i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony tried to play it calm, cool, collected. The family was gathering at Aubrey Hall and with all the siblings present, would come the inevitable game of Pall Mall. This time, Kate was not here as their guest . . . but rather, his wife. And so, pleasantries were out the window -- not that he had been too kind to her the last time they played. This time however, there were even less restraints. He had every intention of beating her, and he would do so with the mallet that she'd stolen from him last time -- not technically but still. HIS mallet. One that he would claim. But, it seemed he was not the only one of such a mind.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Him and Kate had practically raced there, both gripping the mallet. The competition turned to teasing. The teasing turned to flirtation. And the flirtation led to . . . well, one did not have to wonder for long. The shed door was just barley closed, and he knew the risk of any of his family members coming in his great. But it was not enough to stop him. His desire for Kate was quite insatiable and the playful banter -- something that existed so easily between them -- added a heat and intensity to the physical intimacy. Anthony currently had his wife pressed against the wall of the shed, moaning into the kiss and he devoured her lips, his hands scrambling to lift her dress.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ The mallet was long forgotten as it had fallen somewhere amidst their actions and Anthony in this moment, could not care less. All that he could think of was how much he wanted, and needed his wife. As one hand bunched up her dress, the other went to the fastening of his trousers, hurriedly and impatiently undoing them, as he bit her bottom lip, sucking it between his own. He didn't even wait to full lower them, he only need free enough of himself before he guided his length to her, and without a moment's hesitancy, pushed his hips forward as he let out a grunt of pleasure, fill her completely in one powerful thrust.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU He could see her own surprise and the calm, confident way that she stated that this was her home too . . . that she and her children lived here . . . only fueled his fear. He was becoming increasingly scared. Terrified. That was when he further realized what she said: eight years. The color drained from his face, lips parted in shock. Eight years. He was . . . missing eight years of his life. For no matter how much he wanted to deny it, there was a strength in her statement. One that left little room for doubt, even if he kept trying to push it away. Kept telling her that it was untrue. Eight years.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Was he truly forgetting that much? He felt sick. Sick over the thought of not remembering getting married, having children . . . who his wife was, who his children were. He staggered back not to get away from her, but more as an involuntary action as the news struck him like a pile of stones. His eyes darted around, trying to make sense of this all. Trying to understand how this was even possible. Forgetting a few months was one thing: but eight years. That was an entirely different matter. An entirely different tragedy. "I don't remember," he breathed, unsure if she even heard him. An admittance full of fear, feeling his heart ache within his chest and the world spin. His stretched out his arm to brace himself against the wall. He had a wife and children and . . . he didn't remember a damn thing.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU He could not help but smile as she spoke of not having expected him so soon, but the part that brought forth the expression was when she spoke of how she would have not ordered the bath. "And why wouldn't you have?" He asked her playfully, somewhat rhetorically. "Far be it from me to stop you from enjoying it," he added on, unable to resist the urge to kiss her skin again.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Especially when she was nude, standing there in all her perfection. Him standing behind her completely clothed. Something that he hoped to rectify soon. "Or perhaps . . . " He began to say, voice trailing off only to kiss along her shoulder, one hand that was wrapped around her, moving up her chest to cup her breast, massaging it in his palm. "We could enjoy it together," he finished.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU "I am your wife."
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Anthony practically scoffed at the revelation; the immediate reaction to hearing something so ridiculous! But really, it was a cover up for deep, deep down . . . it made sense. But he was not yet ready to recognize that. He was not married. He . . . had not even declared his intentions to marry! "That is preposterous," he argued. "I have no wife. I have no children." He did not even know a Kate! "You Miss . . . " Bloody hell he didn't even know her last name. "Kate." Miss Kate. That sounded almost as ridiculous as her claiming to be his wife. "Are spouting nonsense." And he could not bare to hear anymore . . . out of fear that it could be true.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He had been struggling to piece together parts of his life, his absence having been for seven months but . . . if he truly took a moment to acknowledge it, the house looked different. Everything felt different. Yet, how could he forget something so extreme as having a wife and . . . children. Not even a child, but more than one! The humiliation associated with that was too grand, and if Anthony had not been overwhelmed before -- which, he had been -- well, he felt as if he was drowning in the water all over again. "Get out of my house," he demanded. He wanted her gone. He wanted her to leave. He . . . suddenly felt like he didn't even know who he was anymore. And that, above all else, terrified him.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU She was following him. And why, he did not know. Certainly she would not join him in his room. It was bad enough that she touched him and he did not even know who she was. "I know where my room is, you needn't follow me." He knew his tone was short and he also knew, she was undeserving of it. He was being defensive to cover up his . . . frustration. That he didn't know who she was. And so he was holding on to the one piece of knowledge he did seem to remember and know: the location of his room in a home that he had practically grown up in.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ It was lucky they reached the top of the steps when she asked about wanting to see his children. That, made him freeze and also made it impossible to carry on his façade that he was. For he did not even think of the words before they escaped him. "My what?" He demanded. He may have been able to play off not knowing her but this . . . her telling him of his children . . . that was not something he could even pretend to understand. "What are you saying?" He further demanded, emotion strong in his tone and not the touched and sentimental kind. One that held . . . anger. Annoyance. And then he finally could not hold it in any longer. "Who the hell are you?" As if she had struck some sort of nerve, claiming he had children! Surely, he would remember that . . . wouldn't he?

