Tag: @missshaw never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade turned his attention back to Gilly, noticing the goat's little tongue peeking out as he slept. The woman explained that she had brought him food to ring him comfort, praising the animal and asking about him. "Thank you," Slade responded and though the words lacked softness, as was natural for him . . . there was a sincerity in them. He knew that these people had no obligation to aid him or Sir Gilly. He had come to a doctor's home for the sake of a goat . . . and they had not turned him away. There was no amount of money that would ever be enough to compensate for all they had done.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "He eats anything and everything," Slade said, rather fondly toward the creature. "He does like apples a great deal." Really, Sir Gilly would eat anything he could get his mouth on. "His name is Gilberto," Slade said evenly. He knew the name sounded . . . different, and it was not as if he could tell others that his four year old daughter had named him. Despite his protectiveness over the animal, Slade would make an offer, knowing that Gilly -- despite him resting -- would indeed like it. "You may pet him if you desire," Slade offered, moving his hand to the side to allow her the space to and avoid his own hand from touching hers.

Tag: @missshaw never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. There was not a great deal that could truly force Slade in an emotional state of upset where fear and worry was concerned. These emotions were reserved for those he was incredibly close to and often occurred in extreme circumstances. Today, was such a circumstance. His sister had insisted on joining him for a walk when having to take out Gilberto, and she insisted on traveling a bit further to another park. Clearly, she needed him for a chaperone to meet someone because her affections for Gilly were not that strong.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Slade did not care who she wished to meet and that was not the issue. The issue arose when was to watch the goat for a brief moment and grew distracted, causing Sir Gilly to break free from his leash. The goat panicked, not seeing Slade or a familiar face around and so did what any animal would naturally do: it ran. Slade could hear Gilly bleating as he bounded through the park, but Slade could only move so quickly with his cane. He did call out the goat's name once or twice, and by the time he had found him . . . it was too late.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He eyes caught the tragic impact. Gilly had run onto the road in sheer panic, and the carriage driver had not seen him in time. He just barley missed the horses' legs, but was not so lucky with the wheel, for it ran right over Gilly's front leg, the sound piercing the air. Slade's eyes widened in the horror as he felt his heart race. He always cursed the goat but inwardly, loved him. And seeing him get hurt in such a manner, was horrific. Slade rushed to the animal's side as Gilly's cries of pain filled the air. This was one of the moments where one could be assured that Rueben Slade did indeed have a heart for he felt it aching for his four legged companion.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Slade took off his coat, ever so gently wrapped Gilly in it and scooping him up with one arm. He looked around, his mind attempting to quickly work out his surroundings. As fate would have it, there was a doctor's home not far from here and while he was bringing him an animal, it would have to do under these dire circumstances. He walked by his sister, not even looking at her and bluntly stated the words "Go home." He would not deal with her right now. Instead, he made his way to the Bishop residence, and they had graciously agreed to take a look.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He did whatever he could to aid the animal, and Slade had not left Gilberto's side. While he remained stoic on the outside, his eyes followed every movement, and knew that it was getting increasingly harder to swallow back the fear of losing the animal. By the time he was done, the good doctor allowed Rueben to remain here so that they could keep an eye on Gilberto before making the journey home.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Rueben was sitting next to the resting animal, one hand holding the top of his cane, while his other hand gently stroked Gilly to soothe him; a rare moment where Slade was not wearing a glove in a public setting for he wanted Gilly to feel his touch. The nobleman only grew distracted when he heard a woman enter, slowly turning his gaze from the sleeping goat, to her. "He is still sleeping," Slade stated, assuming she had come to check on the animal.

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Evelina was thrilled when he shared the news that Elizabeth and Dawn would be coming for a visit. She was starting to make all these plans of what they could do and how they could spend their time. Slade smiled at seeing her so excited -- though it did not take a great deal to build Evelina's excitement -- but the fact that she had made her first friend at the park was thrilling to her. Slade extended an invitation to his sister, leaving her with no other choice but to come, though the promise of spending it with Evelina was enough to convince her. Especially as he had made it abundantly clear that he would not be leaving her in his sister's case alone any time soon. Once the day came, Evelina was excited to wear a new dress and large bow in her hair. She was helping one of the staff and her governess set things out outside since with the agreeable weather, she decided that they could be in the gardens.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ It did not take long for them to arrive, and when Slade received word that they had and were led to the drawing room. Slade decided to speak to them first, knowing that they had a surprise resident of the estate -- surprise to their guests anyway. Making his way there, he entered the room, standing by the door as he looked at both women, giving a nod of greeting to each one. "Evelina is in the garden, but before we join her I must ask, do either of you have an aversion to animals?" Because, Sir Gilly was out there and if there was too much screaming from the women then it would only create further chaos.

