Clara walked with him to the room, and when he gestured toward it, she paused with her hand on the handle. For a moment she turned and looked at him, before entering the room. And that was one of last few moments of calm that the household saw for the next day. For getting ready for a ball apparently took more work that Clara was aware of. Especially when you had a fair godmother in the form of a little girl named Lina.
By the time it was getting closer to time to leave, Clara felt as if she had been bathed, brushed, powered, dressed, and pinned more than she had ever been before. Looking in the mirror once last time, her lace gloved hands smoothed over the already wrinkles dress. Her heart was breathing quickly, and she felt like a little girl playing dress up--rather than the practical woman she prided herself to be. Turning slowly she watched the silk swirl around her. It was beautiful. She'd loved all the dresses, but this one--this one made her heart skip and flutter at how wonderful it was.
Leaving the room, she walked down the hall and paused at the top of the steps. With each careful step down, she felt slightly more nervous for his reaction. Would he think it beautiful too? Would he enjoy having her on his arm tonight? Would she actually be on his arm tonight??
When she was half way down the steps, she saw him. Smiling at the sight, she slowly finished her decent and stepped closer to him.

He told her it was well deserved, and Clara looked down for a moment, smiling at the praise; enjoying hearing it. It was just as she looked up that she noticed he smiled slightly too at the following idea. "That was not a challenge, Mr. Slade!" She softly, and pretendedly, chastised him for pretending to try harder to spoil his daughter. Though the laugh in her tone made it clear she understood hew as not serious.
Then the conversation shifted to something a little different. "You want to be." She corrected, when he said he must be. If it was as simple as must, then the world would have better fathers all around. While many were amazing fathers, there were also many whom were not. "If it was as simple as must be, then we would see more fathers doing so." Maybe that was what made the three of them work so well. They all wanted to be here, rather than had to be here. It was a nice thought.

Finally remembering that she held a book, Clara sat it on the side table, and glanced at the still sleeping goat, before moving to join him. She was always mindful that he did not enjoy touching, but it did help that she longed to take his arm and walk with him. Let his escort her there. Yet knowing that there was a risk of making him uncomfortable, and wanting his company, she simply feel into step beside him.
It had taken her some time to come to realize he did not enjoy touching, and she had never asked why. It was so much apart of him now, that she did not think about the reasoning too often. In the early days, she had wondered, but after a few years she just knew it was apart of him.
She was honestly, and smiling brightly when she replied, "I would very much like that. She will be sleeping a while yet." Her naps normally lasted a hour, and it had not been quite that yet. Clara let him know he had time, yet her mind was not on his daughter. It was so curious about what he thought would suit her. What his idea of her was.

Yes, yes the goat did indeed like everything. As she had warned, there had been a time or two that Sir Gilly had found something very expensive to eat. None of that seemed to be held against him though, as Sir Gilly was still a loved member of the household. "Then I hope he enjoys the biscuits and not the blanket." She joked with Lina, noticing her pretending to drink the tea. "Though I dare say he has not tried to eat our picnic blankets in quite some time. You must be doing a very good job of training him."
Or more likely the goat was getting enough food else where, though it mattered little. Clara was still proud of how Lina took care of her friend. Lina asked what her favorite food was, and Clara paused to realize--she did not know. Clara did not over enjoy sweet things, so the normal foods that were popular favorites were not overly in her diet. "Do you know, Lina, I do not believe i have ever thought about it." She admitted. "Though I think tea might be close."

If Clara had assumed that this was not fully planned on his part (to which she had not) than she would see now that he had been planning this. Even while knowing that he left nothing unplanned, hearing that he had planned his enough to have selected gowns for her made the feeling as if something was fluttering inside her. Perhaps the phrase of butterflies fit the most.
"You selected gowns for me? . . . Personally?" the knowledge that he had selected gowns that he thought she liked was more than a flutter, and it felt in her chest. A sort of child like joy, that felt so good after so long of waiting for him to come home one night with news that he had found a wife. It almost felt a little like hope. Which she knew better than to allow herself.
This must be why Lina had to much joy in her. If this is what it felt like to have his attention, and focus on her. Her finger slipped from the book, unknowingly loosing her page without care as she could only focus on him. "I am fighting the urge to run like Lina to go and look." She said with a small laugh, looking at his face and trying to figure out the meaning behind this wonderful gesture.

A hey cake indeed! How practical of them to have a hay cake. Clara smiled as Evelina thought of cakes for everyone to be fair. She was was never limited to a budget with Lina, but she attempted to not over spend, making sure that the girl learned to balance the idea of money with her wants--however cakes could easily be added. "I do not recall turning one. I do remember turning 20." She said the number with a bit of a tone that hinting turning 20 was a big event, and for a child as young as Lina--it was. "Do you remember turning one?"
"You made a very lovely sounding tune," Clara admitted while they waited by the door for a short moment before it opened. Smiling in greeting to the servant, who was hired thanks to Clara sending part of her wadges, and thanks to less people here to care for. Once the door was shut, Clara removed her gloves, and hat pin, so she could hand over her things for safe keeping until time to leave.
After being shown to the sitting room, to wait the others, Clara took a seat on the couch, and smoothed her dress out. "Would you like any tea or biscuits before playing in the garden?" She asked, knowing her mother and the children would be down with in moments of finding out they were here.

He turned to look at her, and for a moment she could see into his eyes, as he made a joke--one that made her shoulders lift as a soft laugh escaped her lips. These moments were nice. Spending time talking with him, while Lina played. Mr. Slade looked away, but Clara's eyes lingered for a moment before she lifted her tea cup up to her lips.
He spoke of his daughter's happiness, and Clara looked over at the said little girl. "Tis hard to be anything but charmed and happy in her presence." She admitted in return. Curious, Clara broached a subject that she did not often, or perhaps even had never really asked about out right. "Does she take after her mother?"
Looking back at him, she watched to make sure this was not a unwanted topic. Clara had been hired just before Lady Slade had died, and had not really gotten her to know her as the timings were so close. Sometimes it felt as if she had never known the woman, and she had to remind herself that she had met her.

