Kate held her baby and walked slowly around the room, a soft wordless song on her lips. She loved her daughter. How many times had she teased Anthony about having a daughter--that it was his job to give her one. She had teased him with their second son, and by the time she grew with child for a third time, she had teased him endlessly about it.
Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned to smile at her her husband. Seeing Benedict there made her smile turn sad. Oh yes. Sometimes--just for a moment--she forgot that she was a widow, and not a wife.
Blinking down at her daughter she fought the tears that wanted to come. "I miss moments like this more than anything." Seven months and it still killed her a little bit every day. Anthony had gone with a friend to look into inventing in a shipping yard. They were meant to take a ship out to see how it worked, and how the workers were treated. The ship went down in a unseen storm six months before their daughter was born. While a few men had been found in the waters, most of the 50 other men were never found.

I'm not bound by There were no words to describe the last few months. The first time the Bridgerton family had been struck with devastating news was when their father, Edmund had died. It had taken everyone time to recover -- perhaps they never fully would heal -- but being surrounded by the love and support of their entire large family, had helped. But seven months ago, would mark the second piece of devastating news . . . in that Anthony Bridgerton had been lost at sea. The search had immediately commenced, and day after day, came the disappointing news of no news.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ The Bridgerton family was hopeful, but days rolled into weeks, and weeks into months. Yet, Benedict had refused to give up that hope. To the point where he refused the title that others tried to bestow upon him: Viscount. He would merely retort, saying in a voice far sterner that Benedict used, saying that his brother was the Viscount. That, seemed to silence others even when they attempted to offer condolences. For no one would push a man by stating that their brother was dead. No one would push him, or any Bridgerton for that matter, when they saw such a side to them. Benedict and Sophie had moved back to their family estate immediately upon receiving this news, knowing that he could not be absent from London but also . . . for Kate. To help her and the children through these difficult times. To be there for her, for their mother, and the other siblings that remained.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ Each day brought with it the hope for some good news for it seemed, no one was ready to give up . . . no matter how weary they were. Making his way to where he heard Kate, he paused at the threshold as she looked at him. He could see the change in her expression, and knew the heartbreaking cause for it. What he wouldn't give to switch places with his brother so that he may be here, home, and heading the family in a way that Benedict knew he could never. He deserved to see his daughter, and watch his sons grow old. "I know," he whispered in a barley audible voice though knew she could hear him, as he held the same sadness to his voice.
◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ ◈ After another pause, Benedict approached Kate, peering down at the small baby in her arms. "She grows bigger and stronger each day," he said softly, with a small smile. The shock and devastating news that Kate had received so many months into her pregnancy had caused her to have the baby earlier than expected. As a result, she was born quite small, and to the point where thee doctors did not believe she would survive. But, she was a Bridgerton and thus, had a fighting spirit. How glad everyone was that such professionals and so called experts in their field, were so drastically wrong.