THAN KIND LIES Rueben wondered what prompted this desire to bring peace among the Slade family. Perhaps it was his dukedom, feeling now fully comfortable in it causing him to feel an obligation to any end feud or withstanding tension. Slade knew full well that their father had given up on him, the second son not as integral in the family's hierarchy as the heir -- which was not something Rueben held discontentment for. Or perhaps it was the Duke's consideration of family overall, revealing that he was now ready to marry prompting him to think about strengthening ties.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Rueben's own consideration of this was playing in his mind, his reason being for his daughter of course. His own need for a wife not having an impact on the decision. Whatever the cause of it, if it was enough to make William apologize to him . . . then it certainly was a significant goal that the man wished to achieve. Rueben said nothing as they made their way through the house, his brother actually agreeing to mind his tone. "You truly are set on this desire for peace," he commented in a low voice, slight sarcasm in his voice. Once they were outside, the moment William opened his arms to her, Evelina went running towards him excitedly.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Uncle!" She cried in delight, throwing her little arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. "Can't you stay longer? Can't you stay the night?! We can spend the WHOOOLLLEE day together! Wouldn't that be fun?! I can teached you how to draw! Because I drawed you, do you remember that Uncle?! Do you still have the picture? We never got to play hide and seeked!" Gilly followed after her, bleating for attention, at which point Rueben motioned for the four legged animal to come to him, and Slade scooped him up in his arm, the goat now letting out a bleat of joy before nesting his head against Rueben's shoulder.

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Juliet had very valid reasons for wanting a child for they were linked to Evelina as well. As her not being an only child. He knew that Evelina was not lacking love in any area of her life -- with the exception of a mother of course. She was surrounded by family, if not of blood then of heart. She had children to play with that were her age from those who worked for Slade and close friends who had their own families as well. But the love of a true sibling . . . that was something she did not have. As Rueben was not particularly close to his brother or sisters, he often wondered if it would be the same should he have another child. And Juliet spoke of her own experience being an only child as being a lonely one.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ It certainly was something to consider . . . though Slade knew that with that came more risk. And of course there was also the conception of it that . . . wasn't particularly an area of comfort for Slade. The mention of a son was not something Rueben had even longed for for the sake of inheritance. In fact, he was unsure if he would even want his son carrying on the businesses that Rueben did -- the less than legal ones of course. So she had indeed raised some interesting points that were not unreasonable or unjust. Especially since they had not previously discussed having more children or not as part of the stipulations of this marriage. Taking in her words, considering them, he knew he could not entirely dismiss her . . . request.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "I will consider this," he told her. And he was a man of his word. It was a subject he would contemplate. "Right now, let us focus on transitioning you into Evelina's life in this new role." For that in itself, would be quite the adjustment. He did not doubt Evelina's attachment of Juliet; he knew she already adored her. But, living with each other every day was an entirely different matter.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "You would only wish for one more child?" He asked, confirming or allowing her to elaborate on any further desires for children if it exceeded beyond a single one. Though in the process of doing so, knew it was only fair that that he answer her question. "Having an heir has not been a priority," he answered. "That does not mean I would abhor one," he clarified. "Only that, having a daughter did not cause me to long for a son." That despite the lack of heir, Slade had never felt burning desire to try for a boy.

Tag: @edwinasharma1 Note: Slight god mod of Edwina in the carriage! Let me know if you'd like me to edit it! never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. She had heard of him. The fact that she did not seem to be wary of him showed that whatever she knew, was most likely due to his family name and relations she may know he held through familiarity with his sisters or the Duke . . . and not other matters of business. He took in her name, only the slightest familiarity in the family name which meant, there was no connection to them and his more business affairs. Which made sense considering that she did not have a father presumably alive. He gave another short nod in acknowledgement, his drive indicating that the carriage was ready for them.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ He allowed him to help Edwina into the carriage, one of his guards handing him a flask. Rueben gave him a bit of a look while his guard just shrugged and smirked, before taking his position next to the driver at the front of the carriage. One Edwina was inside, Rueben used his cane to hoist his foot up and stepped inside, seating himself across from her. Once settled, the carriage started to move, knowing that they could not waste time in getting her home. Slade extended his hand to pass her the flask. "It is only water," he assured her, since apparently his guard and close friend could not find anything better to carry it in.

