He asked her about what kept her awake, and it was a different tone than he used with her. Gone was the charm, and there was something else there. Something that made her want to tell him her secrets. Something that asked her to trust him. She wanted too. She wanted to tell him, and let him see her. She wanted to let him be strong for her--but Sophie was not sure she knew how to do that. She had been all she had for so long. Fighting to stay afloat in her own storm. "Just dreams." She half gave him, not used to saying more.
She much rather focus on his other words. "You wish to learn to cook?" She repeated and even began to almost smile with the words. Though she wondered about the time when she would not be there. Perhaps she was reading too much into them? Or did she only now realize she liked his words that hinted toward years to come and they were still around each other?
Looking around the kitchen for something easy to show him, she settled on some meat and cheese. It was not cooking, but it would fill him better than teaching him to make a stew. "Would it not be easier to get some meat and cheese for you to add to bread?" She offered, wondering if he really wanted to know how to cook or if he just wanted to know how to get food without waking others? The idea of him cooking was charming, but she did not know if it was practical.

"Envy my husband," Sophie repeated softly, laughing them out more than speaking them, as she found his words amusing. "I shall tell him you find him so." She returned the teased, finding it humorous to talk in pretend with him. She could not imagine marrying any one but him, but if she had then these words would be spoken in a much different tone.
He teased her about swimming, and Sophie lifted her lace gloved hand and covered her face for a moment. "Did you not think I too brazen?" She countered, not admitting she was spying but knowing that she did linger, drawn in by the sight of him. She had never seen such a man before, and to see one bare in all aspects had been shocking--and educational . . . and . . . well she liked it. Looking away had not happened. Even if she had known she needed too. "I have often wondered how you knew it was I." She asked, looking into his face and smiling. No longer timid to ask him as they were now married, and she knew everything had found its place. She had found her place.
The idea of swimming with him brought a blush to her cheeks. It was too brazen but at the same time . . . she wanted it. She wanted it with him. "Perhaps soon then." She suggested. "Though I do not know how to swim. I have never been in water deeper than my knees."

Meeting him there near the door, Sophie paused as he entered. With each step he took toward her, her smile grew slightly bigger, brighter, happier--until it was gone. Replaced by his lips and his kiss. Replaced by the heat of him, and the taste of him. She had to stretch up on her toes to grow even a little close to his height, but it did not stop her from trying to get closer to him.
"I have missed you," She whispered against his lips, resting her face against his while trying to catch her breath. It was not something she was ever able to completely do around him. He stole it so easy with every touch.
Her fingers moved to touch his cheek, and feel him. He was so devastatingly handsome. How did the woman of the ton not notice the moment he stepped away? He had this energy that stole her mind and gaze just by existing. "Can you stay?" She asked, knowing some nights he could disappear and no one would be the wiser, and some nights he only had a few hours. Stolen moments, stolen nights.

It was a good day he admitted, and it was then Sophie knew what was different. He was . . . happy. He looked so happy. It was in the way he grinned down at her, and in the way he spoke. It was unlike him to be so open and on display. The way he was looking at her made her belly tighten, and her breathing slow. He could do that just by looking at her.
"sweet Sophie?" The use of her name, made her wish this moment was different. That she was not whom she was, and he was anyone but whom he was. That she could lean in and just be with him. "For mine has become even better being in your luminating presence!" Blinking up at him, she slowly smiled. Not a bright one, but a hesitant 'I am unable to stop myself from smiling around you and I know I need to hide it' smile.
"Someone will hear you." She reminded him, knowing this was not a place for him to call her sweet, and speak such words to her. No matter how nice they were to hear. "This is your mother's home." A reminder they might both need since she enjoyed the words he spoke as well.

He gave her credit where credit was not due. Sophie playfully swatted his solder, while smiling down at it. "It is not I who paints magic on a canvas. It is you." A talent he had from before he lost his memory years ago. She wondered if that had been his profession before.
Tomorrow would be a quick turn around. Yet she knew nobles cared not for the urgency they demand. If this noble wanted it, they cared not for any time it took. "Tomorrow it is then." She agreed, knowing they would make it work, in the same way they had made their lives work--together.
"I shall arrange for the house to be empty, and for some food for the travel." She knew her husband would find the manner for them to travel. Be it walking part of the way, or purchasing a ticket in a stage coach. He also would find a place for them to stay within their means. "I shall also pack you a bag, so you only need to worry about your brushes." That way he could collect any paints or brushes he might need to bring with him. Though he might be able to purchase a few new things in the city.