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU She told him to get out and . . . he should have expected that. It was nothing less than he deserved. He had wronged her, nearly defiled her. And then refused to even consider proposing. Hell, he was surprised that she hadn't slapped him right then and there. But . . . he had come here with a purpose and even though she may hate him, and want nothing to do with him, he still needed to fulfil it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He gave a short nod in compliance but, perhaps not to the extent she may have demanded. "I will be waiting outside the door for when you are ready. And then, once I find my brother, we will all leave this party." This . . . ridiculously, scandalous party and yet, the hypocrisy was not lost in Anthony's mind for he had perhaps added to the scandal with what he had done -- and almost done -- with Kate. After all, it was as they both had said and agreed: he had come here for her. And he intended to leave with her.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony often carried himself with confidence, projecting that air of authority and certainty about him. Though inside, he had always struggled with his position. And so, he hated this. Hated having no idea what was going on or who this woman was. She spoke to him so casually . . . spoke and touched him so intimately. Yet, he hadn't the faintest idea who she was. She spoke of the boys in the garden and the way she said it, made him doubtful that she was referring to Gregory or Colin. Violet, was really the only name he recognized and there was a brief gleam of relief quickly passing over his features, diminished only when she brought a hand to his face. Who the hell was this woman?! He desperately searched his mind for something . . . anything. Any sort of explanation or indication.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ She spoke of children and how they missed him and . . . Anthony felt dizzy from all the confusion. All he wanted was to see someone he knew. Someone he recognized. And apparently, his family members were all absent. The only other person he could think to go to that perhaps would help him . . . was Siena. She put her forehead on his chest and he knew he could let this continue. He could not bare this and it was causing him to get increasingly frustrated. So once more, he brought his hands to her shoulders and moved her back to place distance between them once more. "I should like to go to my room," he told her. Before she had the chance to say anything else, not even considering the possibility that she may follow, he walked passed her, knowing there was only so long he could carry on a conversation with this woman who he did not know . . . yet who seemed to know him quite well.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU It was certainly a good thing that he was not facing her, for her words caused him to clench his jaw as the subject became more difficult to explain. "You did not," he told her flatly, when she asked if she misunderstood. "I did," he answered when she asked -- or said -- that she thought he had come for her. Neither confirmation truly answered her questions, of that, Anthony was quite aware. But he was not sure how else to respond to it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He was not sure how he could elaborate without revealing his deepest secret that he had never breathed to anyone before. It had been why he lived his life the way he did, why he could never marry anyone that he could love. And Kate . . . well, it would be far too easy to love her. To fall in love with her. She was everything he desired, physically and emotionally. And everything that he could not allow himself to have. For the inevitable and undeniable joy that could be found with her . . . would result in the same intensity of devastation and tragedy.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Opening his eyes, he straightened himself, knowing he had to be direct with her. Fixing his shirt a little he turned to face her, no longer able to be the coward. Even if that was easier but then again . . . nothing about this was easy. Not in the slightest. And so, he faced her while adding further clarity to his words; words that perhaps they both already knew but yet, still needed to be said. "We cannot marry."

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU There were many things that could be said about Kate, but her being a fool was certainly not one of them. So even Anthony knew that surely she knew, there was no way he was allowing her to leave here without an explanation. As she moved to the door, Anthony stood firmly in place, blocking her exit. As if she held any more doubt, he stepped forward, causing her to push back a little as he closed the door behind him, now making an exit even more difficult, if not impossible.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "We both know you are not going to go that easily," he told her, vocalizing -- and solidifying -- his earlier thoughts. "What were you searching for, in my study," he demanded, adding the part about his study as that was exactly what it was. She was rummaging through his personal belongings as if she owned the place and so, he was not stepping aside until she told him what exactly it was that she was searching for. Clearly she had not found it but that was not due to any lack of trying.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony was about to say something, or do something . . . or at least encourage someone else to, when a woman emerged and joined the scene. She was clad in a fine gown, well styled and of high quality, indicating her noble status. And, she was indeed beautiful. But that was not what he was fixed on upon noticing her. It was the look in her eyes. There was something about it that both made his heart race and feel unsettled at the same time. As if that had not been enough, she came rushing towards him and put her arms around him in a hug. Speaking to him as if she knew him. Embracing him as if she knew him. Looking at him as if she knew him.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Anthony just froze, unsure how to react. He would have thought that perhaps he was at the wrong house but no. He knew this was his home, even though his family was no where in sight. Only this unfamiliar woman and yet . . . there was a strange sense of comfort in her embrace. Not enough for Anthony to let it linger for too long. Confusion taking over all else. So he moved his hands to either of her arms to gently pull them down from where they were wrapped around him, and took a step back from her, letting go of her arms when there was appropriate distance between them. "Where . . . " Was anyone?! His mother, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, Hyacinth . . . literally anyone of whom he recognized. "Where is my family?" Was the only way he knew how to put it in all his confusion and uncertainty.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU It took everything in Anthony to stop. And stopping, was not due to any lack of desire. He wanted her. Badly. More so than he ever cared to admit . . . perhaps more so than he even realized until he'd kissed her so fiercly. But there were unfortunately things that were stronger than this desire. Honor. And fear. Fear . . . that led to reasons why he could never, ever marry her. Honor . . . because had he gone any further, he would have been left with no other choice. Though they had not been caught or seen in such a state, both of them would know. And he could not bare the thought of doing that to her. He made sure her legs were stable on the ground before he forced himself to take a step back.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ It was not what he wanted to do, but what he needed to do as he turned away from her in attempt to regain some semblance of composure. How tempting she was. Standing there with the loosened dress. The feeling and taste of her skin. Her intoxicating scent. He closed his eyes, his back still facing her as he was trying to force the manifestation of his own desire, to settle. "If I compromised you any further . . . " Because he knew he had already compromised her. That he had kissed her, and touched her, and sucked her breasts which were all things that only her husband or at the very least, affianced would have the right to do. "We would have to wed." And he could not marry her because . . . of the risk of falling in love with her.