Tag: @lucygranville never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade's sister insisted on joining him for a walk with Gilly in the park. This was a task that he much preferred to do on his own for there were far less interruptions and need to prolong the activity. But now with his sister joining him, and more likely to socialize through the process, Slade knew this task would take far longer than anticipated. He knew she held such intentions, using him as a chaperone so that she could most likely speak to a gentleman . . . for there was no other logical reason for her to wish to be near Sir Gilly. Nevertheless, he was left without choice and she was walking alongside him, smiling at everyone they passed while Slade remained stoic, Gilly walking in front of them on a leash so that he may be contained.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ As they moved through the park, Slade noticed one of his associates and it did not take him long to approach, under the guise of a friend. But he would not talk business in front of his sister. "Go ahead brother. I will watch him," she assured Rueben, already taking the leash from his hand. Slade was incredibly hesitant but his sister urged him onward. Taking a few steps away to speak for a few moments, Slade remained focused on the conversation, keeping it brief and straightforward. The man owed him money and he assured him he would have the final sum in two days time. Once it was decided, Slade gave a short nod and turned back to where he left his sister.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Only she was not there. Slade looked around, seeing her converse with someone who appeared to be a friend: Lucy Granville. Though that was not what Slade was focused on. What he was focused on was the leash empty of Gilly. Leaning on his cane in quick strides, Slade approached the two women, ignoring his sister attempting to introduce him to Lucy nor offering greeting to the lady. "You were meant to be watching him," he said with irritation in his voice towards his sister. Realization struck his sister as he looked at the leash and eyes widened with feigned horror. Sir Gilly was on the loose.

Tag: @julieta never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. random number generator selected . . . 1. Changing clothes. It was fairly known that Rueben was a rather . . . private individual. He always kept personal from business and he did not often vocalize a great deal about either. Apart from those who were directly involved of course. This strive for privacy also extended to . . . intimacy. Physical touch was something he was uncomfortable with and this extended to any sort of physical intimacy. For that reason, and far deeper ones, being in any state of undress no matter how minimal was something he did without any witnesses. No household staff to assist him, and that was how it had been since he was a boy. His clothing was his armour and without it, he felt unprotected; vulnerable.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ So when the time now came for him to change, Slade did so meticulously. Starting with the removal of his gloves which he set on the table. He had the rest of his clothes laid out in preparation, incredibly organized in each of his daily tasks. Folding his shirt upon removal, Slade was reaching over for his fresh one when the door swung open and his eyes darted to the intruder. His staff knew better than to enter without knocking, but it was Juliet, his wife. Ordinarily, it should not be incredibly alarming for a wife to see her husband in a state of undress . . .but their dynamic was a tad bit, different. Unconventional some may call it. And so it left Slade feeling very exposed. Casting a glare, he quickly grabbed whatever attire was closest and taken in reflex, to cover his unclad body. "Do you not knock?" He questioned, his voice not raised but there was a strong sternness in it.

THAN KIND LIES Rueben continued to look at the older male as he spoke of such rectifications. "To what end?" Rueben inquired, wondering if this was a gesture of long term hopeful rekindling . . . or a short term apology until the next they were all together. Contrary to what some may assume, Rueben did not enjoy the tension and discourse among himself and especially his brother. But the strong personalities always seemed to clash . . . unless they were able to find a middle ground. A balance. Perhaps, this would be it.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ When William asked about Evelina, it was clear that his brother intended to stay for a little while longer. Which, Rueben held no objections to. "She is in the garden," he answered. Hearing William state that the goat could join as well so long as he kept distance nearly made Rueben pause. The air of authority exuded to naturally from the Duke . . . granting permission for Gilly to be present in Slade's residence. But, Rueben did not challenge it. There was no need to for Sir Gilly would be where he desired. "You will seldom find them apart," Rueben told him as he turned to leave, expecting William to follow or at least walk alongside him. Rueben stopped one of his staff, asking them to bring out refreshments for the Duke.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "So whether he is near or not, I caution you to mind your tone and volume." More in warning than in threat and the motivation behind Rueben's words -- shockingly -- were actually meant to aid William in developing a rapport with the creature. Enough to coax it into obedience. "He does not respond well to loud noises." Rueben stopped walking, turning his head to look at William. "Nor does Evelina." A reference to raising his voice though, with the apology, Rueben merely said it as reminder rather than from threat or anger.

