It was almost as though they were caught in a circle, the pair of them- a waltz that never quite seemed to end. Everywhere she turned or went, Benedict Bridgerton seemed to be there- be it when Sophie was trying to assist the upstairs maids in cleaning the rooms, her would be sitting in there with his sketchbook, or she would be called to have tea with Lady Violet and her daughters and Benedict would be there lounging in a chair with a novel. Sometimes he would even be rounding the opposite corner when she was moving by with the laundry. Nothing was more maddening than catching his gaze and only thinking back to the days at My Cabin or the evening they shared the night they met, their discussion prior about her becoming his mistress and her denial of it, and, almost above all of that, the truth that Benedict did not yet know- who she was. Nothing could possibly be more maddening that watching him and being lost in what if's- Would he turn his back on her if he found out? Would he insist that she become his mistress? Would he have her fired? Had his feelings, or what she was assuming were his feelings, changed since she had rejected his Sophie did not know and she was not sure she wanted to take a chance to find out. Instead she was going to drown herself in work, hope that either the pair of them would discuss their emotions and meet some agreement or until she felt she had worked long enough for it to be respectful to retire. Work became a distraction and something that she tried to use to avoid thinking on all that she was worried about along with what she got paid with and it was what she tried to drown herself in it. Thus far, her chores for the day had been completed thoroughly and to her relief and disappointment she had yet to see Benedict. That, of course, only meant that it was a matter of time until she did, but Sophie worked on, thinking now on what she would say to him should she encounter the lord. Sure enough, he was there, sitting in drawing room, sketchbook in hand. After closing the door, her greeting was simple, a small "Good afternoon Mister Bridgerton." Before turning back to dust, then collecting Eloise's missing notebook and Hyacinth's bow as well as of the other things that she could find that the daughters must had left behind, then turning to the door once again. ...But it wouldn't open. At first she assumed that the door was simply not opening because she had a poor grip on it, but after trying to shift the items in her hand and try again but to no avail. Sighing slightly and moving to set her items down she tried again and was only met with the same result. Oh heavens… had she done something previously to the door when she closed it? Certainly it must be able to open in some way… Turning to the man in the room, she smiled softly, apology in her eyes. “I believe we might be locked in.” Part of her wanted to ask if he might be able to try it out, but she did not want to take him from his art. “Would there happen to be a way to open it from this side?” Tag ~ Benedict Bridgerton ~

I'm not bound by Benedict's mind seemed to have been distracted as of late, for he has been distracted. Ever since Sophie had agreed to work for his family -- though rejecting his proposal to be his mistress so that they may be granted time alone -- he found it difficult to not draw his gaze to her. Yet he tried. Often failing, but still he tried. In moments where he felt no one else was looking, he'd dare steal a glance at her, and quickly looking away when there was the risk of someone catching his line of sight.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Thus far, no one seemed to be aware of it. But it was getting increasingly difficult, especially after the time they had together at his estate. From there, now thrust into this home full of people where they were faced with opposite circumstances. From being only the two of them, to now . . . so many others. He was currently sitting in the drawing room, attempting to work on a sketch when he heard someone enter. He didn't need to look up from his work to see who it was. In fact, he forced his eyes to stay on his paper. He knew this was a perfect opportunity; no one else was around.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Surely he could look at her. Take his time to silently praise her beauty. And yet, he kept his eyes locked on his paper, trying to remain focused on the task at hand but damned it all, she made it so difficult. "Sophie," he greeted in return, slightly clenching his jaw and hoping it went unnoticed as he attempted to fight the overwhelming urge to lock eyes with her. To simply, gaze upon her. It wasn't until he heard the shaking of the door that he looked up from his work, in time to see her cast him a look of, was it apology? Commenting on the fact that they may be locked in. Benedict remained calm, unpanicked as he closed his sketchbook and set it on the side. Rising from his position, he walked over to her.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "You say that like it is a bad thing," he told her teasingly, joking towards the fact that . . . well, they hardly were ever alone now and they could barley even communicate. Benedict's hands moved to the handle, attempting to open it but it was as he had suspected if she herself could not open it. "Unfortunately not," he said, trying to shake the handle a little more but to no avail of it budging. "The lock had been proving to be a challenge as it had stiffened." He paused, knowing there was no point to keep trying to open it. He then turned his head to look at her. "It is why we always leave it ajar," he told her, though his tone was not accusatory. Instead, it held teasing to it as he could not help but smile with an expression to match the tone.