Sophia watched him as he gave his name, and found herself with an easy smile at the name he gave. She knew that in her world, one of rules and nobles, that he sounds has introduced himself as Mr. Bridgerton. However, she liked that he gave his name. That she knew something about him, that she shouldn't have known right away. Even if it was just a name. "Mr. Bridgerton," Benedict. She repeated in acknowledgment.
He moved over to the area where he would world, and Sophia trailed slowly behind him--mindful to keep the proper distance--while also looking over the area. "Convey?" She asked with open curiosity. "I was unable aware that paintings did such a thing." She had seen paintings of people but they always looked . . . stoic. Her father always looked as he did. Still and powerful, and untouchable.
Sophia had ended up near where she imagined she was supposed to sit for hours, unmoving while he painted her. She turned to look at Benedict. She knew better than to call him that aloud, but her mind enjoyed it. It was bold, and daring, and a small rule she was breaking--if only in her mind.
The light was toward her, which was put in in partial shadow, but she still could see his face. "How does one convey something in a painting that does not move?" It was not condensing, but curiosity, and a little bewilderment that was in her face and tone. She honestly wanted to know.

Sophia stood there while her maid dressed her in the dress her step-mother had picked out for her to wear for the painting her father wanted done of her. It was not faltering, but she knew better then to argue. In truth, she was just excited about getting her first painting done!
Once she was ready, her step mother took her toward the room with the best light. Sophia walked in behind her and looked for the painter. He was young! That surprised her. She had expected an old man who might have been closer to her father's age. However, this man was still in his prime, and handsome too. It made her smile softly as the last part of her thoughts crossed her mind.
Meanwhile, her step-mother was giving directions. She wanted something proper, and to make Sophia look pretty. Sophia did not miss the way her step-mother said to 'embellish' the prettiness. You see, Sophia was a reminder that her father had married before her step mother. In front of her father, her step-family was nice but distance. However when he was away they were less so. Sophia was not bothered. She knew that soon enough she would be married and away from this.
When her step-mother left without introducing them (as if she either did not see the need, or did not see either of them important enough to introduce) Sophia took a few steps closer. "I'm Lady Gunningworth." Daughter of the Earl of Penwood. Though he already knew that, and Sophia did not think it necessary to re-inform him of that.

She could climb on his lap. Forget the dress and the paint--she could do it. Yet she knew that replacing the dress would be pointless coin wasted, but she was so tempted. It would be simple to climb over his legs and let the kiss take them away. And yet, her husband was smarter than she, and pulled himself away.
He told her that he had news. It was enough to pull her from her passionate thoughts and back into the moment, and the morning. He'd been called to . . MAYFAIR? Sophie exhaled softly and her hands lifted to his cheeks. "That is incredible!" She told him, her voice held the excitement and proudness that she felt. Bending down the lightly kissed his lips once more. "You have finally caught the attention your work deserves!"
Mayfair! How grand! It was so far away, and it was . . . in . . . London. The city. With the nobles. With her step-mother. Sophie held her smile, but she knew that this would be a conversation they would need to have. He knew of her past. And yet, it was long ago. And maybe with a husband she would be safer. Maybe they would not be anywhere near her step-family. Bending to kiss him again, she pulled back and smiled down at him. She would not ruin this moment for him with her fears.
"When?" She asked, reaching up to brush some of his hair back from his handsome face.

Sophie was walking down the hall with a little bit of mending in her hands that she was returning to the owner, when she she looked up and saw him. Benedict. Her breathing deepened at just the sight of him, and she tried to mentally brace herself for the words that he would give her today. It was hard to turn him away. It was ahrd to do this for him. She had to protect him from---from--What did he say?
Sophie slowed her steps and came to a soft stop as she stared up at his face with confusion, and curiosity. His words, as well as his volume, were different. His mannerisms were off. And yet she did not feel as if she knew him well enough to voice it right away. Perhaps this was a mood of his? Yet it did not feel that way.
"Good day?" She greeted, looking past him, and then behind her to assure herself they were alone. Glacing back to him, Sophie tightened her grip on the sewing in order to not reach out to him.

Leave it to her beloved to be able to make their past something light and teasable. "You should do well to remember, sir, that I am now a married woman." She teased him in return. How wonderful that there was nothing between them now. Not her status or reservations about causing a scandal. Just Sophie. Just Ben. Just love. .
He asked about how she planned to tire him, and Sophie could only look into his eyes as she tried to think of something scandaless to day, but she had not known of the passions until recently. She could only think of what they had already done, and know that soon her husband would help her explore the more that there could be.
And yet, once again, leave it to him to bring a laugh to her lips, and a blush to her cheeks. "I still say I was not spying." She pointlessly insisted. And yet, could not look away from him. "Do you think we could?" The idea of swimming naked with him. She wanted that too.

