i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Benedict was hopeless. The man seemed to show on interest in getting married. He evaded conversations about it, and made himself scarce at balls. Even when Anthony provided a perfectly suitable match for him to court, he fled the notion . . . and Anthony's presence. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Kate Sharma. She was the daughter of a noble, and after his research, did not seem to have any scandal in the family. On top of that, she was a beauty, and men vied for her attentions. Why shouldn't Benedict wish to court her?
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Well, Anthony would not be so quick to let it go. In the past, he had allowed his brother to slip by but now that Daphne was wed . . . and this match was suitable, Anthony would intervene. Whether his brother liked it or not. Approaching the woman that he had yet to formally meet, Anthony politely smiled, his gaze upon another man chatting with her causing him to quickly dismiss himself. "Lady Sharma," he greeted. "I do not believe we have yet had the pleasure of being formally acquainted," he said, speaking aloud his earlier thoughts. "I am Lord Anthony Bridgerton," he introduced, slightly lowering his head in a polite bow.

Kate was enjoying the ball, even though she hadn't wanted to come in the first place. London was a bit over whelming for her, and she was still growing accustom to so many people together in one place. The balls she'd been too in the country were so much smaller, and simpler than that grand scale and ornate ball she was attending now. Jaded as she was however, she didn't stand cow eyed and giddy.
Hearing someone approach her, she smiled up at them--and the smile hesitated when she saw whom it was. Anthony Bridgerton. He spoke to her politely, and formally. It was a little hard to align this man with the charming rake that Whistledown painted him to be. "Lord Bridgerton." She gave her own bow. "I fear I have been introduced to you before." Not really. "Lady Whistledown wrote of you just yesterday, and was quite detailed in her introduction." She said it in amusement, even a little sarcastic. While not meant to insult him, it was hinting toward her knowing his reputation. Deciding to take some pity on him she continued, "Fear not, I believe on the same page, she said I looked like a scorched flower at the ball."
Kate was the type to be very clear in her meaning. Very direct in her words. Perhaps she was being too forward, but as she didn't see Bridgerton as a suitor she didn't brother with pretending flirt with him. Though now she realized he had not done the same. No comment on her gown or anything! Why would a rake not flirt?

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony felt the threat of embarrassment upon him when she said that she had been introduced to him before. Surely, he would have remembered. Though he had met many, he seldom forgot a face . . . particularly that of Kate's. But that threat quickly dissipated when she clarified, speaking of Lady Whistledown's words. He was no stranger to them, for his mother and sisters had spoken of it; of how she spoke of him.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Had Anthony been anywhere else, in the presence of a select few, he would have rolled his eyes. But instead, he remained polite and proper, stoic and composed. Kate even went on to say the insult Whistledown had made towards her. "Well then, it is evident that she is a fraud, and that her words should not be held to heart nor truth." Making it sound as if his dismissal of Whistledown was because of her cruel words towards Kate, and not the ramblings of him being a rake.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Whistledown could not be exposed sooner. Anthony had enough of her antics when it interfered with his family and their well being. In this case, it threatened to interfere with Anthony securing a wife for his brother. "It is my hope Lady Sharma, that you would allow me the chance to speak with you, and not allow the words of a secret figure taint nor form negative preconceived notions where it comes to the Bridgerton name." Mainly him, for he needed to be in her good graces if this was to work. With Benedict being useless in the process, he needed to appeal to Kate and present the possibility through her now.

Lord Bridgerton, being the 'gentleman' he was, dismissed the words as nothing more then a falsehood spun by a mysterious figure. Only Kate liked that figure (most times), and to be fair it wasn't as if she was looking her best at that ball. "Now, now, Lord Bridgerton, we both know she spoke truth. I was in yellow." Compared to her dress now, which was green. She might end up likened to grass tonight. However there was a rumor that said that if one didn't get mentioned that it was worse because they weren't worth talking about. So in a way, it had put her name out there for others take notice of her.
He counted more about not thinking bad of the Bridgerton name and she knew what he meant. However she wondered why he meant it. It was normal enough that she didn't give the reason too much thought. Everyone here needed their name to be good and worth something. The ton lived and breathed based on how good your name was, and how much it was worth. "Lord Bridgerton, I do think differently of your family name for what she says about you. I judge a man by his own actions, not the actions of their family." Meaning she didn't judge the Bridgertons, just the Anthony part. Though it was a subtle enough barb that it should mostly go unnoticed.
Kate wasn't mean as a person, not nor did she let people think her meek. With her step-mother being mild mannered, and Edwina being naive and fresh from school she knew she had to be strong in her father's absence. She had to make the hard choices and help her family in the way of the world. Letting rakes think she would turn a blind eye to their behavior was something she could ill afford. So no, she wasn't so mean to everyone, but Anthony Bridgerton was a rake. And she had too much on the line to let him turn her head.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Lady Whistledown was a subject that he cared little for. The woman -- presumably -- enjoyed exposing scandals and rumors and everyone held on to it as if it were gospel. But he could not speak ill towards the people who valued her words, for his own family were included in that category. "Perhaps," he agreed.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Though I am certain her word choice could have been better." Meaning, Whistledown could have described her in a more flattering way. Truth was of course, Anthony was not too bothered about it. He was here not for himself, but for his brother and trying to flatter and woo her was not her intention. He wished of course to be in her good graces . . . just as any head of household wished to be in the hopes of solidifying a union of marriage between two people.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Which also meant, he did not overly concern himself about what she thought of him based on what Whistledown said. So long as it did not impact her perception when it came to the Bridgerton family as a whole. "That is good and well," he told her, not wanting the focus of conversation to be him. "For I am coming to you regarding my family, or more specifically, one in particular."

