work for Elijah are taken care of, but he expects honesty. He hates surprises and is known for being stone-faced and strict despite his ability to entertain.
p
THE FAVORITE (reserved!) When it comes to his staff, Elijah is close to them. There have been romances. The favorite has been his right hand for years and is resented for being so. I really, really love jessie mei li as a face claim because MAN am I a picshipper. -- She came from somewhere very far off, English is not her first language. He's been protective of her since her arrival. The reason for seeking shelter with him in the club is up to the player.

“As I said, that is the extent of the illegal activity.” It was not a lie, but divulging the business of his employees was not something he felt he needed to do. He wasn’t sure what this new face had his hands in. The streets of London were dangerous and filled with poor intentions. A nobleman who could travel with such minimal security was not a man to be toyed with, which was something that Elijah understood. He did not enjoy having him in his office, demanding answers. It was growing rather tiresome.
“This is almost an honest business, My Lord. Nearly,” he chuckled as he set took a roll of parchment off the floor and laid it across the desk. “When I say I am going to expand, I mean I will purchase these three properties and demolish them,” he grabbed his pen, more than happy to share this information. Before the gambling got out of control this had truly been a place he intended to be the best gentlemen’s club in all of high society. “We will have more room for gambling tables of course, back here… We will be adding a stage for the band along with two more bars and a cigar room. Upstairs, we will have rooms to rent for privately. That is my plan,” he smiled a little as he looked back up at his ‘new friend’.
“As for the loans I charge forty percent—they aren’t large loans and everyone expects to pay it back,” he laughed without humor. “But men are truly idiots,” he eyed him curiously as he wasn’t sure what any kind of partnership would do for him. He didn't know much about him at all other than he had an ominous reputation. They dealt with the same people; brushed shoulders he was sure.

“I did not know that I was addressing a saint,” he responded with a smirk. No saint would ever find herself here, or aware of this establishment. “Your friend can stay; nunneries are dull and harsh. Here, you just work for your bed. She will be able to make a small sum to support herself when she wishes to leave.” He told her this to ease her conscience, as he imagined that she wouldn’t be too fond of leaving a companion in the care of a corrupt club owner. He wanted to ease her mind. After Higgins, he had a feeling this would be a paradise, regardless of the dishonorable stares.
“As for the favor, I should refuse that. Getting involved with highborn girls is dangerous. Do you have a brother, my Lady? Perhaps a protective father who would see me beaten for entertaining your company in a den of debauchery?” He chuckled at the thought. He would end up staying for a drink, a chat, and perhaps a spirited game or two. He was excellent with noblemen. Experience had aided him tremendously. “Although, I could possibly make some guidelines for this… vague favor,”
He thought for a moment, honor meaning nothing. He just didn’t like having women do his bidding out of debt. Still, connections that were loyal were rare and difficult to find. “I will not ask you to do anything dangerous,” in this place offering favors was stupid. Some would want her to steal family jewels. Ten years ago, he would have been one of them. Things were different now. “I can walk you to your carriage, assuming you have it hidden in an inconspicuous alley. Did you need to bribe the chauffeur?”

Elijah was still irritated by the lack of detail. No amount of gold would ever make him feel right about these circumstances. He nodded, though. There was no hesitation there. They had the room and it seemed as if she was enough in need that she’d be willing to work. He had other women who could help her get settled. ”She can stay. Go back to the lobby and collect whatever things you have; tell the host to take you to the staff quarters.” he quirked a brow and gestured for her to move when she didn’t immediately take flight. Fortunately, she seemed to respond to non-verbal commands.
“You shouldn’t be offering favors to men like me, or be seen in a place like this Lady Davenport,” he said when the woman scurried away. His dark gaze fixated on her for a moment. He wanted to know if she was lying, or trying to deceive him into taking on a dangerous charge. He did not want to deal with that right now. “If you really cared for her you would have taken her to a nunnery.” His tone was bored at the thought. He found women safer there than in a club filled with drunk men.
“Your discretion makes me wonder if you’ve done this before. Your cloak looks barely used. Is this your first stealthy promenade through the streets of London?” He imagined that a life of nobility grew dull with the way men let loose away from their wives.

