i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Vaughn lingered on London far longer than desired. While he had just enough men to sail a ship, several of his previous crewmates had abandoned their positions out of fear of being caught. The Bow Street Runners were doing nothing to help this. He already had some men nervous about sailing, and Vaughn did not want any cowards in his crew. That being said, there was not much of a choice either. He had very few that have been with him since the beginning, far more loyal than the new members. So right now, he needed to do something to ease their minds. He needed to teach these law abiding bastards that they were untouchable. That they could get to them as they so pleased.
Vaughn had done his fair deal of watching . . . and came to discover that there was a woman among the Bow Street Runners. She seemed to hold some position there, and while Vaughn hated dealing with people aboard his ship -- non crew mates -- this would be a good opportunity to gain some leverage. And profit in the process. After all if he had to choose, women were easier to apprehend than men. Skulking in the shadows, he kept a watchful eye on the woman. His hat tipped downwards to conceal part of his face, and his black attire aiding in remaining inconspicuous.
He followed her for a little bit, until finally making his presence known to her. "Pardon me," he greeted, abruptly stepping into her path. "Are you the Misses who works with the Bow Street Runners?" He asked curiously, already knowing the answer. She was quite a pretty little thing . . . perhaps this would be more fun than he thought. "Don't be scared. I just need you to come with me for a minute," he told her with a smile.

TAG: @francescab i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS The more irritated and angry she grew with him, the more encouraged and amused he was. A terrible combination yet one that spurred on his provoking remarks, finding entertainment in the entire exchange. "And yet, you cannot help it, can you?" He asked her mockingly when she said she should not have bothered trying to be nice to him. Vaughn knew he was not deserving of it of course, but that was not what had an ongoing smirk upon his features. "You feel compelled to be kind to all, deserving or not, for that is the appearance one must carry." He truly did not know how these people did not break under the need to portray such . . . perfection. Constantly.
"Does it ever become exhausting?" A somewhat rhetorical question, for if she had answer he was clearly hear to listen. Not out of any show of support but rather, just to find any truth to his words. She stepped closer to him, and his smirk was more evident. He could see the tightness to her, the clenching of her fists, the scowl upon her fair features that intensified. She asked him if he said this to all the women. "Only to those who look strained from having to smile at all times." More teasing. "Why not let yourself go, just this once." Yes. He was continuing to provoke her to see if there would be any amusing outcome. Evidently, he was not the best influence . . . on anyone. "After all, you look quite angry right now," he further mocked. "Keeping that inside at all times truly must be maddening." Vaughn himself had a quick temper but he never suppressed it. The rage was revealed to whomever prompted it . . . or whomever was near to experience it.

i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS The woman had some semblance of sense after all, for the only words that left her lips, was that of identification and reveal of who her father was. Still, Vaughn remained in his current stance, with his finger still upon the trigger, letting those moments of uncertainty linger. She did not know him, just as he did not know her. That brought an element of unpredictability but in this particular instance, it was he who posed as the greater danger with a potentially threatening outcome. Letting those moments of uncertainty drag on, eyes from his crew mates upon him as if they knew the outcome could go either way . . . Vaughn eventually relaxed his finger from the trigger. Still gripping the gun but easing his arm from it being directly pointed at her. Instead, he just casually waved it as he spoke.
"Better," he said, speaking to her as if she was a dog he was in the process of training. He began to take a few steps towards her, inching closer without any thought of personal space. He did not fail to notice that she had not complied with his demand of submission. He moved to stand behind her, standing so close to her in attempt to cause discomfort as he leaned his head towards her ear. "I will get you on your knees, one way or another," clear suggestiveness and crudeness in his voice as what that would entail. A threat within them, for such a woman among such a group of men. Casually stepping to the side and forward, he began to instruct his men. "Send word to the good Marquess that we have his precious daughter--" He paused, turning his head to look at her with an expectant expression for her to give her name to them.