His words were true, but Kate still added on, "I believe it's her word choice that has gather her such popularity among the ton. As well as her topics." Be is mocking her or reliving in his nightly deeds, Lady Whistledown was taking the ton by storm and had become the most popular woman without giving a hint toward her identity.
Yet the conversation moved on as he introduced the topic of coming to speak to her about a moment of his family. This made Kate pause as it seemed odd. Why would a rake and lord of the realm come to her--an stronger-- to talk about one member of his family. It could mean that she had either cause someone insult (which with her personality was a risk) or worse . . . . . yes . . . or worse. "I was unaware I had yet to meet any of your family formally." She said, trying to gauge what his intentions were. Because that would then proceed to determine her reaction.
While Mary was her mother in all sense of the word, without a father present she was left to make the hard choices. Mary was a good woman but didn't have Kate's head. Which why they of then worked in agreement. Mary would not let and engagement happen without Kate's approval--for either girl.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony had not come to her to discuss Lady Whistledown. The anonymous figure truly seemed to be on the tip of everyone's tongues in conversation . . . but he could not find a topic less interesting. It was just the gossips of a woman, and he got enough of that from his mother and four sisters. So he let the subject rest, far more intent on delivering his intentions for coming up to her. Though, she spoke of not being aware that she had yet to meet them and it did raise the question . . .
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Do you not wish to?" He knew his family was well reputed -- apart from whatever Whistledown may state against them -- so did she truly have no desire to actually meet any of them? That, would make his purpose in talking to her a bit more difficult. "I had thought to introduce you to my brother, who is also in attendance tonight." There was no need to beat around the bush with this one. After all, something told him that if she was really against his family, then she would make it quite clear to him, though he was holding onto her earlier words saying that she would not hold judgement against them based on the actions of one.

She had not made the best of impressions toward him, and now he wished to introduce her to his brother? Kate paused and watched him for a moment, trying to decide if this was forward, rushed, or just the way of things in London where everything happened bigger and with more pomp then in the country where she was used too.
"You wish me to meet your brother?" She asked, even though that was just what he offered. "Might I ask why, my lord?" Toward what purpose? It wasn't as if she was beautiful, or highly sought after. There was no need to pretend that she was. So why would a rake wish to introduce her to his brother with out purpose?

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony could not help but be a bit surprised by her question. She was asking him why he wanted to introduce them and that . . . was certainly unexpected. Their family was well known -- taking him and Whistledown's accounts of him out of the equation -- and so he often found that young woman who had the opportunity to be introduced to a Bridgerton son, just as men who were provided the opportunity to be introduced to a Bridgerton daughter, often did not question it. But Kate, asked why.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Seeming to want a concrete explanation for his intentions in doing so. As if it were not clear enough; or as if she would never have considered herself to be in their company. Realizing he had fallen silent for a few moments, he knew he had best speak. "Very well. I actually thought that perhaps the two of you may get along." Benedict might very well kill Anthony later, but he needed to push his brother. He refused to dance with any woman on the dance floor and made no effort to seek a wife.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ So, the Viscount had taken it upon himself to do that for him. Kate did not seem to demand the same attention that other women did and in that sense, seemed rather . . . lowkey. As was his brother. Why she was not however, Anthony did not quite understand for she was rather beautiful. "Do you have any objections to it?" He questioned, not really expecting her to say yes but then again . . . he hadn't expected her to question it to begin with. She was certainly full of surprises this one.
