I'm not bound by Benedict truly felt for the man. He recalled all too clearly the expression that crossed Henry's features when he spoke of Alfred; how he had defended their love and spoke of the heartache that came with not being allowed to publicly express it. It had been . . . inspiring, to say the least. So to now see the man in such a state, truly caused Benedict's heart to ache for his . . . friend.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "You believed in the strength of love," he began to tell him. "There is no shame in holding this belief." Henry may believe himself a liar but Benedict knew in the earnest with which the artist had spoke of it . . . that he truly did believe it. That he truly held hope in it. It was just heartbreaking, that Alfred did not do the same. "And I hope, that it does not forever taint it." Taint his belief in love and his chance for happiness. He wanted that for Henry; the man deserved it. His eyes followed Henry as he went for the bottle of brandy, taking in the disheveled sight of him which only added to Benedict's sympathy and compassion for the man. When he passed him the bottle, Benedict silently decided not to drink from it but still held it in his hand. And then, Henry spoke.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ " . . . including being indecent with you." It was then that Benedict casually took a large gulp of the drink, the word ringing in his head and heart and knowing that it really should not affect him in such a way. Indecent. He understood what Henry meant of course and yet . . . surely, that is how others would describe it if they had known. His family. Friends. Society. Indecent. Yet something that may be considered to many as such . . . felt so incredibly . . . Benedict nonchalantly took another drink, trying to swallow back anything -- thoughts, emotions -- from flooding to the surface. He did after all, have a terrible poker face.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "Your actions did not deserve any such response," he assured him. Apart from the fact that Benedict was not a physically violent person . . . Henry did not deserve to be struck in the midst of his heartbreak. "I uh . . . " What did he even say? Henry spoke of not lying to Benedict yet, Benedict could not bring himself to be so honest with Henry. Nothing would come of it and it would surely, only cause Henry further pain.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Besides, he did not need the weight of Benedict's complicated emerging feelings to be added onto all that he was already going through. "I aimed to be there to offer support and comfort. And hope that my presence did not do the opposite. I would not wish for you to feel any added weight to what you are already experiencing." Honest words; ones that vocalized his thoughts just . . . conveniently leaving out anything to indicate how that kiss had affected Benedict.

I'm not bound by Benedict knew he was going to hear about it. The moment Anthony and Elizabeth returned and she pulled him aside . . . he knew. And the first question she asked him made him hope that his response would not cause her further upset. Had he known. "Not with enough time to tell you in advance," he told her honestly, an underlying tone of apology. Anthony had had a conversation with him about his intentions with Elizabeth. It was not exactly the first time someone questioned their relationship, but it was the first time Anthony brought it up in such a way. Benedict had been suspicious, but he knew his brother well enough that there was a motive for asking.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Benedict had to hold back an amused smile and a chuckle. He was unsure why he found humour in this situation . . . but he knew it would only fuel her reaction. "I believe it . . . sounds quite like Anthony," he said almost teasingly, before sobering his expression a little. "Did you accept?" He knew the answer to that but he could not help the tease in his voice, playing along with the situation. His brother could propose but he would not force her and yet . . . if he believed it was what their fathers would wish, then Benedict wondered just how much convincing Anthony was willing to attempt. Perhaps the true implications of the situation had not yet sunk in which, was why he could still make light of a situation that could potentially hold a more serious nature.

I'm not bound by To say that Benedict had not thought about last night would be quite the lie. He had thought about it, and thought about it . . . and thought about it some more. The kiss had ignited something in Benedict. Something he had not realized and yet, something that felt wonderful at the same time. All those gazes upon Henry, confusing his own mind and heart for it surely had not been desire or deeper, more intimate affections towards him.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ He had not understood himself . . . until they had kissed. But damned the timing of it all and it left Benedict with the understanding, the acceptance that he was forced to embrace that it was not him that Henry wanted. And yet, it had still sparked some sense of self realization within Benedict. Enough for sleep to elude him for most of the night. And then, Henry had called him over. Truth be told, Benedict thought to decline the invitation. But . . . he could not be a coward. He could not ignore or avoid Henry forever. Nor, did he want to. He supposed, it was better to have Henry in his life as a friend, than not at all. Yet, not even certain as how to define what his heart seemed to be filled with. All from a mere kiss.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ He readied himself, feeling a strange sense of nervousness consuming him. As he arrived, and was announced, he forced his body to remain still so not to pace nervously. He leaned against the wall, then stood straight. He his hands in his pockets, then took them out. Fortunately, it was not long until he was escorted to where Henry was. Seeing Henry in this state of . . . well, a state that was very unlike Henry, made Benedict both wish to comfort him and yet, caused his heart to throb even more. A small smile formed on his lips as he expressed gratitude for accepting his invitation, taking the gestured seat to sit. "Granville," he greeted in return.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "I wished to see how you were faring after last night." A sudden thought horrified him . . . what if Henry did not recall what had happened? And yet, would that be so terrible? Would it not save them the conversation? Or were they just to pretend it did not occur. With how heavy Benedict's heart was beating, he was surprised it did not burst out of his chest. "Please, no apology is necessary. I, completely understand." Benedict had to ensure not make this an awkward encounter. He had to bite back whatever threatened to be blurting by an unguarded mind. "How do you feel?" A question with genuine concern over the well being of his . . . friend.