TAG: @mariannetalbot i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Once the woman got to her feet, she proceeded to glare at them and make demands. Both of which, elicited laughter from Vaughn while his crewmates joined in the humour. Vaughn's expression of amusement remained, as he extended his arms out on either side of him as if to reference their current location. Lads, do you hear that . . . her husband and family will be searching for her. We must release her with haste!" His words so fully of mocking and ridicule which drew another eruption of laughter to rumble amongst the ship.
"What gives you the idea that you are in any fucking position to make demands?" Vulgarity of language not withheld for anyone of higher rank. His thoughts on nobles were ones that already called for him to show respect towards them . . . clearly. His mischievous smirk returned as he set his gaze upon her once more. "Should either of them make any attempt, they will find themselves buried in a watery grave." For he held no reservations about killing them. "Unless you give me reason as to why they may be worth more alive." An offer for her to start negotiating. Otherwise, he would find far more . . . pleasurable uses for her on his ship.

TAG: @julieta i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS She questioned why who she married mattered . . . whether he planned on taking her back. The former question he would certainly answer; the latter, well, why provide her with any semblance of reassurance that she was going to survive this voyage. "Oh but it matters to you my dear," he began to tell her, dropping her hand now that he had pocketed the ring.
"Your value is dependent on the wealth of your husband. That is all you are worth." Well, of course there were other pleasures that could be had from a beautiful captive such as herself, but Vaughn was thinking of what was most profitable in this situation. "Should you have been unwed, I would have questioned who your father was." Standing still in front of her, Vaughn turned his head to address his crewmates. "Who knew that I would be giving lesson to a noblewoman," he said in mockery towards her, prompting his crew to laugh in amusement.
He turned his head forward once more to look at the young woman. Though his eye contact was on her, his words were still meant for his crew. "Such a simple minded girl. Hardly a surprise." For they cared more of the fashions of their frocks, and the state of their hair. Leaning forward, his words now meant for her, there was an underlying tone of threat to them. "I do not like to ask things twice," he warned her. "It displeases me. And you would not want that now would you," he teased, his hand cupping her chin.

i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Vaughn smirked at the man's question. The natural authority in his voice oh so typical of these noble bastards. But this, the ship . . . it was Vaughn's kingdom, and here, the man before him was a mere peasant at his mercy. How the thrill of it was invigorating. "Your wife . . . " He began to say, purposely leaving the words unfinished, the familiarity of the woman evident in the tone in which he spoke them. Let the man's fear linger. Clearly, there was some level of care for her if he went through all this trouble for a wife. So many men dead, a ship destroyed and now . . . his life compromised.
Vaughn inched closer to the man, standing directly in front of him as he leaned closer, violating any concept of personal space. "She too, far too delicate for this place." A sinister smirk playing on his rugged features, clear suggestiveness in his tone of voice of what his words could entail. The possibilities of a delicate woman being aboard so many lawless men.
Assumptions -- not always inaccurate ones -- of how starved for the company of women being away at sea left them. Yes; he would let the mans emotions run wild, offering no productive answer but rather, leaving suggestion and fears to race through a husband's mind. "Quite irresponsible for a husband, to leave her at the mercy of company with men such as us." With a wink, Vaughn began to step back from him, taking a good look at one deemed so devoted to his precious wife.

