kitty & alexander.
"I was not made aware you'd be coming home, my lord..." And why would she have been? She was only his wife, after all. Nobody ever thought to update Kitty on the General's comings and goings, least of all the man himself. It didn't matter how many letters she sent his way, she never heard back. At this point, she was used to it. In the early days of their marriage, some part of her had hoped that things would eventually change — they'd actually learn to enjoy each others' company, find things they had in common. Instead, she simply enjoyed her freedoms when he wasn't home, and remained thankful that she seldom had to endure his company.
It felt like a lifetime since he'd last been in Mayfair, so much so that she doubted if even Beatrice would recognise him now. The elder daughter, at least, had met him before — the same couldn't be said for Nancy. In a way, that was a blessing itself. What good would come of the girls meeting their father, when he likely wouldn't be back in town for some time again after the initial meeting?
"Shall I send for the children?" Kitty couldn't help but ask. Maybe things would be different this time, maybe he'd actually come home to try and make things right. It was a laughable notion, and she wasn't foolish enough to hope their marriage could be salvaged into anything that resembled a decent match...but maybe he'd try for the children. Or, perhaps, he was home with the hopes of siring an heir. That, after all, seemed somewhat more likely.
