Sophie wished that she remembered her mother, or more of her grandmother then being dropped off. She did not however, know anything about them. She could not ask her father for details about them, as he had not been an affectionate man and had to approach about such things. So indeed, she'd make her own memories.
Today, she was making a memory of helping her son learn to talk down by the edge of the lake in the warm summer afternoon. Bending down, she was holding him by his little hands as she balanced on unsteady legs and looked around. "Benedict! Call his name!" She yelled to her husband, hoping that it would make their son try to talk to his father.
Their son, Charles, had begun to stand while holding on to things, and try to walk just the other week. Sophie decided then that it meant he would be walking within days! So since a week had gone by, she was trill trying to help him along. She imagined that father and son were more interested in swimming while she sat on a rock near by, however he Charles wanted to swim he would need to walk to do it!

I'm not bound by It was a rather curious thing . . . that so many days could be deemed quite perfect ones. But alas, today marked another. Benedict and his wife and son were enjoying the beautiful summer weather, with a motive in mind to encourage their son to walk. He was so close to taking those few steps in his own and Benedict just knew the moment would be upon them soon. Until then, they enjoyed the attempts, and even Charles found amusement in trying to stand up, before plopping back down on the ground with a laugh.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ He was such a joyful, happy child and Benedict could not hold any more pride for his son, practically bursting with it. Benedict had removed his shirt, and made his way into the water, while his son walked along the edge with Sophie support. He stood a bit of distance away, still in sight, and holding out his hands, he smiled at his little boy. "Charles," he called with a melodic tone to his voice. "Come on," he encouraged. "Come to papa," he added on, his voice animated to match his expression of encouragement.

Her son moved his chubby legs to try to walk toward his father, and she held on to his hands. Laughing the young boy stomped his feet near the water, splashing up some of the water. Slowly, Sophie opened her fingers to let him try to walk. Sophie waited until her son only held on to one finger from each hand until she pulled it away!
"He is walking!" She gasped, as their baby boy took one step, followed by a shaky second, and finally a shaken fumble toward the shallow water's edge. Since she was not far from him, it was easy to catch her son before he fell. "So close!" She praised, before looking over at her husband. Admiring his shirtless appearance as he was intending to swim. "And yet, not close enough," this time referring to how far he was from her.