Yes, she had believed, foolishly, that this day would not come. That this could be her family. "You have never spoken of wishing for a wife. I am only surprised to find you have been thinking of one." Despite this words of wishing for one his daughter, a mother was almost a wife. A wife who shared his life, and more.
She glanced toward the door, wishing to escape from the thoughts, but knowing that she could not walk away from the emotions as easy as she could walk out of the room. "I wish you all the luck in your hunt, Mr. Slade." She told him softly, knowing it was all she could do. And that these personal conversations would need to grow less and less. For her her sake, and his w-wifes.
Pushing to stand up, she step closer to where he sat and--even knowing that he did not like to be touched--rested her finders on his shelve so he would know she was still there for him. "You deserve to be happy. Just as Lina does." Moving her hand back she looked down at him, and cleared her voice with a slight sound. "I should be off to bed. No doubt Lina will be a bundle of chaos after hearing the news on the morrow."

Clara blinked, but smiles politely when he instead asked another question. While he was not yelling, she assumed he was going to want to speak to her father. Whom was not at home. Which was just as well, the care of the children fell to her as her parents were concerned with their appearance in society. Clara knew they meant well, they did love their children. Sometimes she just felt they did not understand what children needed.
Before she could reply to his question, he relieved what Harry had done. Turning to look at her brother for a moment, the boy's head fell and the shoulder dropped. He knew he had disappointed her. "Thieving? Harry!" She did not yell, but her tone rose in pitch. Turning back to the stranger. "What did he steal?" She asked knowing she had yet to answer the first question, but there was the more important question here. "I am Miss Honeyfeild, and this is my brother Harry," Children did not yet go by Mister.

What troubled her? It was a reminder that she was letting her personal feelings invade. Her mother, who had raised her to be proper in everything she did would be horrified. Yet she realized with his words of concern for her what her feelings were. Why they hurt, and felt sharp in her belly, and chest. Why it felt as if she had been falling without sight of anything to catch her. Why the idea of a mother for the child she loved, and a wife for him hurt so very much. Why she felt like crying, despite the ability to hold her inside.
And she realized the fruitlessness of such emotions.
Her tongue wet her very dry lips, and she lifted her chin slightly. Not enough to appear arrogant but to look at him evenly, as she had done before his deceleration of a wife. "Forgive me for for appearing troubled, I was simply caught unaware. You must admit this was a surprise." She excused, knowing it was not the truth, and knowing she was now telling an half lie. She had not been 'simply' caught unaware. There was, after all, nothing simple about only realizing you were falling in love, the moment your heart was broken.

He did not wish for his daughter to grow up without a mother. Yes. Yes of course that made sense in words, but not in her. Perhaps with time she would come to be able to seperate her feelings from this, but for now . . . for now she felt inadicate.
Not from her abilities, but in their lives. For she had built herself a life here with them, and a mother and a . . a wife. Where not what she was. Not for them.
He next words made her push a forced smile to her lips, though the faded before she could begin speaking. Yes, of course that is what she should be concerned about. Her position. "Of-of course. I would stay for Lina." Though a wife might disagree with that. She would have the power to make this wonderful world of her's fade. "I had no thoughts of leaving until she's of age." Girls after all did not need governess forever. They needed mothers.

In need of a mother. For his daughter. If his first words of a wife had not felt as if there was something digging into her body, these words drove it home. She could feel the tingle at the tip of her nose, and she slowly pulled in a deep breath to prevent the display of emotion that she knew was just below the surface.
She felt caught unaware, and in a way . . . in a way a little betrayed. Not that she could place any blame on him, for he had not given her any reason to feel this way, and yet . . . and yet she felt as if he had been the one to pull the rug that was not causing her this uncomfortable falling feeling. Sinking.
She had almost made them a family in her mind. Placed herself as Lina's mother. Now she was felt foolish, hurt, and sad. A sad she had not felt the deeps of before. "Might I---" Deep breath, "Might I ask what has brought on such a want?"

Clara saw the smile, and it made her feel pride in that she was able to make him do so. Looking down for a moment she smoothed her dress out, before looking back at him. Something more to do while an emotion other than pride lingered. One she wasn't sure she could name, but one she did not mind.
There was something else? Her face tilted just slightly while she watched him with a warm smile causing her lips to tilt up just slightly. A sign she was enjoying this time with him. Then he spoke of seeing a wife for his daughter's benefit. Wife. Clara blinked a few times as the words slowly settled on her. A wife. Her smile slipped off her face, and for a moment she felt . . . .
She was not sure what this feeling was, but she knew it was not pleasant. It was sharp, and settled in her belly, and chest. "You are in want of a wife?" She asked, still feeling as if someone had pulled a rug from her her feet and she was struggling to stand.

Clara knew that the conversation could have ended when he told her the date they would begin, however, she had quite come to enjoy her conversations with him, and felt no need to hasten the meeting along. She knew a good governess would, and yet she'd never felt like an employee since the first few weeks here. While it was fanciful to think, Clara assumed they were friends of sorts. It was something she felt comfortable in.
"I should fear for the ones left to care for him. Either we would find only Sir Gilly in residence at our return--or return to a supper of mutton." The last part came out with a brighter smile, as it was a joke and they both knew that no one would DARE harm Lina's pet. Not just for fear of their employer, but for fear of hurting Lina."I will write to one of the local farmers, and seek information about travel with goats. See if any suggestions can be found?" Doubtful, yet perhaps something could be found to help.