I'm not bound by As each season came, his mother's insistence intensified. Fortunately, it was not only targeted towards him, but also -- and perhaps primarily -- his elder brother. Of course, Anthony had made no declaration of his intention marry . . . and neither had Benedict. That however, did not deter their mother nor other mamas from broaching the subject. And balls such as these was the prime environment for such conversations to take place. Benedict supposed that once Daphne came out, the attention would be shifted towards her but until then . . . Benedict took advantage of his position as second son. After all, the title of Viscountess was far more tempting for mamas and their daughters, so he knew that it was times such as these that his position blended him in the background. Well, as much of a background as Bridgertons could remain.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈
So upon arrival, Benedict swiftly parted ways from his mother's side. He often spent time in these events conversing with Wallflowers -- something his mother had instilled in her sons -- or spending time with those that would not inspire gossips and talks among the ton -- Lady Danbury being most favorable company. However, the arrival of another family captured his interest as his eyes laid upon the three of them. He had not seen them since the tragic loss of the marchioness, and friends with her daughter . . . immediately prompted Benedict to approach.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈
"My Lord," he said, lowering his head in respects to Charles, then greeting his son before he lay his eyes upon Elizabeth. He knew his dear friend well enough to recognize her expression, to know that this was perhaps the last place she wished to be. After a brief exchange between the men, Benedict finally asked what was on his mind. "If I may, I would kindly ask your permission to escort Lady Elizabeth around the room." Despite their close nature, Benedict was not one to overlook formality, politeness and basic respect when it came to spending time with one of his closest friends. After all, he had sisters himself and knew that he would hope for the same courtesy.

I'm not bound by When Frannie sat back down, indicating that she would remain here for at least a bit longer, Benedict stepped further into the room, not wanting her to be alone. Taking off his coat to get more comfortable and setting it on the side, he sat down next to her. "Would you like to share such thoughts?" He offered. "Perhaps talking about them, will help make sense of it." He knew of course that talking sometimes helped certain situations. It was after all, one of the many reasons that accounted for the Bridgerton family being so close. They shared their thoughts and feelings with one another. Had strong communication. Well, some of them . . . as they grew older Benedict imagined that was starting to change.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Himself included in such things. She then diverted the subject from herself to him, asking where he had been, and suggesting she was with a lady. Ah yes, she was certainly right about that; their mother would quite like it, even if she questioned the late hour he spent in her company. "I was visiting a friend," he told her, which . . . was true since Henry after all, was indeed a dear friend. He just, would not go into the details of what kind of party the artist held at his residence. "Sorry to disappoint," he added on with a bit of a joking tone when it came to being in the company of a lady. While it was true that such parties held more . . . pleasurable activities that he partook in, it was hardly the kind to divulge as it would not lead to marriage. And, he would rather maintain his sister's innocence in such things.

I'm not bound by Benedict was not one to frequent the dance floor, all too aware of the watchful eyes that befell any man and woman who shared a dance -- especially if it was for the first time. But today he had asked Lady Danbury to dance -- which, was certainly not a first time at all. Her company was rather enjoyable, the pair making each other laugh -- even if it was at his expense as she teased him so. As he was dancing with her, he happened to look at the crowd, his eyes locking with the middle Featherington sister as she seemed to be motioning to something.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Curiosity peaked in the second son and the dance was over, he politely excused himself to follow her out through the doors and into the gardens. Truthfully, he wished to make sure she was alright and that there was nothing troubling her. That, and of course the gentleman in him did not wish for an unescorted woman to be wandering about. There could be men with . . . less gentlemanly thoughts. As he approached her, he felt first the light drizzle of rain before it became a heavier downpour. "Come!" He called, extending his hand for her to take to help her through the pouring rain. "Let us get you out of the rain," he added. He would have offered his jacket to help warm her but it too was wet. The last thing he wanted was for her to catch a cold or flu from such weather conditions.

