There was limited reasons a man invited the a whole family to his Viscountial Estate. LIMITED! In fact, Kate could only think of ONE! He was not having a party, he invited them to get under her skin and she knew it! He knew it! He knew she knew it! She knew he knew that she knew it! She HATED that he knew she knew it! Smug bloody rat that he was!

Over the past few months of knowing Anthony Bridgerton, he and Kate had formed a sort of unique . . . . challenge. On one hand, they bickered and fought all the time--and on the other he had been her first kiss. He had touched her and awoken something inside of her.

AND HE WAS NOT WAKING ANYTHING UP IN EDWINA!

Kate had looked EVERY WHERE! She knew he would have a ring somewhere if he planned to propose to Edwina without her blessing. She had been sneaking out of her room during times (a lot of it at night) and looking for it. She would stop this game of his before it went too far! How dare he kiss and touch her and then wed her sister!

The day had been rather busy. He was playing host to the Sharma family, and with that . . . came challenges of its own. No. One particular challenge: Katherine Sharma. She was infuriating, and certainly would not make this journey to proposing to Edwina a simple one. Well, it was not the difficulty of actually proposing to her but rather, ensuring Edwina would accept his proposal. For with that, needed to come Kate's approval. And Kate, had made it quite clear early on that she would not allow him to marry her younger sister. Fortunately, he seemed to be winning Mary's favor and even Edwina's -- without the risk of any deep emotional attachment -- but Kate. She was proving to be rather stubborn about it.

The day had drawn to an end and everyone had retired to their rooms for the night. Anthony however could not sleep. Whether it was the meddlesome woman on his mind -- something he did not care to admit -- or deeper troubling thoughts, sleep eluded him and so he decided to make himself product and spend some time in his study, collecting some papers and books he wished to take back to London to his main study -- his father's study. But before he entered, he saw sign of candlelight coming from the room, curiosity rising within him.

None of the servants went in without his presence or permission and no one else would dare enter it. The door was open and he went to stand in the doorframe, the woman before him unmistakable even if he only saw her from behind. He just watched her for a few moments, his own candle in hand as she rummaged through his things. This woman would be the death of him. "What the hell are you doing?" He demanded, not even bothering to keep the curse from his tone as he stepped inside the room.

Kate was just looking through a drawer, when she herd his bark! Jumping she slammed the drawer closed but it made some of the things topple over on his desk. Quickly--almost frantically--she reached for them and corrected them. It lead to a moment of scrambling around before she could finally looking up at him. Caught! Stupid man! WHY was he not in bed!?

She had known it was a bad idea to look for a ring, and snoop but she wanted proof that he was planning to ask Edwina here so she could put a stop to it before it happened! Not only would he not make Edwina happy--as she wanted a bookish man who she could have intelligent conversation with and Anthony was well . . . . a physical man. WHICH BROUGHT HER TO POINT TWO, he had KISSED HER and he could not kiss them both!

"I was looking for something. It is clearly not here. So I should be going now! Yes, good night my lord." Yes! Escape! Kate stood up and moved to walk toward the door, and leave--though he would have to move in order to let her.

There were many things that could be said about Kate, but her being a fool was certainly not one of them. So even Anthony knew that surely she knew, there was no way he was allowing her to leave here without an explanation. As she moved to the door, Anthony stood firmly in place, blocking her exit. As if she held any more doubt, he stepped forward, causing her to push back a little as he closed the door behind him, now making an exit even more difficult, if not impossible.

"We both know you are not going to go that easily," he told her, vocalizing -- and solidifying -- his earlier thoughts. "What were you searching for, in my study," he demanded, adding the part about his study as that was exactly what it was. She was rummaging through his personal belongings as if she owned the place and so, he was not stepping aside until she told him what exactly it was that she was searching for. Clearly she had not found it but that was not due to any lack of trying.

Yes, well she had not thought that it would work but yet a girl had to try for the easy way out. Instead, Anthony took a step closer toward her and it made her have to step back a few smaller steps in order to keep his chest from touching her . . . chest. Then he shut the door. "This is familiar." She muttered under her breath, knowing the last time he shut the door when she was caught in his study that he had kissed her--then humiliated her by making her pick up the key.

He echoed her thought by telling her they both knew it. She looked back toward the window but decided that was a little too dramatic. Plus he would stop her. So she looked back up at him and put her hands on her hips. "You're going to propose to Edwina without my permission." Fine! She would skip the ring, and go right for him! "It would force her in an unwanted position. I was looking . . . for the ring!" To stop it!

Kate vulgarly thought the only way this moment could have been worst was if she had found it and he hand caught her trying it on or something. She had to remind herself that this could have been worse! So instead of backing down, she took the (theatrical) fight to him.

Anthony chose to ignore her comment about the familiarity of this. He of course knew what she was referring to: the last time he had caught her in the study. Truth was, it was not his proudest moment where he had tossed the key for her to pick it up. And even though he had apologized for it, he continued to feel guilty . . . know that what he did was not at all gentlemanly. And whatever games Kate and he engaged in, she most definitely did not deserve that.

Fortunately, she continued on by saying that he was going to propose to Edwina without her permission. And that . . .she was looking for the ring. "Why, so that you may try it on?" He teased arrogantly. "And unwanted by who?" He added for further clarification. "If I were to propose to Edwina, would she truly reject it?" He . . . wasn't planning to. Despite all his teasing, the challenge now was to win Kate's affections approval. But, he could not help but make such comments to her, enjoying the rise he got from her. The way his words and actions could get her so worked up. It was becoming more and more enjoyable.

"Why, so that you may try it on?" Where had that come from!? Kate looked at him and her eyes widened as she began spurting out sounds trying to think of a comment scathing enough to put his arrogant (handsome) face in it's place! Thankful that her skin was dark enough to hide the red that flushed, and that he had asked something else so she did not have to try and focus on THAT, "If I were to propose to Edwina, would she truly reject it?" and instead on that!

Edwina had better say no! Kate did NOT wish to see her sister married to a . . .to a . . . to him! It left an unwanted pit in her belly at the idea! "She would not wed anyone without approval, and that is an approval that she knows is not forth coming." Though it was becoming harder and harder to explain why. "She knows were I stand on the topic of you, as I have made it clear many times." Too late did she realize she had admitted to talking about him.

Anthony took a deep breath, listening to her reject approval over him marrying her sister. It was maddening! How she rejected him so . . . concerning his sister -- the latter words Anthony practically forced into his mind. Why was she so . . . difficult! Why was she so tiresome! Why was she so . . . so . . . infuriating! "A stolen ring will not deter me from my intentions of marrying your sister." Yes. He was inadvertently calling her a thief for trying to steal the ring. A subject he was not yet willing to let go of.

"Nor will a meddlesome sister." This insult, less inadvertent and more blunt and obvious. "I am already gaining your Edwina's affections." Anthony could tell. Why else would she be so keen with his company. Why else would she smile the way she did when he spoke to her. And yes, his arrogance made him bring such things to voice. Though perhaps it was not only to remind Kate, but to enrage her of such facts as well. "You would make this process a great deal easier for your entire family, if you simply accept this, and grant your approval." He hated that she was such a block in his goals. One that was not budging by any means.
