5.with a stab wound As the coach approached Lansdowne House, Tilly's heart raced with excitement. The ball had been a grand affair, and she had enjoyed every moment of it, contrary to what she had expected in the beginning. One could almost say that she was starting to find her way back into the society of London. As the coach came to a stop, Tilly thanked the driver and prepared to step out, her feet already sore from the discomfortable shoes she had beared the entire evening. However, her excitement was short-lived, as she saw two men approaching her, their faces shrouded in the darkness of the night. The Marchioness' instincts immediately kicked in, and she knew that something was not right. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and she felt a sense of danger lurking in the air With trembling hands embracing her body, the young girl waited for the servants to open the door. " Any minute now." she thought, trying to breath and behave normally so the men couldn't sense her fear, to no avail. One of them dared to speak to her in a very impolite manner and stepped closer, almost breathing in her face. Tilly's heart pounded in her chest, and she quickly took stock of her surroundings. The street was deserted, and there was nobody around to help, the coachman had left and no one would hear if she screamed, so she prepared for the worst. The tears were already forming in her eyes when the second man pulled her arm with strength, leaving immediate marks on her ivory skin, in order to remove the bracelet engraved with emeralds. " No!" she said, her voice authoritarian but still filled with fear. They laughed upon her act of bravery, a reaction that would only entice them to hurt her even more. At that moment, Matilda was fearing the worst scenario and it was like an adrenaline rush possessed her, leading her to a more daring act. She drew herself up to her full height, squared her shoulders, and put on her most imperious expression. " How dare you!" she exclaimed, trying to sound as confident as possible. " Do you not know who I am? I am the Marchioness of Lansdowne, and you will not lay your filthy hands on me!" The robbers didn't seem taken aback by her boldness. " We know very well who you are, your grace." one of them mocked her, while the other exposed a sharp and polished dagger, pointing it towards her. A special friend sent us here." A special friend? Who? Who could possible be the mastermind behind the horrendous crime that was about to happen? As Tilly questioned herself, she felt a sharp pain near her stomach. She watched as the blood soaked her beautiful light pink dress, creating a new pattern on the fabric. Who could possibly want her dead? And why? For her fortune? For the title? Everything went dark for a moment, and Tilly felt her legs give way beneath her. She hit the ground hard, gasping for breath, her vision swimming as she heard a voice calling out towards them. The two men soon disappeared, running away with the blood-soaked dagger, trying not to get caught, while the Marchioness debated with her own mind if she was going to survive or not. ★ faiYou had to kill me, but it killed you just the same

"Felix and Matilda are old friends trying to find each other again" Tilly had woken up that morning feeling a sense of longing and nostalgia after a very precious, yet melancholic dream. It had been about Felix, a name she hadn't forgotten but also hadn't left her mouth in years. Felix had been her friend during her childhood, someone she had not expected to be in her life due to their different upbringing. Yet, destiny had allowed them to be in each others lives even if only for a brief period of time and despite her parents' disapproval. The dream had brought those memories back to the surface, with real scenarios of their childhood playing in her head as she was deeply asleep. Tilly had woken up agitated and confused, mistaking Lansdowne House for the house on the coastal hill of Sidmouth and found herself wondering what had happened to Felix since they had last seen each other. Unable to shake the thought from her mind, she asked one of her trusted servants who had served her aunt in the past if she remembered Felix and had any information on his whereabouts. After a few moments of thought, the servant recalled that Felix had become a blacksmith and worked in a nearby town, and such information brought a new glow to Tilly's chestnut coloured eyes. Dressing in a discreet beige dress with soft golden details and a matching long coat, the Marchioness found herself stepping inside a blacksmith's shop. " Felix?" she called him loud enough, remembering his condition. " It's me, Tilly." ★ faiWhen the past comes back

The sun was setting behind Aubrey Hall, casting a warm orange glow over the horizon, announcing that the day was coming to an end soon. The tall trees surrounding the grounds rustled with the gentle wind, and the grass beneath Matilda's feet swayed in response. The Marchioness adjusted her grip on her mallet, still replaying the pall-mall game in her head. She had the opportunity to join the Bridgertons for a few days at their country estate and the plan for that afternoon had been a very avid competition of pall-mall that nor her nor Benedict Bridgerton had won. Yet, she appeared less preoccupied with the matter than him. " I finally accept that I'm am the worst pall-mall player." she said, her voice sweet and melodic. Tilly was not the most enthusiastic person when it came to sports, she accepted her well deserved defeat with ease and preferred to focus on the enjoyment rather than on the competitive side of the matter. Matilda couldn't help but notice that Benedict wasn't really listening to her, he hadn't said a word since they had finished the game and the scenario didn't seem to be heading for a change. No other words left her lips, instead she took in the moment to study him. His handsome face was creased with a worried frown, and she could see a small drop of sweat on his forehead from their earlier game. Something was bothering him, of that the Marchioness was sure. In a not very gentle way, Tilly tugged on the sleeve of his shirt and pulled him aside from the gravel path and the eyes of his siblings." What is it?" she asked, her tone gentle as the accidental brush of her fingers on his. " What is tormenting you, Lord Bridgerton?" ★ faiA penny for your thoughts