I'm not bound by Benedict knew this was mostly his fault for not locking the door, and as his body painfully came to terms with the fact that he would find no release . . . the height of annoyance was starting to wane. While still somewhat present, it was not so much on the surface. Especially when she spoke of them being friends. Well, damn. It would always seem that his sisters knew how to tug at his heart, appealing to what would result in the guilt of an older brother.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ But . . . alas, it did seem as if they were all growing up. For Benedict knew that he had more secrets than he cared to admit. His status as second son affording him more . . . liberties and freedoms to go about his business. But in moments such as this when so clearly caught, it was difficult to deny. His body was starting to relax a little as he watched her, while knowing she was trying to get him to divulge his own secrets . . . did not fail to recognize that surely, it goes both ways.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "Even friends have secrets from one another, do they not?" He asked her teasingly, his expression softening a little, a bit of a smile upon his face. "But very well, Daff," he continued. "I may be keeping a secret--" -- Or two, or three -- "But surely, so are you," he playfully accused. "A deal then. Secret for a secret." That was after all, only fair. For he was quite curious about what kept his sister up at his late hour and . . . surely, she had secrets of her own.

I'm not bound by It was rather interesting indeed, that Marina Thompson would be standing by herself when she seemed a far cry from a Wallflower. Benedict was surprised that his own brother -- who had previously inquired about her -- was not even making a move at such an opportune moment. Quite a curious thing indeed. But whether it was due to his mother having instilled this in him, or it was his own conscience -- or both -- he did not quite like the sight of a woman who was standing by herself.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ So Benedict politely excused himself from current company, and made his way over to where she stood. "Miss Thompson," he greeted with a smile. Truthfully, Benedict did not mind conversing with young women . . . so long as eager mamas were not right around the corner -- which was often the case. "How are you enjoying your evening?" He asked her with genuine interest.

I'm not bound by Benedict didn't need to look at his mother to practically feel her eyes upon him. Her hopes for him to find a wife were indeed high, but she also ensured he did not remain idle -- or as elusive as he would have liked -- at such events. Where Colin enjoyed flirting with any pretty woman, their mother often encouraged her sons to ask a Wallflower to dance, or any woman who did not seem to have a constant stream of men in their company. And the Featheringtons truly had a special place in their hearts. It was truly such a shame that they were not more recognized. Were their mother not so . . . well, intense then perhaps they would indeed stand a chance. After all, they were each beautiful, fine young women.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ So when he saw Philipa standing on her own, Benedict just knew that his mother was watching him. Though he supposed it was more in good conscience that he approached her, rather than fear of the repercussions. Once they started dancing however, he knew it was not bad at all. She was rather pleasant company and the two of them seemed to effortlessly fall into a rhythm, as well as conversation. Benedict found himself quite enjoying the exchange, though it was more short lived than expected. For one moment he was turning her and the next, she was on the ground.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ "Miss Featherington," he said, voice calm but holding a tone of concern as he crouched next to her. "Are you alright?" Though as his eyes scanned over her, he took notice of the fact that she was clutching her ankle. "Do you think you can walk?" He asked her, knowing that either he would offer his support to help her walk out of the dancing hall . . . or she may have to be carried out. And as he felt responsible for it . . . well, he was going to ensure she was cared for.

I'm not bound by Benedict had gotten home rather late from one of Granville's parties. Being introduced in such a part of society had Benedict returning as much as he could. Great company. No judgement. And . . . the freedom to be oneself. Of course, such fun often led to late hours so he was quietly entering the house, ensuring not to wake anyone so to avoid questions pertaining to his whereabouts. The household staff also seemed asleep which was even better. But as he was making his way down the hall, he saw a flicker of light coming from the library and as he drew closer, his eyes rested on Francesca.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ He stood in the threshold of the door, watching her for a moment as she did not seem to notice his presence. "Francesca," he both greeted and questioned . . . his words clearly alarmed her. Her reaction caused him to smirk though at startling his little sister. She explained that she couldn't seem, as he walked into the library. "My apologies," he said, still smiling at her reaction. "Is something troubling you?" He asked, wondering if there was something keeping her up.
