they lived, bitch. | Violet knew that something was not right, when it was taking too long, and the baby still had not arrived. The way the doctors spoke in hushed voices after examining her, so that she might not hear the words they exchanged. She could see the urgency written all over their faces, but they would not speak to her.
They would only speak to Edmund, acting as if she was not in the room as they discussed the options available. She could not stop the tears from falling when Edmund relayed it to her, of the choice that had to be made... Only, it was never really a choice, not to him.
They might lose their child, but he would not lose her.
Violet had sent him from the room at that moment, insisting that he should be with their children. They would need reassurance that despite the noises that were coming from that room, everything would be well. They would be scared; they needed their father with them.
Part of her wished that she had not sent him away, she wanted him beside her. Giving her that same reassurance he'd be offering their children. But if she was to die bringing this child into the world, then she did not want Edmund to bear witness to it. She would not allow him to suffer that.
She felt as if the pain itself would kill her, she almost wished that it would. She could not keep silent as they brought the baby into the world and once it was over, the sound of her screams was replaced with the squeals of an infant.
Violet's tears turned to those of relief, as someone placed her daughter into her arms. Realizing as she looked at the baby who looked so much like Edmund, that she could not imagine a world where she did not get to meet her.
Hurried footsteps approaching the room dragged her gaze from the baby in her arms, her face alighting in a smile when she saw her husband standing in the doorway. Blinking back tears, she extended a hand for him wishing that he would take it.
"I feel I should introduce you to our daughter" her voice was hoarse from the screams that had torn at her throat, but her heart was full. Things could have turned out so differently, the idea that Edmund might have been faced with the reality of losing both of them. It did not bear thinking about.
She could not imagine leaving him to raise their children alone. |

| There was no greater torment than to witness your child in pain and being powerless to alleviate their suffering. When she had gone to visit with Benedict after he'd insisted upon isolating himself away from their family, she had never seen him looking so lost.
It was clear that he was suffering through the most painful of grievances one could ever endure. She had told herself that she would not pry into his business and that he would come to her if he wished to, but how could she keep to herself when he looked so broken, so unlike himself.
The truth was unspeakable. That he had fallen in love with a married woman was scandal enough, but the fact that she was carrying his child? It had left her at a loss for how to comfort him, because what was there left to say? The woman was married, and yet... She had somehow captured Benedict's heart.
Violet had promised not to meddle once she learned the truth of Benedict's distress. Inviting the woman of her son's affections might be seen to some as a breach of that strictly verbal contract, but she considered it a courtesy. To extend the hand of friendship towards a young lady whose social circle thus far seemed rather limited.
Then there was the simple matter of the child, that would technically be her grandchild, in blood alone if not in name.
Sipping her tea as she sat across from the woman who had somehow managed to seduce her second son, she allowed herself a smile. "You have done it twice before, the third really is no more different" it had been many years since she last had a baby in the house, but once you had raised one child through infancy, you were well equipped to do it again
"I had my husband; he was a wonderful father and devoted much of his time to helping with the children" the smile slipped from her face as she replaced her cup upon the table. "We lost him before Hyacinth was born and the idea of raising my daughter alone was daunting" she gave the other woman a knowing look. She almost pitied her, for it was obvious that she did not have the love or support from her husband, or why would she search for it elsewhere?
"Now, Hyacinth was a handful when she was small. I do not think I would have coped, if it weren't for Anthony" her son had stepped up in the absence of his father. Clearing her throat, she took to refilling her cup with fresh tea, not looking up as she spoke "I think it much depends on the child, Hyacinth was a handful but then Benedict was such a quiet baby, I often found myself checking that he was still breathing"
Her eyes met Kitty's over the table "more tea?" She reached to fill her cup, stilling her hand as she awaited word to do so. |