Tilly had always known that her debutant ball would be a momentous occasion, but as she stood in front of the crowd, she couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. The young Marchioness watched as other girls swayed their way through the whole experience, watched as they were ogled and scrutinized by a sea of suitors who cared nothing for their personalities or interests, only their appearance or dowries. Tilly knew that she would be no exception and that infuriated her, not to the point that she wanted to rebel against the entire society of London, but to the point that made her want to leave without explanation, return to Sidmouth and live by the sea till she perished. At least there she would be left alone and wouldn't have to pretend she cared, specially for the men that asked to write their names on her dance card like they had been doing that night. Suffocating was the best word to describe her feelings in that moment, as she observed the other young ladies vying for the attention of the eligible bachelors, their mamas hovering anxiously behind them, eager to make a match. It was a scene she knew all too well, and one she was not keen to participate in. Moving away from her mother and the group of ladies that surrounded them like hawks watching a prey, and with the excuse of getting herself some fresh lemonade, Matilda escaped through the side door into the great hallway that lead to more secluded and silent areas of the house. The sounds of the ball were muffled there, and she could finally breathe! A slightly ajar door caught her attention, and before she could stop herself, her hand was already on the handle, pushing it to reveal a peaceful art room illuminated by the almost extinguished fire of the fireplace. Despite being fully decorated with portraits of monarchs and other important people that eyed her frozen in time, they couldn't take the breath out of her lungs like the others, and it felt good. Yet, sooner or later she would have to give in and choose someone. " Sometimes you just don't know the answer until someone is on their knees and asks you." she said to herself, quoting the words of her wise late aunt. Maybe she should just follow her advice and get done with it. But before Tilly could indulge in more deep thoughts, a noise startle her. She was not alone! ★ faiForever is the sweetest con

The chilly night air enveloped Tilly as she stepped out of the house and onto the gravel path that led to the gazebo. The full moon cast an eerie glow over the landscape, and long shadows across the rose gardens that had been planted many years ago, when the old Marchioness was still alive. The night was silent because the hour was late, two minutes to midnight to be precise, the city was already fast asleep for the majority of it. Tilly wrapped her shawl tightly around her shoulders, feeling the cold seep through the woolen fabric, wondering how long would it take for Anthony to arrive, at the same time she tried to control the sense of excitement mixed with trepidation that was consuming her. That was the thing about illicit affairs and clandestine meetings at strange ours of the night. There was a thrill of it that had been fed for a week now, since the last time that they had seen each other. Then the letter came, leaving the Marchioness desperate for the night to arrive with the opportunity of a glimpse of Anthony Bridgerton. How he had managed to enchant her was still a question that remained unanswered and, sometimes she also wondered how was it possible for him to even spare her a stolen stare, after all he was the Viscount. Far away in the city, the clock announced the arrival of the midnight hour, making Tilly's heart pound so quick that she thought she was going to faint. Under the pale moon light she waited, not wishing to look around so his arrival would be a surprise, but the delay on his presence was making her question his letter. Was Anthony really coming? ★ faiyou know damn well for you, I would ruin myself a million little times

"I saw it as clearly as I see you standing there now."
Tilly had been strolling through the streets of London followed by a helpful but very slow walking maid who had insisted on carrying all the boxes by herself, despite the young girl's attempt to help. It was not very lady like, the maid would say every time she tried to remove one of the boxes that carried a new attire for the ball from her hands. Ahead in her trail, Tilly stopped abruptly when she heard raised voices up ahead. Curiosity piqued and she hurried towards the sound, only to find a man confronting another that seemed from a very higher class. Hidden from them, Tilly could hear a few words - the first man was demanding payment for the nobleman's gambling debts, and he was not being very kind about it. She looked behind, noticing her maid engaging in conversation with some other woman. As Tilly watched from the shadows, the situation quickly escalated. The man drew what appeared to be some kind of weapon and pointed it at the nobleman, who was clearly terrified. Tilly's heart raced as she realized that she was witnessing a dangerous situation and that perhaps she should have walked slower after all. After the tense exchange, the nobleman reached into his pocket with a shaky hand and pulled out a small pouch of coins, which he handed over to the other man. Letting out a breath she didn't know she had been holding the entire time, the Marchioness watched as the attacker examined the pouch for a moment, then nodded his head and slipped the coins into his pocket. He is leaving, she thought, relief taking over her, which meant she could also abandon her hiding spot. Everything seemed to be going well until she placed her right foot in the wrong place and a small scream left her mouth when her hands hit the floor, trying to protect her face. Tilly had tripped and all the fuss had announced her presence in a very ungracious way to the very dangerous man. One thing she was certain about, things were about to get ugly for her. ★ faiLong story short, it was a bad time;