i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Vaughn was completely in his element. This was precisely what he had been missing. The thrill of it coursing through him, the adrenaline pumping through his veins. The moment he had seen the approaching ship, he was prepared. It could be a response to the duchess they were holding captive or, they could just have happened upon the same waters. But judging with the speed and direction, they were heading straight for them. And it looked intentional indeed. But they were not foreign to this. In fact . . . it was quite literally what they did for a living. Only this time, they were the pursued, not the pursuers.
Amidst the air of chaos, commands being yelled, men getting in position . . . it was not long until the battle commenced. Shots fired and the cries of it all. . . quite literally for their lives. The navy undoubtedly made a valiant effort, but Vaughn knew men like that. He had worked with and for men like that. With one glaring difference: he and his crew -- unlike the others -- were not restricted by honor. They used whatever means necessary to meet their end goal. They did not have code of conduct when it came to warfare, or diligent structure they need follow. It was all kill, or be killed. And nothing, felt more glorious. Especially when victory was there. They had boarded the ship, killing any men that lay in their path and once the threat was secured, raided whatever items of value they found aboard it. Once done, Vaughn watched the enemy ship sink, pieces of wood floating in the open waters. Once standing a strong seemingly formidable ship, was no more.
Despite any money they had from the monarch to fund such escapades . . . they were not victorious. And it was quite exhilarating. They only lost a few men in the process themselves. A reasonable price to pay. "Captain!" Vaughn heard his title being called and he turned around to see a couple of men brought to deck. Unlike their privateering days, Vaughn held no interest in having prisoners of war aboard their ship. It was too costly and too much effort. Besides, a message had to be sent. It was bad enough they had that noble wench in the cell below deck. He looked at one of the men who had a bullet in his arm. Vaughn could put the man -- and himself -- out of misery, or . . .
"Toss him," he casually commanded, two of his crewmen hauling the man towards the edge of the ship before tossing him overboard to the sharks, or drowning. Whichever came first. This brought Vaughn's attention to the other man. Now . . . this man, was not uniformed like the others. Vaughn looked at him up and down, smirk playing upon his features. "Now who is this sorry bastard," he questioned, though somewhat rhetorically. Two of his men each had an arm of the man, holding him in place, as Vaughn took another step closer to him. "You look far too delicate for this place," he said with clear mocking in his voice.

TAG: @francescab i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Vaughn scoffed, a chuckle of amusement escaping him when she shifted her glare to one more fitting of a polite hostess. But . . . polite was not always the most fun. And for him, he was far from a gentleman. "Easy there," he teased. "You may stretch your lips too much should you continue to force that smile upon your face." Despite his . . . lack of etiquette, he also knew he had to have some limitations here.
He did not wish to get dragged off by the Bow Street Runners and make a big scene among those that he could learn far more from. Taking another puff of his cigarette, he exhaled with the smoke surrounding him before fading, taking in her next words. "I suppose she is," he played along. "But is it taking a break if you continue to play the perfect little hostess with me?" He said mockingly, referring back to that perfectly formed smile she transitioned to with us each. "You look far better when you scowl," he added on with amusement.

TAG: @francescab i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS For those who knew Vaughn, his dislike for upperclassman was no secret. He hardly concealed his hatred for them, and had no qualms with making this known. So of all places, in all of the damn country . . . an event hosted by a family of nobility, where other families of nobility would be frequenting in large numbers . . . was indeed the last place anyone would expect James Vaughn to be. But, he was not here without purpose. His time at sea often left him away for lengthy periods of time, and with the seasons that would pass, came with it more and more noble asses that were coming out into society. And thus, more potential for profit.
So Vaughn had come with his family; his mother, her husband and whatever siblings that he apparently had and should get to know -- which he had no interest in. With her re-remarriage came the changed family name, so he would honor being the last Vaughn and did not wish to waste breath on members that were not part of it. But, they did provide a good way to get in on this event that was the talk of the ton it would seem. So as Vaughn entered, he was keeping sight of everything. He had already managed to swipe a few pieces of gold and valuable trinkets here and there, merely for the thrill rather than the need for it. Wealth and money was no issue for him . . . his accumulation of it still standing strong. But, there was no thrill with earning a living the honest way.
Every night there was some overly extravagant event and tonight was no exception. He found himself outside the main estate, leaning against the wall in the back, hiding in the shadows. He clothing was decently put together, maintaining his colour of choice: black, with a hat to match that was titled downward . . . allowing him to fully camouflage in the darkness of the night. He was smoking a cigarettes when he noticed a young woman come out. She was a pretty little thing and from what he had gathered in his time here thus far, part of the hosting family. Watching her for a few moments, he finally spoke, making his presence known. "Isn't it rude for the hostess to leave her own event?" He said with a smirk, clear mockery in his tone for he did not for a second belief that ridiculous logic. All the rules of etiquette would drive a person mad . . . and he did not need them for his own descent into madness.