Rather quickly, Elijah ran through the potential benefits of partnering with the surreptitious mobster. It was difficult to think of any benefit to him other than security in knowing these altercations would not escalate. He wanted his business to grow, and to do that he needed money. It became clear that this conversation was to be civil. If not for his terrible negotiation skills and spite for losing anything, it would have been a simple enough interaction to anticipate. ”Make me an offer?” Elijah smiled a little at his words as he leaned in. His eyes roamed over him with curiosity before they lingered on his cane. Momentarily, he was distracted by the custom handle.
”It is a lounge; men come to smoke, and drink, and let off steam. They get to gamble their lives away off the books and I get a cut of the winnings. It’s a system too successful to risk with anything more complicated,” he drummed his fingers on his desk while looking over his guest with a very calculating eye. ”We are expanding, but until that is done, extra money is being lent out at a high interest rate. Most are hopeless, but there are quite a few brutes in this town willing to collect.” He wondered if he should mention the staff; mostly women he housed and employed to shelter them from street life. Many of them working the underground before. He pressed his lips together and searched for honesty.
”That’s the extent of illegal activity. Now please, are you interested in some kind of partnership? I am very curious. Here I thought you would simply demand a percentage.”

Elijah wasn’t about to refuse money for something he did for free. He took it with his eyes still on the girl. He took note of how she flinched and mumbled. Some of the girls here were like that… She’d do better cleaning rather than entertaining. ”What I need to know is, will anyone come looking for her?” he did not intend on getting involved in anything too dramatic if he could help it. The club was a renowned establishment. Violence was carried out miles away. Here, it was an escape. ”Why does she need somewhere safe?”
He walked back to his desk to be sure there was room for her downstairs. It was doable, which meant she could stay so long as her presence didn’t bring with it any violence.
”As for the escort… You’re someone; I won’t pretend to know who, but if the wrong person were to see you leaving this place your honor and reputation would suffer greatly. You are taking a very big, stupid risk coming here during the social season,” He saw no ring, which meant that she should not have come without a hand to hold. The maid, or her companion could have made the trip alone without endangering a young woman’s future.

The knock on Elijah’s door meant someone was dying or at least there was something severe enough to take him from his work. Managing a club was difficult enough, but handling the house debts and transactions was a time-consuming endeavor. When the door opened he glowered at the sight. A clean cloak, a fresh scent and dangling curls immediately indicated a high born girl in his club. It was something he forbade under all circumstances. The fact that she knew he was where she should turn for her… companion, was alarming. ”I don’t know who told you that, but they were wrong. I don’t just take in any woman that darkened my doorstep, and I especially don’t entertain ladies unaccompanied by an escort.”
He stood up and eyed her for a long moment before moving onto the girl she had brought. It was true he didn’t accept random women, but he would sooner provide shelter over a nunnery or a workhouse. His reputation for charity was not something he wanted to build. ”Who is our mutual friend?” As he spoke, he pulled the hood from the silent one’s head to examine her. Her beauty meant nothing to him, but he needed to make sure she was healthy. They were pretty, healthy in appearance without lumps in their throat. He was quick; checking simply for anything that may spread to the others.
”Why have you brought her here?” What on earth could a highborn woman find here, in a club meant for gentlemen of the court. They did not have the right to touch the women, true, but it was still a strange choice for most women of high birth.

♛ The club had naturally attracted a life of crime, to which Elijah was still new. He knew of Lord Slade and his grip on the criminal underground. It was the reason he didn’t want anyone who worked at his establishment to see him. Some feared that world for good reason. “I am,” he admitted without hesitation as he looked over his guest. “When my patrons run out of money, I offer some of my own. I am assuming by your presence here, my small reach is not satisfactory for you.”
Elijah was no stranger to getting into trouble with these kinds of people. Thieves and burglars tried to put him out of business more than once. This gangster would not succeed where they had failed. That was of course, if it was the reason for his visit.
“What would be a satisfactory arrangement that we can make together?” He asked as he sat down behind his desk and took out a thin stack of papers. He pulled his ink and quill closer so that he could update the ledger as needed before looking back up at him with a small smile. “Do you want a cut of the loans? Or are you here to shut me down entirely My Lord.”
He’d been well aware of the possibility of this visit.
