"Though I suppose it is always a risk, considering the secrecy of her identity." She could be here, she might not be. Anthony was not consumed with her discovery. Eloise was far more interested in Lady Whistledown out of all the Bridgerton siblings. "And should her identity be revealed, it would seem she has a great deal to answer to . . . and several displeased ladies," Anthony said with a smile. He was not one for such gossips, but it was indeed interesting that Whistledown had gotten away with so much lately. That she had not yet been exposed. But surely, it would not last too long.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU Anthony remained silent following Hasting's greeting. How he hated the uncomfortable air between them yet he did not know fully how to rectify it. This man would be his brother in law; Anthony was trusting him with his sister although . . . perhaps trust was too bold a word. The entire arrangement was being done because of . . . Anthony wasn't even entirely certain. There was pressure to make things right after what Anthony had witnessed in the gardens. He had little control of this marital situation and for that, he was quite frustrated by it all.

Still. The conversation at the church gave him hope. Hastings telling him that he would have thought him dishonorable had Anthony not done what he had. He was unsure how long the silence had held between them, but eventually, Anthony did speak, knowing there was no need for feigned pleasantries. "In a matter of days, you will marry one of the people I love most in this world." His sister. One, because the others were the rest of his family. His heart held a piece of each Bridgerton. "And you never would have been my first choice." There was no harshness in his words nor should it come as a surprise. It was mere fact.

"But what is done, is done." Anthony knew he had to accept it. "So I must ask you Hastings, what can you say to assure my mind that this union is not a mistake?" Beyond marriage, obviously. The man was a rake. Anthony knew it all too well. A rake who had previously held no interest in marrying.

Would he remain faithful to Daphne? He knew Simon was a good man, a dear friend which Anthony would not have made had Simon been poor in character. But his love for his family trumped all other friendships and relationships in this world . . . and so he had to ask. His question, more indicating for Hastings to come clean about what made him willing to marry Daphne. What made him go after her the way he had. What would come after Daphne became his wife. He wanted an open, honest conversation and hope that they could do so as gentlemen.

He reminded Anthony of a different time in his life; one where he pulled pranks and did not have as much . . . responsibility. Anthony always knew he was destined for this, born into it. However, he had never expected to take on the role so soon, and so young.

Once Hastings sat down, so did Anthony, listening as he explained that he had meant to see him sooner. "It was a pleasant surprise," he assured him. "And I know what you would have done, had you the choice between calling on me or attending the ball," Anthony said jokingly, implying that Hastings would rather see him. He was of course simply teasing, though he knew how the now Duke felt about such extravagant affairs. Especially with mamas swarming him with their daughters. "How terrible was it?" Anthony asked, with a slight chuckle of amusement, eager to hear his friend's account of the night.

While he was quite proud of Daphne and the way she had captured the queen's attentions, he also knew what it would mean: a flock of men vying for her attentions. She was named Incomparable and with that, would undoubtedly bring a flock of suitors. But Anthony would not let it be so easy. He refused to let any of them take advantage of his sister for they would need to earn her company. Finding a husband for her would be no easy task, and Anthony made it his business to know anything he could about why they would not be good enough for her. Would anyone though, truly?

So yes. This ball would be quite different from the others. No longer would those be approaching him merely to exchange pleasantries. And nor would they be so close to Daphne if he had anything to do about it. Her voice broke him out of his thoughts, realizing that the carriage ride thus far had been silent. He could speak for himself as to why he was not talking, but noticing that Daphne hadn't either . . . made him wonder if she was alright, and prepared for what the evening would hold.

"Nothing of note," he said, though his voice was clearly teasing for her knew that Daphne asked . . . because she wanted to talk. He knew his sister well enough. He smiled, indication that he was just teasing and did not intend to remain silent if she desired otherwise. "What thoughts fill your mind Daff?" He asked, opening the conversation to address anything that may be troubling her, or whatever else brought her too to silence for that interval of time.

i will ALWAYS PROTECT YOU There were not many events that Anthony could decline. As Viscount, he often accepted invitations to various events and knew he had to make good on his word. He was after all, representing the family as eldest son and heir. That didn't necessarily always mean that he wanted to go to them.

But his duty was set before all else for it involved his family, and securing a future for his family. Ensuring they were taken care of and fulfilling the responsibility of finding them suitable husbands and wives. Fortunately, not all were there yet so it was fortunate that he had some time in between. Tonight however, was just as any other grand affair. His mother had of course not stopped trying to encourage him to speak to young, promising women in the hopes of finding a wife. Anthony would not hear of it. He remained silent on the topic, politely dismissing the urge to make conversation with the intention of courting and eventual promise of marriage.

It was rather far from his mind, especially considering where he intended to go after he saw his family safely home. It was late, but after such an evening he longed for nothing more than to find ease and comfort in the arms of a woman. One woman in particular. Discreetly making his way to her apartment which he had conveniently bought across town, he glanced around before knocking on the door, hoping that she wasn't asleep though knew it was a very real possibility at this late hour. |