casually sets the scene. | Watching him place down the book he'd been so engrossed in; she gave a sympathetic smile. Though he hardly seemed to mind the interruption and she could not bring herself to feel too badly about it when her heart still fluttered in her chest whenever he smiled at her, even after all these years together.
"If we are to have another Eloise on our hands, then I rather fear for Gregory" smiling, she could not bring herself to imagine another child quite like their Eloise. The house was already loud enough with one running amok, how they would cope with two was anyone's guess.
"Henry...?" she repeated, pondering the name that he had suggested, a small shake of her head following. "I do not think it too serious at all, Henry is sweet..." though perhaps too sweet to be suitable for a child that had just been compared to the loudest of their children.
"Perhaps we will not know their name until after we have met them?" it was always a struggle when they had picked out a name only to find it did not fit the baby once it arrived.
Reaching for his hand, she gave it a light squeeze. "How about we take the children for a stroll around the garden tomorrow? We might find further inspiration as we stretch out legs" |

| There was something wrong, and Violet was clueless as to what it was. It was apparent that something had happened for Benedict to isolate himself. He had taken himself away from the family and had not visited in days. It was most unlike him, and she was beginning to suspect that whatever had caused this drastic shift in behaviour was serious.
She had opted at first to give him space. He would return when he was ready, whether he chose to confide in her, she would respect that. Or try to. But when the days stretched on without word from her son, Violet had begun to worry.
The decision was made to make the journey out to check on him. She would not pry, but she had to know that he was alright, that he was eating and that he was not punishing himself. He could be so hard on himself sometimes; she feared it was a trait many of her children shared and one that was difficult to overcome.
Standing in the entrance, she smiled but it did not reach her eyes, not when he could not even bring himself to smile at her in return. She had told herself that she would not pry, but how could she stand by when her child was in such distress. He was a man grown, but he was still her son, and it was obvious that he needed her.
"I came alone, though Eloise was quite adamant she accompany me" she could not blame the girl for being concerned for her brother, with how distant he was being. However, she had opted to refuse any such offer of company, assuming that Benedict would not appreciate the bombardment of his siblings, no matter how well meaning they happened to be.
"We miss you at home, when will you return?" she felt that it had gone on long enough, but to tell him as much would only result in him pulling away. |

somebody sedate me!! | Watching her daughter crying upon her bed was enough to cause her heart to split wide open. She had only ever wanted the best for her children, from the moment that she held them in her arms. She wished for them to know love and happiness, and for the world to be kind to them. But it was clear to her now that the world had not shown her daughter kindness and she had done nothing to shield her from it.
Perhaps she had placed too much pressure upon her, upon all of her children. To appear perfect in the eyes of society, and to follow the rules laid out for them, no matter how restrictive they turned out to be.
“Papa would be disappointed,”
The air felt like it had been knocked from her lungs, and for a moment she could not find words in which to speak. "Why would you say such a thing?" she could barely bring herself to choke the words out, appalled that any of children might feel that way about their father.
It had been a privilege to witness the love which Edmund had for their children. His love for them had been unconditional and had never once wavered. Shaking her head, she blinked back the tears that burned her eyes, wishing not to upset Eloise further by allowing her to believe she had caused her hurt.
"Your father loved you; he would hate to hear you speak this way" it was cruel how little time Eloise and the other children had with Edmund, before they lost him. Now the only thing she could do was ensure that they never forget the love their father had for them.
"He did not know how to be disappointed in you, how could he? You were his entire world"
She did not wish for any of her children to feel pressured into an unhappy marriage to please her, because that would not, please her. The world was not kind to women who refused to marry, she did not want her daughters to be subjected to such a life. On the outside of things, shunned by society, but that did not mean she wanted them married off to men who did not love them, or that they did not love in return.
"My dear, I do not wish for you to marry a man for whom you share no affection" actually, she wanted nothing less than for that to be the case. "I want you to experience what your father and I found in each other, the love we had for each other. I want that for you, for all of you" some may find it unrealistic to desire each of her eight children married for love rather than convenience, but surely, she should want the best for them.
If they were not happy, then what was the point in any of it, really? |