It was well after midnight. Everyone was sleeping in the house. Since it was warm for this time of year, most rooms did not even have a fire lit to give some light. It left the house lit only by the unusually bright moon and stars in the sky. Sophie thought it should be raining. It should be a cold raining night, filled with thunder and wind. That would at least be fitting for her thoughts.
For tonight she needed to leave the house. She needed to once again disappear into the night. Only the first time it had been to escape from her step-mother. And the second was to escape drunken entitled men. And this time . . . this time hurt the worst. This time might break her. Might destroy her. Because this time she was leaving to protect the man she loved.
Knowing she could leave him with no explanation, Sophie had a letter for him. Only she dare not try to leave it for him. If he found her leaving it then he would not let her go. She knew he would not. She knew that Benedict would fight for her, and she feared that he would win. Only she knew that if she stayed it would ruin him. She had learned that her step-mother had summoned the police over the shoe clip. She would be arrested, and he would be humiliated for loving not only a 'thief' (even if she was innocent, who would believe her?) and a child born out of wedlock.
So instead of risking leaving it for Benedict, she turned to his favorite sister. Slipping into Eloise's room, Sophie walked quietly toward the bed, trying to wipe away the tears that would not stop falling. "Miss Bridgerton?" She whispered, once twice, three times with no answer. "MISS BRIDGERTON!" She whispered louder trying to wake the girl.
Tagged: @eloisebridgerton It was so hard to decide if E should go to S or if S should go to E in tears! I flipped a coin. xoxox

Life was beautiful. And there was nothing more she wanted from it.
Once, Sophie had thought life was about surviving, but not any more. She had come to love the man she was now calling husband. Come to love his quirks, and ideals. Even if loving him still sometimes scares her. Sometimes woke her from sleep.
You see, Sophie sometimes feared their love was on borrowed time. Yet she planned on making every ounce of time she had with him to best. She hid these feelings well, and it was easy to do so with the happiness that she found. It was easy to forget the fear, and unease. For days and weeks at a time even. Sometimes even for months. She was happy. He was happy. And it was enough.
Their love had begun five years ago when he had walked into the village she was working in. She had tried working in noble homes but the men there felt that they could take anything they pleased--even her. She had run far from the memories of them trying to force her. It was how she had found work in the village, not far from both the sea and the mountains. Sometime after, he walked into the village. It was easy to see he had been through something. His clothes had been well worn and ragged. As he walked down the dirt path through town he had fainted. The local doctor said it was from both being ill, injured, and from exhaustion.
Sophie had helped nurse him back to health. Once he awakened, he had no memory of how he was injured or where he had been . . . or who he was. It took him a few weeks to be able to climb from bed, and a short time after that to heal from his injuries. He picked a name that seemed familiar to him. Over the time they spent together, Sophie and him grew fond of each other. Fall in love. He was charming and particular. Gallant almost. He found peace in drawing, even though there was little money in it. She found peace in him. He sometimes drew faces, but did not know the names to give them. He sometimes drew her. And sometimes the world around them. Passing merchants often bought the drawings and paintings. Sometimes selling them for good money.
After years had passed, they gave up on his memory returning, and built a life together. Married. Make love. Found a house to one day have children in. Life was beautiful. And she wanted nothing more from it. Even if she feared his memory would return and he would be taken from her. Or he would have a wife. Or he would forget her. The happiness he gave her kept these thoughts at bay.
Walking up behind him while he painted, Sophie leaned in to kiss him. A deep and happy kiss.

Mondern AU Bio
Sophie was born to a loving mother, and a father who wanted nothing to do with her. However when her mother died, her father let her come live with him and his family. She never really fit in with them. She was 8 when he died and her new step-mother was all she had left. She ended up working in the house. At first it was called chores, but as she got older she was told the work she did payed for her place to live.
When she turned 18 she stayed as she had no where else to go. That lasted only 2 years as she left as soon as she could . . . but not before stealing her step mother's fancy silver dress for a night out at an upper class masked ball. Once her step-mother found out she said Sophie had ruined the expensive dress and called the police. Sophie left before they could come and never saw that family again.
Sophie is working as a cleaner in a hotel while trying to attend college. She loved the gossip column, and twitter. She has no idea what she wants out of life, but she is excited to find it.