i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS Vaughn's finger was on the trigger, ready to squeeze it and be free of this . . . liability, when he paused after revealing that her father was a marquess. Now, contrary to what some may say, James was not a fool. It was quite easy for someone to lie about such a thing, and the elevation in rank that their family held. She was very clearly nobility though and if they would get coin for these troubles, then perhaps it would be worth it after all.
"I"s that so?" He questioned, his tone holding that same mocking tone to it, though he did start to ease his finger from the trigger. "And who is your father that would be so willing to pay for the return of his daughter?" He continued to question, a mischievous smile forming on his lips. "Rather than just be rid of her and all the trouble she causes with that sharp tongue of hers. Not to mention the saving of what I am certain is a hefty dowry." He had been around enough nobles to know that not everyone cherished their daughters. That it was the sons who held value to them. But she seemed to have a father willing to pay. Precious for her; profitable for him.

TAG: @julieta i have sworn TO DO VERY FOOLISH THINGS They had been at sea for well over a day now and Vaughn had spent most of his time on the upper deck having missed the smell of the open sea and the freedom that came with it. They had no destination set in mind but . . . that was always part of the adventure. He just hoped that were a good one awaiting them. "Captain, we have something for ya!" Vaughn turned around to see a young woman, hands bound with rope with a crewman on either side of he. A smirk formed on Vaughn's features as he titled his head to the side, his eyes slowly moving over her. it seems they had been storing a surprise for him on the lower day and thus far . . . he was not entirely displeased.
"And what do we have here," he said in an amused tone. He moved closer to the young woman; she was a pretty thing indeed. As he moved closer, his eyes leered over her reaching for her left hand, his fingers curled around her wrist, as he raised it in front of them. Seeing the wedding ring, one that looked like it was good quality indeed, he pulled it off her finger and held it up to the sky, squinting as if to inspect just how high the quality was. Pocketing the piece of jewelry, he looked back at her. "Who is your husband?" He questioned. Her hands looked as if they did not see a hard days work and judging from the expensive ring . . . she was at the very least, nobility. Perhaps she would be worth more than they had originally anticipated after all.

[break][break] "I suggest that you leave very quickly and very quietly or you can stay for the extreme violence that is coming your way." | [attr="class","textblox05"] [attr="class","galhead"]SUMMARY [attr="class","galtext"]Vaughn is from a family of long generational privateers. He followed in his father's footsteps, taking over when he was 15 years old and his father was killed during a ship takeover. Vaughn however did not remain solely as a privateer, his ruthless tendencies taking him one step further to engage in piracy. With the need for privateers diminishing, Vaughn finds himself back in England, a chunk of his crew having defected due to the extreme punishments if pirates are caught. Vaughn seeks to build upon his crew so that he may get back on the sea. [break] [attr="class","galhea"]PERSONALITY [attr="class","galtext"]Vaughn is ruthless, sinister, and extremely prone to violence. He has a bad temper which is quickly triggered, and often escalates in unexpected ways for no one knows what could set him off. He has a vulgar and crude tongue, unafraid and unapologetically speaking his mind despite how severe or with whom he converses with. He has a strong dislike for upperclassmen and makes it no secret to make this known. [break] [attr="class","galhea"]RELATIONSHIPS [attr="class","galtext"]Vaughn's main relationships are that of his crew. He does not form emotional attachments easily as he lives a very transient life. That being said, I'm sure he's made some connections along the way whether thats as a crewman, captive, companion, etc! [break] [attr="class","galhea"]PLOTS [attr="class","galtext"]I am open to any and every plot with Vaughn. Whether its any of the above dynamics, or if you have any other ideas for ways our muses can interact, I'm game; canon or AU. Feel free to reply here, PM me, or DM me on discord.