THAN KIND LIES Rueben was often able to read a situation and the people within it well enough to anticipate what was coming next. It was an ability that had gotten him quite far in his line of work; about to make predictions based on evidence that may seem so subtle to another. But with his brother standing before him, Rueben had not been expecting him to apologize. Even though it was his back facing him and he lacked the eye contact to indicate sincerity. In all the years they had been brothers, Slade could not recall a time that he had heard him speak such words. And the second son expected it even less now that William was a Duke.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ But then he turned around and spoke of the sake of our family. While it did not diminish the apology, it did raise question. Rueben stood still, perfectly stoic as always with his features compose. Though he did give a nod to William in acknowledgement, accepting his apology though first, had to question part of it. "Imperfect," he repeated, taking in the world. "And do you wish to, rectify these imperfections?" Slade's words were not hostile, nor accusatory . . . but rather, held genuine curiosity in them. Because Slade wanted to know the long term plan here and whether it extended beyond a simple dinner fiasco.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ For even Rueben knew he held part in that for not complying but to set everything right between them . . . to attempt to set right these, imperfections, was indeed an ambitious goal and difficult task. Making his way a little further into the room, Slade continued. "Your apology is noted." Though if his brother was doing this . . . then perhaps Slade should offer a little more. Not for the sake of his brother or sisters, but for the sake of Evelina. "And accepted."

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade was well aware that she could change her mind regarding these arrangements, due to her discomfort. But it was the best he could offer. He would not have Evelina elsewhere, especially alone with a woman that he did not know. Despite the care she had given his daughter, there were not many that he fully trusted with her. Clearly. "Not at all," he said going along with the ruse. "Apart from waiting on them and using this time most efficiently." In this case, using that time to spend with Evelina. "Then it is settled. I will arrange for a carriage to be sent for you in three days time." In the event that she had anything else that needed to be done, and as far as Slade knew, there was no major event taking place on this day that she need prepare for. When she then spoke of not being here to court him, inviting him to stay for tea . . . Slade knew that was his cue to leave.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "Best relay that to Kenneth. Lest your father believes otherwise." Now that they had a perfectly good excuse as his visit was mere invitation on behalf of his sister. Her tease caused him to look at her, thinking back to their first conversation. The joke was not missed, but Slade was not one to freely smile with amusement or -- God forbid -- laugh. "I believe Miss Davenport, that you receive enough of that at social gatherings." Idle conversation that is. Slade only engaged when necessary and was fortunate that his physical condition disallowed him to dance so to be forced in a position where he could not swiftly exit.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Taking hold of his cane, he rose to his feet and reached for his hat, putting it on his head. "I will take my leave now," he told her, giving a nod to both her and Dawn. When he took a couple steps towards the door he paused for a moment, half turning back around. "There is something on the table for you," he told her, referring to the box of chocolates. He would not have even mentioned it but with Evelina's picture and note inside, he did not want to risk anyone else finding it. Though before she had the chance to look at its contents, Slade made his exit from the Davenport estate.

never make DECISIONS OUT OF FEAR. ONLY OUT OF SPITE. Slade gave a short nod when Elizabeth commented on being glad that Evelina was able to approach her. It did not terribly surprise Slade for he knew his daughter was quite sociable. It was however, a relief that she had approached someone who was not as . . . problematic. And seemed to be rather agreeable to the circumstances. She then asked about what she was to say in regards to where she was going . . . that she was not the best liar. Yes. In the ton appearances were truly everything. "You will not have to," he began to tell her, regarding to her having to lie. "I will invite my sister over for the afternoon as well." Because he knew she wanted to see Evelina, and Slade was not about to lead Evelina alone in her care anytime soon.
❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ "You can therefore inform others that you are merely accepting an invitation from her for afternoon tea." Slade wanted to send his entrusted driver to pick her up, far more comfortable with his own people taking care of such arrangements. "She does however, have a penchant for keeping others waiting," he continued. "So she may be a bit tardy." His words holding a deeper meaner, for while they were true . . . they were also meant to imply that he would purposely invite her at a slightly later time so that Elizabeth and Evelina would have a bit of time alone. And that therefore, Elizabeth need not concern herself with having to lie with a completely false story,
