t h e t w i n k l e o f t h e c a n d l e s IT'S AS IF WE SIT AMONG THE STARS Benedict was glad that the dinner was done! It felt near impossible to just sit there and not move about with the abundance of energy that he had. So once everyone was excused, he hurried to his room and half way through the hall, was already pulling off his waistcoat. Once in his room he tossed it towards the chair and proceeded to roll up his sleeves. Colin was right! This certainly helped ease his stress about not hearing back from the Royal Academy. Unaware that the door was still open, Benedict plopped himself on the floor to remove one boot. They were just so restricting and he wished to be free! Free of all constraints!
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Approaching footsteps caused him to scramble to a stand, only having successfully removed one boot as he looked at his mother who was standing in the doorway. A big smile was upon his lips as he watched her -- his mind not forgetting that he had spilled wine yet not recognizing the repercussions. "Mother!" He greeted excitedly . . . a little too excitedly. "Dinner was most excellent, would you not say? I would certainly say so! And I must say . . . the more the merrier!" Since they had guests. It made it more eventful indeed.

| Dinner had not gone at all how she'd anticipated. The majority of those in attendance had been perfectly well behaved, even the children had remembered the manners. Unfortunately, her attention had been drawn not by the antics of one of her youngest, but to her second born. Benedict had been acting most peculiar indeed, unlike himself and she was determined to find out what had gotten into him.
Once dinner had drawn to a close, she had excused herself discreetly to follow her son as he retreated to his room. By the time she stood in the doorway, he was standing in a state of undress- if you could even call it that when he'd just removed his waistcoat and hadn't even gone to the trouble of removing both his boots.
His enthusiastic greeting gave her reason to pause before stepping into the room. It was a little unwarranted considering he had only just bid her goodnight. It did little to ease her mind.
"You caused quite the scene tonight" she commented, recalling how he had spilled the wine, how he had reacted by covering his face in an almost child-like manner. Violet was almost certain that no one would remember Benedict's demeanour, not after Anthony's speech and failure to ask the question everyone had been anticipating.
Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise, but one she would no doubt get to the bottom of later. For now, her priority was Benedict.
"What has happened to you?" she approached her son, looking at his face and smiling in spite of herself. She loved to see her children happy, their smiles were something to delight in. But something about Benedict's smile, his attitude, it was wrong.
She was used to his teasing and good humour, but this went beyond that. |

t h e t w i n k l e o f t h e c a n d l e s IT'S AS IF WE SIT AMONG THE STARS Benedict was far too lost in the world of bliss to realize that his mother was referring to his ill mannered behavior at dinner. He saw nothing wrong with it . . . or her . . . or anything at all! Life was truly wonderful! He smiled grew to a a bit of a ridiculous one, as silly as he was when he spilled his wine. "Happened?" He asked, feigned exaggerated concern for the briefest of moments. He stretched his arms out on either side of him as if to make a grand statement, unable to contain his excitement that was positively bursting from within him.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "Nothing has happened and everything is glorious!" He twirled in a circle before moving closer to his mother. He leaned forward, kissing her cheek before drawing back but remaining close. "You look radiant tonight mother! As radiant as the sun! As radiant as . . . as . . . the moon!" He was such a darn good poet. "Is not life so exquisite? We have so much surrounding us and it is . . . so inspiring. Everything inspires!" It was truly a touching thing to consider, enough that Benedict's eyes welled with tears of joy and pure happiness. Not wishing to savor that moment alone, he wrapped his arms around his mother in a hug, pressing his cheek against her cheek affectionately.