Tilly was sitting in the drawing-room of Lansdowne House, sipping tea and scanning through the pages of the latest Lady Whistledown. She had never been prone to gossip but there was something about the way that Whistledown put words together that made things interesting. She rarely wrote about the Marchioness and when she did, Tilly couldn't help but laugh at the shallow things that were mentioned once in a while. " I wish you could come to Lady Cowper's ball tonight. At least it wouldn't be so dull and boring. I hate those things." Tilly complained to Mirela, who had arrived promptly at four o'clock as they had settled the previous day. She put down the gossip parchment and continued: " Only thing that is keeping me curious is this rather scandalous information she supposedly has about one of the guests. Any idea who that could be?" There were many possibilites, Whistledown had many targets those days so taking a guess would be like a gambling night at a gentlemen's club. " As long as it is not about me, I don't have a problem with her. She seems to leave me alone most of the time, proof that I'm not as interesting as many people think." Tilly's gentle laugh filled the drawing room as she poured Mirela more tea. " You must help me get ready for this dreadful evening, please dear Mirela! But first, a penny for your thoughts."

12.Giving themselves a piercing Tilly walked out of the post office holding a small letter carefully folded in her right hand as if it was the most precious and rare piece of jewellery she ever owned. The red, white, blue and golden crest of Lansdowne engraved on the seal that closed it indicated it was correspondence from home, and by home it meant Sidmouth. Curious and impatient as she was, the young Marchioness opened the letter while she walked back to her London townhouse, located mere streets from where she was, and her cocoa colloured eyes quickly scanned the content looking for what she expected to be bad news. And indeed they were. The roof of the winter garden had finally collapsed and needed urgent repair, something she had been expecting since she had moved to the capital. Feeling a bit overwhelmed, Tilly decided to take a walk to clear her mind, trying not to focus on the stressful situation she had now in hands, but it took only one wrong turn for her to find herself on an unfamiliar street. She walked for a few more minutes, hoping to find a way back to a more familiar area, but the more she walked, the more lost she became. Frustration took over as she walked through a door that she thought to be the access to the inn. At least that was what the sign above it said! Perhaps she could find help there. But it all washed away like the waves wash the shore when she noticed the man in front of her, sitting in one of the wood benches of the empty place. Tilly gasped in surprise when the man pointed a needle to his right ear in what seemed to be an attempt to pierce it. He must have heard her, because she could see him look her way through the piece of mirror hanging from a beam and when their eyes locked, she felt a shiver running down her spine. " Forgive me." she said with a trembling voice, not wanting to upset the man. " I didn't mean to disturb you sir." To say Tilly was afraid would be an understatement, the young girl froze on her feet and hoped that she could live to tell the tale of that day. ★ faiThose who wander are, usually, lost;

Tilly walked along the crowded paths of the park, her mother's hand clasped tightly around her arm. The new Marchioness of Lansdowne was more concerned with the renovation of her new house than her own social life, but Lady Ramsbury insisted on taking a walk to show off her daughter to the society, something the beautiful Matilda was not very fond of. It was as if everyone saw her as a garden rose but all she wanted to be was a wild violet. It was, indeed, a poetic way of putting things in perspective. As they strolled, Tilly's eyes were drawn to the beautiful flowers blooming in the park, something she found ironic and put a slight smile on her face. Lady Ramsbury looked at her daughter's face hidden under the bonnet, trying to figure out the reason behind her sudden amusement but Tilly's mind was always too complex for a mother to understand. It didn't take long for the two women to notice the not so discreet stares and whispers from others that had been drawn by the curiosity that surrounded the new young Marchioness, yet it didn't seem to bother Lady Ramsbury, who would greet everyone with a polite and shiny smile. On the contrary, Tilly pretended not to see them, something she was quite good at. It would probably be seen as an act of impoliteness and paint her as a snob, as someone the mamas would not want around their sons. Good, because Tilly, and her money, didn't want anything to do with them either. Suddenly, an ungoverned landau barreled through the park, causing a commotion and drawing the attention of the nearby crowds. The accident was unexpected but welcomed, for it gave Tilly the opportunity to escape her mother's watchful eye and explore the park on her own. As she walked, Tilly couldn't help but feel a sense of unease about her upcoming debut. She knew it was expected of her as a young lady of her station, but the idea of being on display and judged by society made her nervous. She wondered if she would ever find someone who truly understood her and accepted her for who she was, rather than just seeing her as a wealthy heiress. She wished she still had her aunt to ask her those things, because the late Marchioness always seemed to have the answers to everything. Lost in thought, Tilly came back to reality when her poorly tied bonnet was lifted from her head and carried off by the late afternoon breeze. She gasped and tried to grab it, but it was already too high, spinning and twirling like a bird in flight. The bonnet flew higher and higher until it was just a speck against the blue sky, and then suddenly it dipped and descended rapidly towards the sparkling water of the lake. With a soft plop, it landed on the water's surface and began to float like a toy. "Perfect." she complained, crouching near the shore to try to retrieve it with her hand, but without success. ★ faiWho knows if she never showed up, what could've been. There goes the maddest woman this town has ever seen. She had a marvelous time ruinin' everything
